A little Coppermine that's situated in Chile, experienced a cave in that caused a total of thirty-three miners to be trapped underground August 5, 2010. The miners were trapped without sufficient oxygen, water, or food; no one knew for sure if the miners would stay alive. These miners were stuck underground for four tiring days; there was nothing that even suggested that any of the miners were still alive. There is no precedence of this event in which miners survive being caught below the ground for a long time (Yang, 2010). As luck would have it, all of the tears shed by the miners loved ones; were replaced by pure astonishment when all thirty-three of the miners were found and saved without any of their lives being lost.

On one, no matter what the situation is ever thinks that something like the event above could take place, until it does. The company is responsible for contacting the families of everyone trapped underground; the company must also inform their other employees. This type of situation is not something that people are prepared for. This form of communication must be handled very carefully by means of the addressees to remember. There will be some thoughtfulness to keep in mind specifying the diverse positions and persons in the addressees.

This paper will discuss some of the possible requirements of the relatives of the mining workers on getting a communication regarding this specific event. This paper will likely discuss the actuations an individual has to make before and after the communication is conveyed in order to know that the message was accepted as wished for.

Potential needs of the families Family members require more details about accidents that befall their relatives while at work (Tennyson & Ray, 2005). They will need to know the exact time the incident took place, persons trapped in the mine, rescue measures being taken to save the victims and what is being done to help them as they wait to be saved. They will also need to be updated from time to time on the developments of the rescue process, how they can get access to the miners upon rescue and above all they will need to be assured that all necessary procedures are being taken to ensure the miners are rescued safe and sound.

Potential needs of the employees since the employees are accustomed to the operations of the mine the communication will have to be concise and done formally. They will need a quick update of the incident and what the company is doing to rescue them and they will also need to be assured that the other mines are not at risk of collapsing when they resume mining (Bajak, 2010).

Actions to be taken before and after communicating the message Before making the communication release it is best to consider the best channel for communicating the message to both audiences (Tennyson & Ray, 2005). For the families , it is best done through the media more specifically television for the sake of the family members who are likely to be estranged and may become uncontrollable if they were to come face to face with the persons in charge in the mine. For the employees it is best done on a face to face basis because they would be in a better position to understand the circumstances under which their colleagues were trapped.

After the message has been conveyed, the right course of action is to ask the audience to seek clarity where they have doubt or where they need more information.

DRAFT COMMUNICATIONS

To the families (through the media) A crisis has befallen one of our mines, the San Jose mine of the San Esteban Mining Company which is situated in northern Chile. The mine has suffered a huge rock failure and at the moment it is estimated that over thirty workers are trapped inside the mine at around 300 metres (Weik, 2010).

Rescue operations headed by the government which began soon after the cave in are still in progress. Boreholes have been drilled to locate the exact position of the workers but for now it has not been established where they are exactly (Fiscor, 2010).

The rescue operations are estimated to take some time and the families are encouraged to be patient has they will be updated from time to time about new developments. In the meantime plans are under way to ensure that as soon as the miners are located, food supplies, water and medicine will be sent to them as they wait to be rescued. I encourage the family members to take heart as we are taking the necessary precautions to ensure that the miners come out safe and sound. We believe that the miners will be located within the soonest time possible and upon rescue, family members will be allowed to see their relatives as they receive treatment in the state hospital.

I believe that you have all heard about the current crisis that the company is facing. The workers in San Jose mine have been trapped at around 300 metres below the mine and vigorous rescue operations are underway to ensure that our workers come out in good form. I want to assure you that the rescue team will do everything possible to ensure that they are found in time. Further we have arranged means by which they will receive food supplies once located and upon rescue they will receive effective treatment. I want to assure you that all the mines will be thoroughly checked to ensure that they are safe before you to resume work.

You will be updated on the developments of the rescue operations but as for now I recommend that you stay calm as your head of departments will keep you informed.

Different audiences need to be communicated to in the best way possible, what might be appropriate to one audience might not necessarily be appropriate for another. The families need more detail on the occurrence of the incident and on the safety of their relatives. The employees on the other hand will also be concerned with the safety of their colleagues but they will also want assurance about their own safety while working in the mines in the future.References
