Scott Peterson was arrested in La Jolla, CA on April 18, 2003 by the California Department of Justice/Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement Task Force. He was arrested in the parking lot of Torrey Pines Golf Course, where he said he was meeting up with his father to play golf. He was in possession of several items not meant for golf. Peterson bleached his goatee and hair, but claimed it was from chlorine from his friends pool; later is his fried testified that Peterson had never swam or made use of his hot tub. Before Peterson's arraignment, he had been represented by Kirk McAllister, a veteran criminal defense attorney from Modesto, CA. He told Judge Nancy Ashley at the arraignment that he could not afford a private attorney. So, Chief Deputy Public Defender Kent Faulkner was assigned to the case, and then later, Peterson changed his mind stating, “He could afford a private attorney.” That attorney’s name was, Mark Geragos, who was experienced in high profile defense cases. Some of the gene products are required by the cell under all growth conditions and are called housekeeping genes. These include the genes that encode such proteins as DNA polymerase, RNA polymerase, and DNA gyrase. Many other gene products are required under specific growth conditions. These include enzymes that synthesize amino acids, break down specific sugars, or respond to a specific environmental condition such as DNA damage. Housekeeping genes must be expressed at some level all of the time. Frequently, as the cell grows faster, more of the housekeeping gene products are needed. Even under very slow growth, some of each housekeeping gene product is made. The gene products required for specific growth conditions are not needed all of the time. These genes are frequently expressed at extremely low levels, or not expressed at all when they are not needed and yet made when they are needed. This chapter will examine gene regulation or how bacteria regulate the expression of their genes so that the genes that are being expressed meet the needs of the cell for a specific growth condition. Maybe this paper will answer a few of these questions. The selection of a jury is the process that occurs right before the actual trial, and after the trial initiation and the arraignment and plea. Only about 10 percent of actual arraignments see an actual trial, because 90 percent of cases that are preparing for trial end up accepting a plea bargain (Schmalleher, 2009). Any one who is accused of a crime and will stand trial is allowed by the Sixth Amendment the right to an impartial jury. For a jury to be impartial, it is not always true that they have no prior knowledge of the case at all. In the case of a highly publicized trial, it can be almost impossible to find 12 people who know nothing about the case at hand or the accused. Some jurors will be excused based on how suitable they are judged to be for the case, and some may be excused because of reasons beyond their control (Schmalleger, 2009). I have been called to serve jury duty one time in my life. At the time I had 2 small children at home, one of them just being diagnosed with the Swine Flu 2 days prior. It uses a case study of COFERENE, a successful women’s NGO in Costa Rica, to explore the nature of partnerships, the contextual factors that shape them, the successes that can be realized from their wise use, and the potential problems that may arise. There are lessons, both optimistic and cautionary, to be learned from COFERENE’S experiences. This article analyzes these lessons.
