The story of La Llorana, or the crying woman, is a very popular folk tale in the Spanish-American community. It has been passed down from generation to generation as a precautionary tale. Growing up in a predominately Mexican community, La Llorana is the most popular folk tale ever. It has been portrayed in paintings, movies, books, etc. This story has been used to scare children from going out late at night and to prevent them from doing anything they are not supposed to be doing. My first-hand experiences are few to none on this story, but I have been told stories by my parents and grandparents. As a child, I was told the story of La Llorana from a very early age. Some of my friends and I began to go around town just looking for something fun and exciting to do. One of the activities we liked to do was to go ghost hunting. We knew we probably were not going to find any actual ghost, but it was worth a shot. One of the first places we went to was the local rivers to see if we could hear or see the infamous crying woman. We only went a couple of times and never saw or heard anything. This left me questioning the story, but I was still a little scared. I never really went back to find La Llorana.
My experiences with the story of La Llorana have left me with something to pass on down to my future children and grandchildren. Even though I have never seen her and the story could just be an urban legend. It is still an interesting story of sorrow, fear, and guilt. This story will live on as a precautionary tale to future generations as a way to keep them on the straight path. The story of La Llorana is as part of the Mexican community than anything else. As I get older, I will continue to tell the story in hopes that it lives forever and scares the pants off daring children around the
