A Dark Chapter of Canadian History

“Canada is renowned the world over for its welcoming embrace of immigrants. But like all countries, our record isn’t perfect. We haven’t always lived up to our own ideas.”- Prime Minister, Stephen Harper.

In August 2008, Stephen Harper apologized in Surrey, British Columbia, for the mistreatment of the Indian members of the Komagata Maru received. Although some were content with this, others wanted a formal apology in the House of Commons that they did not receive until another eight years.

The Komagata Maru was a ship that carried 375 Indians, nearly all of the passengers were from elite landowning village families rather than the low-status groups. This ship had been chartered by Gurdit Singh …show more content…
After 1 month the case was taken to the British Columbia Court of Appeal, but the case ended in the favour of the government since the court found no law in Canadian or British governments that gave the passengers a right of entry. Only 20 returning residents and a few special cases were accepted. Indians had the right to travel anywhere under the rule of the British Empire including Canada, but the Canadian government was interested in only white European …show more content…
During the period of World War I, this had a negative impact on Canada from the perspective of the Indians, since they were denied the right to have a proper life; free from the torture they suffered from being mistreated through physical and sexual abuse. They were denied entry into Canada even though the Indians had a right to enter due to the rule the British Empire had over India. Despite this, the event would have a positive impact on the political issues in Canada, since many Caucasians were against the immigration of Indians into Canada. Currently, in 2018, this issue has had a positive impact on Canada, since it shows that this country does admit its mistake. It shows how accepting this country is, along with this two apologies were made directly to the descendants of the passenger on the Komagata
