Kumbh Mela is a sacred festival that only happens once every twelve years, which is celebrated by millions of Hindu pilgrims living in India. It has been noted to be one of the largest and most peaceful gatherings in human history where Indians who practice Hinduism migrate to the Ganges River to wash off their sins to be purified. The two videos that were to be watched were very different from each other, but showed the difference between the insider and outsider perspective very well. In the promotional video made by the Indian government for the Kumbh Mela festival, we hear lively music and see a lot of celebration only surrounding the Ganges River. From an insider’s perspective, we can see that the Kumbh Mela festival would attract Indians to bathe in the Ganges River to be purified of their sins so that they can live life as a new person. The Indians in the promotional video were smiling and you could tell that this was a sacred ritual for them. On the other hand, the documentary with Diego Bunel, shows the whole Kumbh Mela festival from an outsider’s perspective, because it was explaining what the Hindus believe in and why they were practicing their traditions. There were a couple of times were Diego and his film crew were told not to film and he was told that outsider’s were not allowed to witness the shearing of the hair on the heads during the naga sadhu preparation. We can see that Diego proceeded to try and peer over the fences to see what was happening even when he was getting pushed from the fence that was blocking the ceremony. Diego wanted to know what was happening and why they were doing it. Diego wanted to know more about Hinduism traditions and asked questions that got the viewer interested about the religion.

Housing – a Basic Right to Refugees

...An “Urban” can be personified as the movement of a pendulum where it ticks between high income, technology, sophistication, plentiful, fashion on one side and poor, slums, exclusion, refugees, homeless, left-out on the other side. A potential balance between the two would never be achieved as one might outweigh the other. Working with it rather than invalidating either can buy a balance. One of the most pressing issues in today’s world is the slums and refugee camps. People are forcibly evicted from one place and are stationed at another part of the world other than their birthplace (Refugees) or in the same country (Internally displaced) have multi faceted problems. One such challenge would be discussed in this article. A count on refugees in developing world has surpassed millions in the past decade. People displaced basically lack hygiene living, sanitation, water and electricity facilities and more importantly a legitimate roof above them. “The ad hoc nature of the Government’s approach has led to varying treatment of different refugee groups. Some groups are granted a full range of benefits including legal residence and the ability to be legally employed, whilst others are criminalized and denied access to basic social resources.” The most important challenge is the prevention of criminalization of such refugees and thereby the denial of social resources to them. The argument on this article would reflect that: giving the refugees, a legitimate roof and status would reduce...

...“RURAL MARKETING” Executive Summary A debate continued for a long time amongst the Indian marketers, both practitioners & academicians, on the justification for the existence of the distinct discipline of rural marketing. Consequently, two schools of thought emerged. The first school belived that the products/services, marketing tools & strategies that are successful in urban areas, could be transplanted with little or no more modifications in rural areas. However, the second school saw a clear distinction between urban & rural India, & suggested a different approach, skills, tools & strategies to be successful in rural markets. What differentiates the two markets is not mere income, but a host of other infrastructural & socio-cultural factors. Thus, the rural market cannot be tapped successfully with an urban marketing mindset & would definitely require its thorough understanding. In other words, the approach toward rural markets needs to be distinct from the one adopted for the urban markets. Thus, in a large rural economy like India’s, rural marketing has emerged as an important & distinct internal sub-division within the marketing discipline. This sub-division clearly highlights the differences between rural marketing & mainstream marketing. Secularism in India

...SECULARISM IN INDIA : CONCEPT & PRACTICE Dr. Shriram Yerankar Associate Professor & Head, Deptt. of Political Science, Jijamata College, Buldana (M.S.) shriramyerankar@gmail.com Historical Background : The concept of secularism as we take it to mean today had originated in the 13th century Europe. But we can trace the philosophical concept of secularism in the writings of Kautilya, a thinker of ancient India, who lived in the 3rd century B.C. The history of Indian secularism the protest movements in the 5th century B.C. The three main protest movements were by the Charvaks, Buddhism and Jainism. All three of them rejected the authority of the Vedas and any importance of belief in a deity. It can thus be seen that the ancient thought had a profound impact on the development of the theory of secularism over the centuries. Writers differ about the origin of the concept of secularism as to whether it had its roots in the eastern or the western thought. D. E Smith says, “The Secular State is, in origin, a western not an Asian Conception. This is not to deny the obvious fact the certain elements of the ‘secular state – have a long tradition in Asia.’ The term “Secularism” was first used by the British writer George Holyoake in 1851. Rural Marketing

...Rural Marketing Quite clearly, large Indian companies have begun looking at rural markets seriously. Some of them are even developing exclusive marketing strategies to tap this huge mass of consumers. Of India's one billion plus population, nearly 70 per cent live in non-urban or rural areas. According to a National Council for Applied Economic Research (NCAER) study, there are as many "middle income and above" households in rural areas as there are in urban areas. There are almost twice as many "lower middle income" households in rural areas as in urban. According to NCAER's projections, the number of middle and high-income households in rural India is expected to grow from 80 million to 111 million by 2007. In Urban India, the same is expected to grow from 46 million to 59 million. Hence the absolute size of middle and high income households in Rural India is expected to be nearly double that of Urban India. Percentage Distribution of household population and income | |Households |Population |Income | |Rural |73.6 |74.6 |55.6 | |Urban |27.4 |25.4 |44.4 | |All India |100 |100 |100 | Thus we see that Rural India contributes almost 56% to the National Income as against 44% contributed by Urban India. Although it is contributed by 76% of the total...

...FROM THE AUTHOR OF THE BESTSELLING BIOGRAPHIES OF BENJAMIN FRANKLIN AND ALBERT EINSTEIN, THIS IS THE EXCLUSIVE BIOGRAPHY OF STEVE JOBS. Based on more than forty interviews with Jobs conducted over two years—as well as interviews with more than a hundred family members, friends, adversaries, competitors, and colleagues—Walter Isaacson has written a riveting story of the roller-coaster life and searingly intense personality of a creative entrepreneur whose passion for perfection and ferocious drive revolutionized six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, and digital publishing. At a time when America is seeking ways to sustain its innovative edge, Jobs stands as the ultimate icon of inventiveness and applied imagination. He knew that the best way to create value in the twenty-first century was to connect creativity with technology. He built a company where leaps of the imagination were combined with remarkable feats of engineering. Although Jobs cooperated with this book, he asked for no control over what was written nor even the right to read it before it was published. He put nothing offlimits. He encouraged the people he knew to speak honestly. And Jobs speaks candidly, sometimes brutally so, about the people he worked with and competed against. His friends, foes, and colleagues provide an unvarnished view of the passions, perfectionism, obsessions, artistry, devilry, and compulsion for control that shaped his approach to business and...
