Unit 11 Lab Final: Voltage Regulator with Constant Current Limiting (PORTFOLIO)

Scope and Intention of the Project:
The Lab Final Project is a self-directed project with specific requirements provided.
You will be given a design task which utilizes a standard circuit in the textbook. You will apply knowledge that has been acquired in lecture, assignments, and previous labs.

Your task is to design, simulate, build and test a voltage regulator with constant current limiting as shown in Fig. 11-7 on page 559, Chapter 12 in the textbook. In addition to providing a circuit which operates to the specified functionality, you will submit a project report with required format and contents.

This circuit is to be built according to the following specifications: * Input Voltage Range: + 9 V DC to +15 V DC * Q1 and Q2: 2N3904 Transistor * D1: 1N4733 Zener Diode * R1 = 1.0 kΩ, R2 = 10 kΩ, R3 = 10 kΩ, R4 = 1.0 Ω * Nominal Output Voltage: + 10 V DC * Max. Output Current: 500 mA

Required Test Data: 1. Line regulation for input voltage changes from +9 V to +15 V 2. Load regulation for load changes from open circuit to 1000 Ohm load resistance 3. Graph of output voltages for at least 5 different input voltages, using a 150 Ohm load resistor 4. (Y-axis scaled for output voltage, x-axis scaled for resistive load) 5. Graph of output voltages for at least 5 different loads (include “no load”) at 12 V input voltage 6. (Y-axis scaled for output voltage, x-axis scaled for input voltage) 7. Determination of the exact resistance value for the load current limit.

The proposed steps for this project are as follows: 1. Description of each component function in the circuit. 2. Establishment of selection criteria for any integrated circuits and transistors. 3. Component identification and data sheet collection. 4. Calculations of the values of any resistor, capacitor, or diode. 5. Development of a test strategy determining how to test and evaluate circuit performance. 6. Setup of tests and test documents. 7. Evaluation of circuit performance by conducting tests to determine the required data. 8. Review of circuit for performance improvements and repeated testing. 9. Completion of final report that contains information as required in the report outline.

Experiment 1 was effects of groundwater contamination. Oil, vinegar, and laundry detergent were added to clean water with no means of filtration. The clean water was found to be contaminated. A filtration system consisting of cheesecloth and 60 ml of soil was created and the contaminated samples were filtered through it. The soil and cheese cloth did not affectively filter the contaminants. Experiment 2 focused on water treatment and a filtration system using cheesecloth, sand, activated charcoal, alum, and gravel was created. The contaminated water sample was created by mixing soil and water together. After the contaminated water was put through the filtration system and a few drops of bleach were added you could see that much of the sediment was filtered out, but an overwhelming bleach smell remained. The third experiment was to determine drinking water quality. Samples of Dasani and Fiji bottled water were compared to my local tap water. Test strips were used to determine each samples ammonia, chloride, alkalinity, chlorine, hardness, phosphate, and iron levels.
