Professional Knowledge and Abilities
Developing professional knowledge and abilities is important to both personal and professional success. By developing personal skills and increasing professional knowledge, I am more likely to accomplish a variety of tasks and goals. These skills and knowledge are a defining factor for professional career success. Success is the result of working towards a well-defined goal. This requires drive and commitment. Knowledge is the key to opening the door to a particular job or career path. Most employers now require a minimum education level for many entry-level positions. College education has become the standard for many jobs, even for many positions that did not require degrees in the past. Me being in the military have found that people, who have a degree, or some sort of professional certification, have an advantage over those who do not have one. Another reason education is important, is that for people to be competitive, they must continue to achieve higher levels of education and skills, but in addition to professional skill on the job training/job experience is also an important part. With the rapid growth of industry it’s becoming very important to keep pace for each individual. Most professions will require continuous instruction and retraining. Rapid changes in the job market and work-related technologies will necessitate on job education for almost every worker. One organization that I’ve found to be a good organization is the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) it is a very important organization that has built their profession based on the highest standards of honesty and integrity. This organization has a vital impact on the quality of life for all people involved in their field. The services provided by this association requires honesty, impartiality, fairness and equity. They are also dedicated to the protection of the public health, safety and welfare. This organization contributes professional knowledge and abilities by laying down the fundamental ethics or canons of their profession which states 1. Hold paramount the safety, health, and welfare of the public. 2. Perform services only in areas of their competence. 3. Issue public statements only in an objective and truthful manner. 4. Act for each employer or client as faithful agents or trustees. 5. Avoid deceptive acts. 6. Conduct themselves honorably, responsibly, ethically, and lawfully so as to enhance the honor, reputation, and usefulness of the profession. (Ethics Center for Engineering and Science, Casewestern University)
Based upon this code I would be able to benefit from this knowledge as a baseline for success, because if you can’t think beyond yourself then you can’t be yourself. In the professional it is not about just you. It is about what direction you need to go and grow and if you apply some of these canons you will be able to achieve success.
