The network’s fundamental characteristics and components. Kudler Fine Foods is a upscale specialty food store located in the San Diego, California. “Kudler Fine Foods was founded in 1998 by Kathy Kudler who was a former Vice President of Marketing for a large defense contractor. Kathy developed a business plan, obtained financing and six months later, on June 18, 1998, the first Kudler Fine Foods opened.” (Kudler Fine Foods website) Currently, Kudler Fine Foods has three locations. The home office in La Jolla, CA., and two other locations: Del Mar, CA. and Encinitas, CA. All three locations will require an upgraded network. T3 Dedicated Line is all three stores together. The current network can be described as a Bus topology. A bus network topology is an architecture in which a set of clients are connected via a shared communications line called bus. “A bus topology consists of a main run of cable with a terminator at each end. All nodes such as workstations, printers, servers are connected to the linear cable.” (omnisecu.com) In Kudler Food situation, each of 3 cites utilize the same configuration of service, workstations, standalone UPS and a dedicated OC1 SONET which are connected to an 100 Base T Eethernet backbone. Bus topology has some advantages and disadvantages. The main advantage of the bus topology is that a computers or peripherals are easy to connect to a linear bus. Bus topologies are relatively easy to install and don't require much cabling compared to the alternatives. One of the main disadvantages is when there is a break in the main cable the entire network will shut down. Furthermore, if the entire network is down, it is difficult to identify the problem. Bus networks work best with a limited number of devices.

...Integrative Network Design Project James Warren NTC/362 July 30, 2012 Andrew Carpenter Integrative Network Design Project This paper will discuss Kudler Fine Foods desire to upgrade their current outdated infrastructure with current technology that will let them stay competitive in today’s market. In order to do this they will need to tie all three of their existing sites together using wireless and VOIP technology. Distributed Computing Currently all three of the Kudlers facilities utilizes a distributed computing system using the same configuration of single server and multiple pc’s, each with a single UPS and 56k modem for connectivity. The computers are connected to an Ethernet backbone (typically a hub that is not very efficient in handling network traffic for many computers) and the 56k modem is the only external connectivity that the sites have. Centralized Computing In order to bring this system up to standards they will need to update to a more centralized computing system which all computing is done on a centrally managed computer system and the users use a dumb terminal (thin client) to connect to these central computers. The cost associated with this has been reduced over the years and was only used previously in enterprise environments but now more businesses are moving over to this type of system. Network Topologies Kudlers three offices use almost identical setups for their servers, POS systems and their site connectivity. They......

Network Design for Kudler Fine Foods Part 3

...Network Design for Kudler Fine Foods Part 3 Network security is an ever more important part of network design, with everything moving toward being fully electronic and companies expanding their networks farther and farther away from their central hub (by the use of satellites) the chances and opportunities are going ever more present in today’s work place. Kudler fine Foods is making a huge leap forward with redesigning their entire network and by linking all three stores together through a central hub. This is a double edged sword in that this will make the stores more compactable with each other and this will expand there ability to retrieve accurate data from the servers on the fly but this also opens up Kudler Fine Foods to cyber attacks that they have not had to think about before. Hardware is a key component to securing a network. Kudler Fine Foods new network will have multiple hardware choices to make. Each location has Point of Sale (POS) computers that need to be secured from attack; there are office computers that will need to be secure. The POS server will need to be secured as well. There is the wireless Ethernet switch that will connect to the modem and Wide Area Network (WAN) between the three stores. The central hub location for the WAN (the Del Mar store) will also need to make sure the data servers are secured as well as everything else already mentioned. The desktop computers are going to be up to personal preference for Kudler Fine Foods, most desktops......
