Review of Literature
This section presents the evidence identified through a search and review of literature related to the effectiveness of the LATCH assessment in achieving a successful breastfeed. Six articles published between 1997 and 2016 were reviewed (Bibb & Riordan, 2001; Ingram & Johnson, 2015; Jensen & Kelsay, 2015; Lau & Wouwe, 2016; Lewallen, 2006; Koehn & Riordan, 1997). Findings included five cross-sectional studies and an exploratory study. Sample sizes ranged from 11 to 907 breastfeeding mothers. A total of 1,813-mother baby dyads were involved in these studies. The mothers involved were healthy mothers or full term carriers evaluated at various points postpartum, including prior to discharge, at 6 weeks, quarterly, semi-annually …show more content…
Similarly to the four studies discussed above, the cross-sectional study performed by Jensen and Kelsay used Cronbach’s alpha to measure internal reliability and correlation in the consistency of the LATCH assessment on these breastfeeding mothers. Divergently, Bibb and Riodan’s study assessed the mother baby dyad using solely the LATCH assessment and Spearman’s correlation (2001). Both studies assessed the breastfeed immediately postpartum and at 6 weeks (Bibb & Riordan, 2001; Jensen & Kelsay, 2015). They found women breastfeeding at 6 weeks postpartum had higher LATCH scores and success in breastfeeding than those who weaned due to only one measure, breast and nipple comfort (Bibb & Riordan, 2001; Jensen & Kelsay, 2015). They also concluded that women who weaned before 6 weeks reported lower breast and nipple comfort than those who were still breastfeeding at 6 weeks (Bibb & Riordan, 2001; Jensen & Kelsay, …show more content…
Two of the six studies found that duration is key in predicting an effective breastfeed. The longer each breastfeeding session is as well as the longer the mother breastfeeds her baby, the more effective and high LATCH score the mother baby dyad will obtain (Bibb & Riordan, 2001; Jensen & Kelsay, 2015). One study found that the results are not fully reliable due to an error in the sample of participants. Also, none of the studies took into consideration the nurse, or educator, as a factor influencing the outcome of the LATCH assessment as well as the effectiveness of the breastfeed (Koehn & Riordan, 1997). According to the six studies, it can be concluded that based on the methods, the LATCH assessment does effectively assess and influence a mother’s success in breastfeeding.
