The Last of Us by the Makers ‘Naughty Dog’ is arguably one of the best games to have been made and certainly one of the best games to have been made for the PS3. Because of this there are many reviews based around The Last of Us and because of this I have chosen to focus my study on a review written by the webpage ‘GiantBomb’. The Last of Us has been reviewed as one of the best story lines to have been written for a game because it focuses on tragedy and the natural paternal instinct that the player begins to have for your companion, Ellie. The creative story line and the game play style gives the game a realistic feel of controversy when faced with morally obscure decisions.
Firstly, the context to which this review on The Last of Us has …show more content…
IGN is one of the leading companies for game review sites because it offers in-depth arguments on why the reader should or shouldn’t like what they’re writing about and because of this it is evident that IGN and GiantBomb are somewhat polar opposites, one focuses on facts and uses them to let the reader decide on their own what they think of the game, GiantBomb, then there is IGN – which is a very influenced website that appears to form in tangents that have been connected by almost relevant information on what a review needs. IGN talks about a few cool things that the game has to provide and then goes from tangent to tangent with irrelevant information and a lack of official information that makes the reader get emotionally invested. IGN uses a friendlier tone of writing such as “Keep running fast! Climb the scaffolding when you get to it aaaaaaaaaandd…. This isn’t going to end well, is it.”. Giant bomb uses facts and game developer quotes to influence the reader to have their own opinion on the topic, GiantBomb seems to use a more professional form of writing and uses quotes from the makers to ensure that all the information presented is not a waste of

Analysis: The Last Of Us

...The Last of Us is an action survival horror video game developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. It was released worldwide on June 14, 2013. The location of the game is based on a post-apocalyptic United States. The game follows our main protagonist Joel who is a “black market dealer within the quarantine zone, selling drugs and weapons of sorts” (IGN). He is tasked with smuggling Ellie, a young girl, to a group called the Fireflies in order to find a cure to put an end to the infection. The main antagonists of the video game are zombies. They are cannibalistic creatures that were infected by a mutation of the Cordyceps fungus. Unlike typical zombie explanations in pop culture, the Cordyceps fungus actually does exist in real life. For example, a fungus called Ophiocordyceps unilateralis invades carpenter ants’ bodies to zombify it. The fungus makes sure that the ant finds a shady, damp location where it bites a leaf and dies. This causes the fungus to keep surviving and begin the cycle all over again. Like the actual...

...Philippines, being one of the most friendly countries towards homosexuality according to a survey “The Global Divide on Homosexuality” conducted by the US-based Pew Research Center last 2013. Being a country that widely accepts homosexuality, a lot of straight men and women that are homosexuals are loud and out. Although the LGBT (lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders) are now accepted by the Philippine society, they have come a long way of struggle to gain their freedom and rights. Gays in particular, have been a great subject to social discrimination, taunts, ridicules and mockery. One of the ways the discriminated gays thought of was to come up with a code that only they will understand in order to hide from the prying eyes and ears of the society they move in. But because of the everyday and frequent use of the code in parlors, sidewalks, comedy bars and other places where gays frequently hang out. Since 1960’s where an evolution of the Filipino language sprouted called Taglish or Tagalog-English where one of its steady sources has been gay language, which has generated so many words and idioms that have been inserted in the mainstream of the everyday Taglish. As the gays started to be accepted by the society, the language grew gradually adding more and more terms from different sources. Gay language has also influenced the way the society converses and is empowering the gays more, giving them an identity and a trademark. As this language continues gradual evolution...

...The last leaf “The Last Leaf” - The Hope That Heal. "The Last Leaf" by O. Henry is an interesting short story about a sick girl named Johnsy, who is deeply affected by a bare vine tree. Johnsy has decided she will not get well and has reconciled herself with the fact that she is going to die when the last leaf falls off the ivy bush outside her bedroom window. Johnsy's hopelessness and willingness to accept the worst without a fight is a major statement about the emotional state of the character. In his wonderful short-story “the last leaf”, using sacrificial themes, fear of pneumonia and a twist on the fatalistic tone, O.Henry depicted a really meaningful goal: Life must have hope. In brief, I love this story very much. Its plot and its characters are simply, but it is a very touching story that makes I recognize many things in life. Life is meaningful only for people who have hope and love. The hope helps us live better and heals our body and spirit. Hope is the foundation of our personal futures; each of us would probably suicide without hope. It is the virtue that helps us overcome obstacles. Without hope, we seem to give up easily like Johnsy in the story. Without hope, there is nothing. Another important thing in life is love. O. Henry, through the story, advices us should love ourselves and other people. The love between three persons, Johnsy, Sue and old Behrman makes a moving story. Johnsy had sometimes forgotten loving herself and cause the worry for Sue, but the...

Shutdown

...Recently, finance headlines have all been about the US government shutdown and debt ceiling. Last Oct. 1, the US experienced its 1st government shutdown in 17 years. Since the shutdown of Oct. 1, the US stock market had been down almost every day while global stock markets experienced a roller coaster ride. This changed last Thursday when a glimmer of hope started to surface. Over the weekend, American politicians engaged in marathon discussions to solve the US government shutdown and the US debt ceiling problem. Despite the gravity of the situation in the US, some of our readers and investors are still not familiar with it. They have been asking us how this will affect our economy and stock market. Philequity Corner was conceived with a mission of educating the investing public. As part of our educational mandate, we shall discuss in this article the problems that the US is experiencing. Moreover, we shall explain how these might affect the global economy, global stocks and in particular, the local stock market. What is the US government shutdown? A government shutdown takes place when the US Congress fails to allot funds for the incoming fiscal year. This last happened in October 1995 and this current shutdown started in Oct. 1. To date, the US government has been shut down for almost two weeks already. The shutdown closed certain parts of the US government that are deemed non-essential. Some examples of these are national parks and monuments, certain services for veterans...

Change Management

...Essay Questions for Cirric Development Q#1 Lord George Robertson was known as an independent-minded leader who takes personal decisions seriously. For instance, he opposed the decision to unilaterally disarm nuclear weapons.[1] However, it is pertinent to mention that some of the decisions made by Robertson have been quite illogical. He was expected to support the disarmament proposal after joining NATO even though he never showed any interest or willingness to do so. To a large extent, Roberson was heavily inclined towards supporting American interests at the expense of NATO affairs. Nonetheless, he took a firm position in the fight against terrorism especially after the September 11 terror attacks in the United States. As a matter of fact, conjuring the fifth article on mutual defense was a pragmatic step in the right direction for the NATO Secretary General. The fight against terrorism received a new boost during his reign. Some of his critics believed that he could have done better in his leadership style than he portrayed while at the helm of NATO.[2] NATO involvement in Afghanistan could be deemed as one of the failures of Lord Robertson because he permitted the action. The gross humanitarian crisis created by NATO involvement could not be equated to the skewed objectives of the move. On the other hand, Lord Robertson played a crucial role in the campaigns to keep Scotland under the United Kingdom. This followed attempts by some leaders in Scotland to separate the...

Assess the Positive and the Negative Aspects of the United States Political Framework Based on the ‘Separation of Powers’.

...parliamentary democracy where there is a fusion of powers between branches of government 1. It is often argued that a parliamentary system of government based on a fusion of powers is a more effective form of government, particularly when legislating. Although this may be the case, the US political system has overcome issues faced by most parliamentary democracies such as elective dictatorships and poor scrutiny of the executive. This has been due to the structure of the US political system based on the separation of powers. In this essay I will assess the positive and the negative aspects of the US political system. I will evaluate the advantages and disadvantages the separation of powers has brought to the US system of government. I will first assess the positive aspects of the US political system. I will then discuss the negative aspects of the US political system, finally drawing a conclusion. The ‘separation of powers is a central structural feature of the United States constitution’ 2. The US political system was designed first and foremost to prevent tyranny, something the founding fathers still feared even after America had gained independence from British rule. When writing the US constitution, the founding fathers were worried about concentrating too much power in any one institution 3. The framers therefore dispersed constitutional authority between the three branches of government and the accumulation of power in the hands of a single institution was denied 4...

Ifrs in the United States: If When and How

...IFRS in the United States: If, When and How Donna L. Street s described by Erchinger (2012), for decades various United States (US) Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chairs and Chief Accountants have expressed support for the development of one set of globally accepted accounting standards. Since the formation of the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) in 2001, SEC leaders have repeatedly indicated that the logical choice for globally accepted standards is the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) issued by the IASB. However, in line with other large economies, such as Japan, India and China, as of June 2012 the US had not adopted IFRS.1 This paper explores when and how, and indeed if, IFRS will become the basis for the financial reporting of domestic SEC registrants in the US. Readers are encouraged to first review Erchinger’s (2012) history of the SEC’s consideration of IFRS in the US included in this forum and especially Table 1 of this article, which provides a chronology of SEC releases regarding incorporation of IFRS into the US financial reporting model. This paper complements Erchinger’s by assessing approaches recently explored by the SEC for incorporating IFRS into the US financial reporting model. A decision can lead to correct or incorrect action. However, as articulated by many SEC constituents, uncertainty associated with repeated delays and hence ‘no decision’ by the SEC is clearly not in the best interest of investors and other financial...

Senior Year Research Paper

...four years ago on an ordinary September day. All of us were scared, excited, and nervous for what Schalick was going to offer us. As young “fresh meat”, we didn’t know what to expect, going off of those movies where high school is all fun and games. Some of us expected that we would get lost, or shoved in a locker. Instead, we’ve made new friends, and were able to familiarize ourselves with what would be our second home for the next four years. We were able to experience what every Schalick student enjoys about high school: the football games, the pep rallies, homecoming, and Green and Gold. If our freshman year was this good, what could the rest of high school hold for us? When sophomore year came by, we were able to feel more comfortable with our surroundings and we knew what to expect. New classes meant new experiences. Driver’s Ed is something all of us had waited for. Receiving your blue card symbolized getting one step closer to adulthood and freedom. And who could forget about the famous leaf project, that has impacted our lives...

The End Times

...------------------------------------------------- Prophecy in the Last Days Study by: Elder Abraham Juma ------------------------------------------------- True Prophet vs. False Prophet A prophet is anyone who bears the message of God and conveys it to others. The messages of God can never contradict one another. The Spirit that inspired the writers of the Bible inspires every true prophet, and brings to clear view the thoughts of God revealed in the Bible instead of contradicting it. Those who contradict the Bible are under the inspiration of another spirit. We call them false prophets. God’s thoughts in the Bible are complete and clear, without any contradictions. Though the thoughts of God were written in human language by human beings, they show a clear purpose of God’s love. Sometimes they appear to contradict, but if read ‘precept upon precept’ and ‘line upon line’, ‘hare a little and there a little’ all apparent contradiction is dissolved, and a perfect harmony seen. God’s word is perfect. Those who teach principles contradicting the Bible are not better than the Bible; they are actually being inspired by Satan. God cannot contradict His word; see the story of the prophet in 1Kings 13:1-28. God communicates through the Bible. If He must send a prophet, the prophet cannot contradict the Bible. Again I say, if he contradicts the Bible, he is a false prophet. God has not sent Him. Christ has a message to the world, and He puts His Spirit in a person who communicates...
