Book Report Last Shot By: John Feinstein Stevie Thomas and Susan Anderson were winners of a 14 year old and under writing contest sponsored by the USA Basketball Writers Association. As top prize for their success of winning the contest they got to go to the NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four held in New Orleans. At the final four they would get to meet and interview players from the four universities competing in the event. In addition, Stevie and Susan had their picture taken for the cover of the Workers Journalist. Duke, St. Joes, Minnesota State, and Connecticut were the schools fighting for the NCAA Men’s Basketball championship. Susan did her report to win her contest on Coach K for Duke. Susan lived in North Carolina and was a big Duke fan. Stevie who hated Duke, wanted St. Joes to win the hoops tourney. Stevie gave his report on the Palastra; the infamous basketball arena located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. When Stevie and Susan arrived in New Orleans where the final four was taking place, they were given media passes to the event. Stevie and Susan went to the CBS station to conduct interviews with players and coaches. Upon arriving at the station, Stevie and Susan saw Chip Graber. Chip, who was Stevie’s favorite player on the Minnesota St. roster, was having a conversation with someone. Stevie and Susan hid to listen in on the conversation. It turned out, that the man talking to Chip Graber was attempting to blackmail Chip into throwing the championship game! The man had gambling debts to pay and threatened Chip with a falsified transcript which would disqualify Chip and his team from the tourney. When finding out about the blackmail, Stevie and Susan talked to Chip and tried to help him. After talking to Chip, Stevie and Susan were kidnapped. The person that kidnapped Stevie and Susan and blackmailing Chip was his athletic trainer. He wanted Chip to lose to Duke in the Championship. During the championship game, Chip did well in the first half but was still worried about the kids. Chip’s dad’s friend went and broke the kids out a brought them to the game. During the second half of the game, after Chip caught eye of Stevie and Susan he dominated the half and hit a three point basket to lead Minnesota St. to the victory over Duke. At the conclusion of the game, Stevie and Susan became Minnesota St. fans because of their friendship with Chip. Last Shot was a great book because not only am I a college basketball fan, but I am also a fan of Coach K, Mike Krzyzewski and Duke University. The book had a great storyline and was also a mystery. Real life people, such as my favorite basketball analyst Dick Vitale, were characters in the book. I am a fan of the author John Feinstein. John Feinstein is the author of several sports related books, including a book I read entitled Forever’s Team. Sports related books are my favorite to read because they hold my interest. I was also able to learn a little bit about what the media has to do to get access to players and coaches. The book turned out to be a quick read for me. The basketball and mystery were able to hold my attention and it didn’t take long for me to read. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes to read mysteries or is a fan of basketball.

You are saying to yourself that this is completely out of character of the man you knew who always wore a smile wherever he was seen. I know I will be villified by the LAPD and the media. Unfortunately, this is a necessary evil that I do not enjoy but must partake and complete for substantial change to occur within the LAPD and reclaim my name. The department has not changed since the Rampart and Rodney King days. It has gotten worse. The consent decree should never have been lifted. The only thing that has evolved from the consent decree is those officers involved in the Rampart scandal and Rodney King incidents have since promoted to supervisor, commanders, and command staff, and executive positions. Bloodlines of the Illuminati

...Bloodlines of Illuminati by: Fritz Springmeier, 1995 Introduction: I am pleased & honored to present this book to those in the world who love the truth. This is a book for lovers of the Truth. This is a book for those who are already familiar with my past writings. An Illuminati Grand Master once said that the world is a stage and we are all actors. Of course this was not an original thought, but it certainly is a way of describing the Illuminati view of how the world works. The people of the world are an audience to which the Illuminati entertain with propaganda. Just one of the thousands of recent examples of this type of acting done for the public was President Bill Clinton’s 1995 State of the Union address. The speech was designed to push all of the warm fuzzy buttons of his listening audience that he could. All the green lights for acceptance were systematically pushed by the President’s speech with the help of a controlled congressional audience. The truth on the other hand doesn’t always tickle the ear and warm the ego of its listeners. The light of truth in this book will be too bright for some people who will want to return to the safe comfort of their darkness. I am not a conspiracy theorist. I deal with real facts, not theory. Some of the people I write about, I have met. Some of the people I expose are alive and very dangerous. The darkness has never liked the light. Yet, many of the secrets of the Illuminati are locked up tightly simply because secrecy is a way...

Moneyball

...Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game Michael Lewis For Billy Fitzgerald I can still hear him shouting at me Lately in a wreck of a Californian ship, one of the passengers fastened a belt about him with two hundred pounds of gold in it, with which he was found afterwards at the bottom. Now, as he was sinking-had he the gold? or the gold him? —John Ruskin, Unto This Last Preface I wrote this book because I fell in love with a story. The story concerned a small group of undervalued professional baseball players and executives, many of whom had been rejected as unfit for the big leagues, who had turned themselves into one of the most successful franchises in Major League Baseball. But the idea for the book came well before I had good reason to write it—before I had a story to fall in love with. It began, really, with an innocent question: how did one of the poorest teams in baseball, the Oakland Athletics, win so many games? For more than a decade the people who run professional baseball have argued that the game was ceasing to be an athletic competition and becoming a financial one. The gap between rich and poor in baseball was far greater than in any other professional sport, and widening rapidly. At the opening of the 2002 season, the richest team, the New York Yankees, had a payroll of $126 million while the two poorest teams, the Oakland A's and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, had payrolls of less than a third of that, about $40 million. A decade before, the highest payroll...

...C h a p t e r 1 Prewriting GETTING STARTED (OR SOUP-CAN LABELS CAN BE FASCINATING) For many writers, getting started is the hardest part. You may have noticed that when it is time to begin a writing assignment, you suddenly develop an enormous desire to straighten your books, water your plants, or sharpen your pencils for the fifth time. If this situation sounds familiar, you may find it reassuring to know that many professionals undergo these same strange compulsions before they begin writing. Jean Kerr, author of Please Don’t Eat the Daisies, admits that she often finds herself in the kitchen reading soup-can labels—or anything—in order to prolong the moments before taking pen in hand. John C. Calhoun, vice president under Andrew Jackson, insisted he had to plow his fields before he could write, and Joseph Conrad, author of Lord Jim and other novels, is said to have cried on occasion from the sheer dread of sitting down to compose his stories. To spare you as much hand-wringing as possible, this chapter presents some practical suggestions on how to begin writing your short essay. Although all writers must find the methods that work best for them, you may find some of the following ideas helpful. But no matter how you actually begin putting words on paper, it is absolutely essential to maintain two basic ideas concerning your writing task. Before you write a single sentence, you should always remind yourself that 1. You have some valuable ideas to tell your reader,...

...first day I walked into the White House on January 20, 1993, to take on a new role and experiences that would test and transform me in unexpected ways. By the time I crossed the threshold of the White House, I had been shaped by my family upbringing, education, religious faith and all that I had learned before―as the daughter of a staunch conservative father and a more liberal mother, a student activist, an advocate for children, a lawyer, Bill’s wife and Chelsea’s mom. For each chapter, there were more ideas I wanted to discuss than space allowed; more people to include than could be named; more places visited than could be described. If I mentioned everybody who has impressed, inspired, taught, influenced and helped me along the way, this book would be several volumes long. Although I’ve had to be selec- tive, I hope that I’ve conveyed the push and pull of events and relationships that affected me and continue to shape and enrich my world today. Since leaving the White House I have embarked on a new phase of my life...
