On august 5, of 2010 there was a cave-in in a small copper miner in Chile were thirty-three miners have trapped underground. These miners are trapped three hundred meters underground they have an inadequate amount of water, food, and oxygen. There still was no sign that any worker was still alive on the 4th day since the cave-in since there was no one that had made it out of the mine alive. Luckily all the miners were located and rescued with no lives lost.
In a situation like this no one looks forward to it happen, but they have procedures in place in case this incident does happen. The family members of everyone that is trapped underground is notified by the company. Also all other workers are informed of the incident that has happened. There are no preparations that can be taken to make someone ready for this type of incident. When communicating this type of incident it has to be treated extremely carefully by the means of the addressees to be remembered. There are also some thoughtfulness to remember with the diverse positions and with the addressees. This will inform about the employer’s workers receiving communication on the incident. This will also will discuss any actuations an individual may have to make previous and subsequent to any communication being conveyed so that the message will be accepted. As stated before, when corresponding with family and other workers of victimize the person has to be thoughtful. If thoughtfulness isn’t used in the communication then the addressees could be misled or misconstrued by the message. This could lead to confusion or even upset the person more. When communicating with the family members a sense of sympathy should be directed towards their way. When communicating with the family all aspects of the incident needs to be informed to them, so that nothing is heard from another source and so that the family doesn’t think the company is hiding information from them about their loved one. By doing this it will answer the family’s questions of how it happened and also this can inform the family of all steps being taken to save the workers lives. These family members may not know how mining works and they may ask question about the hazards of the rescue or of any faults that could have caused the cave-in. Any incident like this is rough and the employers like to keep family members up-to-date on everything that is happening, but there are times were the messenger only knows as much as the family does about the incident. When informing other workers of the incident will be different communication. This because an individual that works in the mining field will already understand the hazards of a cave-in. With this at hand not all details have to review as to the hazards at hand, but to discuss other safety practice to help prevent other incidents. In the message it should include all attempts and ways that the miners are going to be rescued with. The employers have to remember that these employees that are trapped are buddies of other workers and in most jobs like this they view each other as family or brothers. So the message should inform the other workers that if they are not in the “right state of mind” that they must take time off so that safety is upheld and so that no other injuries or incidents happen. Before communication of any type is conveyed to addressees, it has to be proof-read and checked for grammar and spelling errors. Also it is the dispatcher responsibility to discover if there is any barriers such as language before conveying the message. If the message is by phone, there should be a draft developed to follow by so that the message is to the point and understandable. At the end of the message the addressee should be asked if there are any questions that they may have. This will allow for any misunderstanding of the message to be explained. Also with having a follow up message will allow for the relatives and other workers to be updated on the incident and the status of the rescue.
Conclusion:
With every message that is being conveyed the addressee has to be the major concern. The message needs to be formed around the contingent of the circumstances, diverge, and the wants of the addressees. When the wants of the addressees are not meet then the message is transmitted unfinished, or could be inappropriate towards the addressees. With what happened in the Chilean mine disaster, considerable concern for the miners have to be taken, along with the added concern towards the families and other mine workers.
