First we separated the major pigments found in leaves of green plants then we transmitted different wavelengths of light through each major pigment. Activity one dealt with solubility of several pigments. The information given to conduct this experiment was that a chlorophyll a pigment will turn a blue/green color, a chlorophyll b will be a yellow green, carotene will be a deep yellow and xanthophyll will be a pail yellow. We were also given the fact that the most soluble pigment would be at the top of the chromatography paper. While separating the pigments, my group hypothesized that if we tested the pigments for solubility, then carotene would be the most soluble. The independent variable would be the comparison of the different pigments, and the dependent variable would be the solubility. In this experiment we used chromatography paper, spinach leaves extract, a lead pencil, a metric ruler, a paintbrush, one large beaker, 5-7 mL of solvent consisting of 10% acetone in petroleum ether and a paper clip. It was also important that we had access to a fume hood. The first thing we did was gather the materials. Yeasts require oxygen for aerobic cellular respiration but some are also anaerobic with alternative aerobic methods for producing energy. They do not require light to grow and their temperature range varies which means they can survive in a multitude of different environments. Very common, they can be found anywhere, from occurring on the skins of fruits to residing in the intestinal tracts of animals as parasites. The most common method of reproduction for yeasts is asexual reproduction through budding. In this process, the parent cell’s nucleus splits and forms a daughter nucleus. The daughter cell grows on the parent cell until it is large enough to separate. Through cytokinesis, this ‘bud’ then forms a new cell. Less common is the method of sexual reproduction in which spores are formed. In this lab, I will be culturing four yeast samples under different conditions. The goal is to study the effects of limited reproduction, additional resources (nutrition) and predation on the yeast population. ...improve my writing skills in a few ways. I have never kept a Journal before because I kept everything I was thinking inside my head. Keeping a journal has allowed me to put all my thoughts and ideas on paper. When I was able to see my ideas on paper it allowed me to become more creative. I played around with my ideas to come up with outlines for my assignments. I was able to use my journal as reference to go back to track my everyday movements and whereabouts and also write what I was thinking on those days. Keeping a journal can also help me with my writing skills because I am able to just write freely without judgment. I can transfer what I from my journal to help me come up with a topic for a paper. October 8, 2015 In regards to mechanics, usage and organization with my writing I have improved. Even though I still need improvement the writing skills labs did help me become aware of my weaknesses and strengths in writing.
