A Mountain Charles Park was a geologist, mineral engineer, who believed if copper was found under the white house, the white house should be moved. Brower was a tall man with a handsome ruddy face and a quiet voice. He was in his late 50’s with his share of white hair. An Island This part introduces the creator of Hilton Head Island, Charles Fraser, who feed and kept the native alligators around his office. Fraser is described as a short man, heavyset, with dark curly hair. Recreation is his business and business is his recreation. He attended Yale Law School and took a course called Myres McDougal’s Land Use Planning and Allocation by Private Agreement. His family owned much of Hilton Head Island and throughout his years in New Haven, Fraser became obsessed with creating an resort community in which he was in full control of. Fraser would drive up and down the coastline from Miami to Virginia Beach looking for beachfront owners asking, “If you had it to do it over again, what would you do differently.” He learned that most owners made a big safety hazard of lining up houses along the beach and putting roads behind them. He wanted his development to look historic and tried to locate old cotton fields, wartime fortifications, and vanished Taras.
Fraser is characterized as a tree lover. He one time spent 50 grand to save one live oak tree. He has 1000 acres that he calls the Main Wildlife Sanctuary and Woodland Recreation Area and he has legally committed himself to leave 25 percent of the plantation in its natural state. In Sea Pines Plantation he has built a town and the houses in the plantation blend in with the wilderness. He wrote a reverse bill of rights which is called an ironclad and it consist of Ten Commandments. Fraser is in complete control. Chairman of the Continental Mortgage Forum acknowledged Fraser “as one of the finest developers in the US”. Fraser is also Commissioner of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism for South Carolina. You would think he was doing this for the money but he’s not. Fraser views himself as a protector of the wildlife and this is what drives him. He believes most so called conservationists as “preservationts” but he prefers to call them “druids.” He says “Modern druids worship trees and sacrifice human belongings to those trees. They want to save things they like, all for themselves.” “The Druids dismiss me as a quote developer unquote, and the makes me mad.” There must be a druid at Hammand, Inc. because on a published map every island can be located but Cumberland. In Georgia, Cumberland is the largest sea island and has a population of eleven. If you ask the people where the alligators are located they wouldn’t tell you because they are fond of their reptiles. There are stands of virgin pine and virgin live oak on Cumberland, but the island as a whole is a reclaimed wilderness. After the civil war the sea islands in Georgia was abandoned but soon rich Yankees started to compete for acquiring one and Cumberland was bought by a Carnegie, Andrews brother Thomas. The Carnegie heirs are in the third, fourth, and fifth generations, and their numbers is so large they had to go to court to have the island divided. Conservationists realized not all of the Carnegies could afford to keep the land so they found a way to keep the island from being developed. In 1968, three Carnegies sold three thousand acres to Charles Fraser. After this a lot of people started talking bad about Fraser. “Charles himself is interested in power. That’s what motivates him. Everybody thinks he will go into politics.” Fraser flew Brower to Cumberland Island. He met a man name Chandler who had spent his whole life at the Island. He owned 22 hundred acres of the Island. This was part of the Island the Carnegie did not buy. His grandfather owned Coca Cola and bought the property in 1928. Fraser would take Brower to Cumberland Oaks where he intended to build on. Frasers vision of his next resort so real that he started to speed through the trees and round around imaginary corners. Fraser would drive to different places and tell them where everything would be located.
