People often think issues are problems. Issues are actually the proposal to solve problems. The first step in problem-solving is the definition of the problem or the root of what it is that causes the issue at hand. Problems should be a negative expression; whereas issues should be positive expressions. “Decision making occurs as a reaction to a problem” (Robbins & Judge, 2007). That means there is a negative situation, which needs a plan to turn the situation into a positive status. An issue is a concern or problem in which people disagree (Clouse, 2008). Once an individual has established the issue and noted that the claim is debatable; then the goal is to define a problem statement to find opportunities for a solution. When there is more than one person involved in the process of determining the issue or definition of the problem; everyone has to understand and be clear of the issue.
Kudler Fine Foods, a premiere gourmet grocery store, in Southern California provides fine quality food to the local area. This independent owned company is experiencing some current issues that need to be addressed. For example, perishable goods have a short shelf life. These items need frequent replacement to keep the inventory fresh. How can the the company keep maintain profit; when these goods are constantly being removed from the shelves on a regular basis? Tracking systems for sales are needed to order a more accurate count of inventory. This will help to alleviate goods that are discarded too frequently.
Another issue deals with specialty shops normally have a high pay-roll. A wine steward or butcher, for example, has a higher paying position than a cashier. Because the pay-roll is high; the pay is a bit lower than average. How can the company maintain employees? Perishable goods are available for employees to take home for their families.
