KFF Problem Statement
Kudler Fine Foods (KFF) was established in 1998 when Kathy Kudler fulfilled her vision of establishing her own gourmet food store. Her passion for gourmet food enabled her to research the neighborhood as well as the product assortment mix that should be offered. Since 1998, Kathy has expanded KFF from one store to three stores and has plans to continue with expansion efforts throughout California as well as outside of California. The long-term vision of KFF is to become the premier gourmet grocery store for shoppers interested in purchasing the finest imported and domestic bakery, meats, produce, cheeses, and wines (University of Phoenix, 2008). Kathy has several opportunities that needs to be addressed within her organization before this goal may be realized. She must hire more personnel; empower the people currently in position to do their jobs, and she must remain relevant to the customers.
As identified within the Strength Weakness Opportunity and Threat (SWOT) Analysis performed on the company, there are several opportunities that Kathy is currently facings, one of which is operations management within the stores (University of Phoenix, 2003, p. 8). Initially, Kathy took responsibility for majority of the operations management decisions within the La Jolla store. As she has expanded to the Del Mar and Encinitas store locations, not much has changed. Although she has a larger staff and more stores, Kathy has not delegated effectively the tasks that need to be done within each of the stores. Kathy is working seven days a week and visiting each of the stores daily. She is solely responsible for manually ordering supplies for each of the stores weekly. In the event that Kathy were to become ill or take extended time away from KFF, KFF would become inoperable because no other employee knows how to manage the business within the current set-up....

Kff Problem Statement

...KUDLER FINE FOODS PROBLEM STATEMENT Kudler Fine Foods Problem Statement Paul Caruso University of Phoenix Kudler Fine Foods Problem Statement Kudler Fine Foods is a premiere gourmet grocery store established in 1998 by Kathy Kudler in La Jolla, California. Kathy’s vision was inspired by her passion for gourmet food and the inability to complete her gourmet shopping at one location. Kudler Fine Foods gourmet shopping experience intends to offer the highest quality in products with highly paid specialists on hand to assist the customers and provide the largest selection (i.e. 16 different varieties of apples are stocked) all at one location. Other revenue sources for Kudler are a very basic web site and a catering business that has yet to be properly promoted. Currently, the upscale gourmet grocery store has three locations all handpicked by Kathy and she has plans for further expansion. Although Kathy has no experience in operating a gourmet grocery food shop, she hires and fires, places weekly orders, review vendor payments, and is expected to meet and greet customers. The problem Kudler Fine Foods has is that its management has no time for strategic planning and the company does not have a dedicated visionary leader; instead, the leader is consumed with operational planning and middle management type responsibilities (i.e. short term planning). Kudler Fine Foods must consider taking on outside management to assist in running the operation and......

Defining the Problem: the Critical Step to Realizing Opportunities

...Problem:The Critical Step to Realizing Opportunities “The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them.” —Albert Einstein Defining the Right Problem the Right Way Defining the right problem the right way is both the most difficult and the most critical step in problem solving. One can go through a comprehensive problem-solving process, including generating a complete set of goals to use for evaluation, generating a broad set of alternatives, identifying and assessing risks, and carefully evaluating alternatives against the goals, and yet not effectively solve the problem or realize potential opportunities. If the right problem or opportunity has not been identified, the best solutions cannot be identified. And if the problem has not been stated in a way that enables one to identify a solution, it may not get solved at all. Guideline for Developing a Problem or Opportunity Statement Developing a problem statement that will enable a leader to create value requires patience, energy, and focus. And it will take time. There are five simple guidelines that can help you define the right problem the right way. These guidelines are described below, and the use of these guidelines is illustrated in a simple scenario that follows. 1. Scan the Environment Thoroughly with the Intent to Move Forward and Create Value: Before you write the problem statement for any business or personal scenario or situation, scan......

Hanna Perkins Approach

...Introduction I remember the first day that I left my son with a sitter in order to go to work. My wife was a trauma nurse who worked three twelve hour shifts starting at 7:00pm and ending at 7:00am. In order for her to get rest, we needed to find a sitter. The funny thing is I remember distinctly not feeling comfortable with leaving my son in this persons care, even though the references she provided were solid. To make a long story short, my intuition proved correct and the situation did not work. I fired the caregiver, perhaps hastily, and now had to figure out what to do about childcare. The hospital my wife worked at had a childcare facility and luckily, they had one opening that would allow us to enroll our son. The facility was clean and bright, very well staffed, and very open and inviting. The trade-off was that the “tuition” was a bit much for a young couple, but we agreed the safety and development of our son was much more important than the cost. Reflecting back on this with knowledge I now have, it is an absolute certainty that the daycare had a formalized system in place; however, I cannot identify which method. This “system” is the distinguishing factor between the two examples provided above. In one case, the caregiver assumes the role of guardian. The responsibility, if taken seriously, is to protect the child from harm and provide for the child’s basic needs. Robert Furman recognized in 1966 that caregivers are in a unique position to do......

Problem Statement: Kudler Fine Foods

...Problem Statement: Kudler Fine Foods University of Phoenix Situation Analysis and Problem Statement Developing a workable business plan is the first step in successful business ownership. With this road-map, business owners have a guideline to follow from the initial start-up to the finish. The financial statements within the business plan help owners and managers to understand how earnings are spent. Focusing on these two areas can alleviate past, present, and future issues or problems that many businesses experience. Although Kudler Fine Foods (KFF) has many addressable issues, the business plan and financial statement stand out the most. A weak business plan equals a weak business. For the owner, Kathy Kudler, to reach her goals, she will need to invest in the development of a solid plan that addresses all aspects of her company. Situation Background (Step 1) In the five years of operation, KFF has had two business plans. The first in 1998, Kudler herself developed. A college student developed the second business plan five years later (KUDLER INTRANET, 2008). After reviewing the updated business plan, I discovered several weak areas and underdeveloped. In addition to these areas, the 2003 Income Statement shows several areas of concern relating to high or excessive expenditures. Issue Identification KFF operates on over a million dollar budget with a business plan developed by a college student. Four areas on the 2003 Income Statement stand out as......

The KFF management is planning on opening a new location when the other current locations are not successful. After they opened their first store in La Jolla, California, KFF has expanded their business to Del Mar and Encinitas, California. KFF's future growth plans include expansion to other areas in Southern California, specifically in Carlsbad California due to its large populatin base and relative proximity to the Del Mar location. Currently, the Del Mar store is not performing well compared to its financial targets and also because of the small population in the area. KFF has planned these moves without doing a proper analysis of the need for their services in the area.
