Perhaps it is because love offers so many elements of writing. It can be as grand as the ocean with great depths, leaving the poet free to roam about and explore. It can also have great passion and sensual power like the waves that caress and crush the shore line. Love can also be as vast and frightening as Pandora’s Box, with great unknowns and even evils such as heartbreak and the loss of a lover. It is through these different descriptions of love that great poets can share and reflect on having great love or remembering love that once was, but was lost or taken. Mark Doty’s “The Embrace” and Sharon Olds’ “Last Night” are two unusual love poems that bring several different accounts of love to light. In these unconventional love poems one can experience these differences, such as the heat of passion of a new found love that is not so innocent, and the fear and torture of grim reality as a deep love is lost. The premise of these unconventional love stories is seen in two extremely different ways throughout these poems. When one thinks of a traditional love poem, thoughts of happy times and romantic words come to mind. Not so in Doty’s “The Embrace”. ...Can Love Alone Make a Marriage Last Forever? What if every culture had the same expectations on the ideal marriage and if it was going to last? Many studies have been done over the years as to if a marriage is going to last and what the requirements are for getting married. In “Will Your Marriage Last” by Aviva Patz, she observed through different studies that the first two years of marriage can determine if your marriage will last or not. Also in Stephanie Coontz’ article, “The Radical Idea of Marrying for Love” she suggests that marrying for the sole reason of love could lead up to divorce. I believe that love should be a part of a successful marriage but not the main reason, as supported by Coontz and Patz. Many young couples or couples in general have this ideal of marriage and when it doesn’t meet up to what they expected, the relationship starts to go downhill. The many observations of Ted Huston suggest the length of your courtship before marriage is a big factor in if your marriage will be successful or not. When you are in the beginning of a relationship you are experiencing this romantic bliss and have expectations that your entire marriage will stay in this honeymoon phase, but once things start settling down you will be faced with many challenges you did not see arising. ...The last leaf “The Last Leaf” - The Hope That Heal. "The Last Leaf" by O. Henry is an interesting short story about a sick girl named Johnsy, who is deeply affected by a bare vine tree. Johnsy has decided she will not get well and has reconciled herself with the fact that she is going to die when the last leaf falls off the ivy bush outside her bedroom window. Johnsy's hopelessness and willingness to accept the worst without a fight is a major statement about the emotional state of the character. In his wonderful short-story “the last leaf”, using sacrificial themes, fear of pneumonia and a twist on the fatalistic tone, O.Henry depicted a really meaningful goal: Life must have hope. In brief, I love this story very much. Its plot and its characters are simply, but it is a very touching story that makes I recognize many things in life. Life is meaningful only for people who have hope and love. The hope helps us live better and heals our body and spirit. ...A vast amount of love is created differently in these poems. Rossetti and Armitage display true love in "Remember" and "Mother any distance", for example when Rossetti says "no more hold me by the hand", the affection is clear; likewise in "Mother any distance" when Armitage says "a second pair of hands" the reader is able to feel the true love between the mother and child. However, in the two poems "My last duchess" and "Daddy" the poets Browning and Plath display the hatred that is created between the characters. Fore example, "You disgust me" portrays the powerful hate in the poem, also shown in "Daddy" when Plath says " I have to kill you." This demonstrates across the unusual quality of the relationships. Furthermore, we can also see fake love is created in "La Belle Dame Sans Merci" and "Salome." Duffy highlights the fake love in "Salome" when she says "i'll do it again." This shows the reader that her "love" was effortless and non meaningful. This is also shown by Keats in "La Belle Dame Sans Merci" by the line "as she did love." Fake love is brought upon this poem because the love created is not real and the reader realises that love is blind. We see true love in "Remember" and "Mother any distance." ...Rising” compared to “Last Night” John Donne’s love poem "The Sun Rising" was written from a male’s point of view in the 17th century and Sharon Olds love poem "Last Night" was written in the 19th century from a female’s point of view. These two love poems have different themes on the topic of love and both are very different in language structure, as "The Sun Rising" is more formal and much more complex to read than "Last Night". Despite these differences in writing style, theme and centuries apart, the poems have great use of vivid imagery and simultaneously both use the tone of unhappiness in the beginning. In the very opening Olds uses the word “Afraid” and Donne starts off with “BUSY old fool, / unruly Sun”. Both authors rotate the tone of unhappiness in the beginning to more content and satisfied towards the end. When comparing the two love poems, the reader can see how both have great use of imagery. Olds applies a high-pressure imagery throughout the poem, setting up a tension between submissive and aggressive sensations and images. Olds gives us a vivid image of the sexual intercourse as being very hot and animalistic. She describes it as "dragonflies in the sun /100 degrees at noon /the end of their abdomens stuck together". The animalistic and hot kind of imagery, as a reader gave me a mental picture of the sexual activity being wild and just pleasurable without feelings involved just like animals that have intercourse for breeding and not for "love" as human kind.
