Lateral Thinking

...Bono coined the phrase "lateral thinking" as a counterpoint to conventional or vertical thinking. In conventional thinking people go forward in a predictable, direct fashion. Lateral thinking involves approaching the problem from new directions – literally from the side. De Bono defines the four main aspects of lateral thinking as: The recognition of dominant polarizing ideas The search for different ways of looking at things A relaxation of the rigid control of vertical thinking The use of chance There are dominant ideas in every walk of life – the assumptions, rules and conventions that underpin systems and influence people's thinking and attitudes. The idea that the Earth was flat or that the Earth was the center of the universe are examples of dominant ideas that polarized thought along set lines. Once the dominant ideas are in place everything else is viewed in a way that supports them. A paranoid person sees every attempt to help them as malevolent and manipulating. Someone who believes in a conspiracy theory will explain away any inconvenient facts as deliberately constructed by the powers behind the conspiracy. Most organizations have dominant ideas that polarize their view of the world. It is easy for us to criticize the makers of horse-drawn carriages who thought automobiles were silly contraptions that would never catch on. People now, however, are also the captives of established ideas. A Technique for Lateral Thinking A lateral thinking technique is to...

Research Strategy to Saving Money

...Having a research strategy to saving money can be very useful in providing a first step in reaching the goal of financial security. It has been argued that the American society is materialistic and accustomed to instant gratification. Easy lines of credit and lack of proper money management have led many in deep financial straits. The recent high unemployment numbers and the deep recession have contributed greatly to this. However not everyone was affected. One major reason is because some were conscious about saving for a rainy day. In fact “Compared to a year ago, 50 percent more Americans are beefing up their savings account, according to a new survey by Money Management International, Houston” (Ginovsky J., 2009, p.12). Americans are realizing that savings must become a priority. I for one can honestly say that I am one of those Americans. I’m starting to feel the need to start saving more and spend less. My personal situation did changed significantly in the last year and is the driving force behind trying to save more. The fact that my son came into our lives is a wonderful experience that I would never trade for anything in the world. However the reality is that it does add a strain on the budget. Adding to this is the fact that my wife quit her job to stay home and raise our son. Also the decision to go back to school is another contributing factor that stretches the budget even more. On top of all of this within the last year I knew I would loose...

...in capital letters. 4. TRANSIENT: A. temporary B. shining C. dull D. permanent Questions 5-8 are based on the following passage. Although the schooling of fish is a familiar form of animal social behavior, how the school is formed and maintained is only beginning to be understood in detail. It had been thought that each fish maintains its position chiefly by means of vision. Our work has shown that, as each fish maintains its position, the lateral line, an organ sensitive to transitory changes in water displacement, is as important as vision. In each species a fish has a "preferred" distance and angle from its nearest neighbor. The ideal separation and bearing, however, are not maintained rigidly. The result is a probabilistic arrangement that appears like a random aggregation. The tendency of the fish to remain at the preferred distance and angle, however, serves to maintain the structure. Each fish, having established its position, uses its eyes and its lateral lines...

Business Email

...------------------------------------------------- The Business Edge Program – giving employers what they want The development of employability skills, commonly referred to as key, core or generic skills, in business graduates is of increasing importance to employers worldwide. This focus on fostering skills, attributes and knowledge which better prepare students for the workplace is not a new concept but one recognised in both education and industry as now being a pivotal element of business undergraduate education. In 2002, the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry [ACCI] and the Business Council of Australia [BCA] developed a national framework for employability skills (Department of Education, Science and Training [DEST], 2002), see table below. In line with changing global and national business environments, a more contemporary employability framework is needed to first, reflect evolving industry requirements and second, to provide the Business Edge (BE) program with a clear set of program outcomes. As a core component of the Bachelor of Business, BE is based on a framework which captures and reflects current employer preferences and priorities (see table below); ensuring that ECU business graduates meet the expectations of today’s employers. 2002 Employability skills framework1 | ECU Graduate Attributes | 2010 BE Employability Skills framework2 | Communication | Ability to communicate | Communicating effectively | Teamwork | Ability to work in teamsCross...

Explore the Importance of an Idea Having Value

...Explore the Importance of an Idea Having Value For an idea to be perceived as a good one – does it need to be completely new, or incredibly useful. Maybe it needs to be both. Are the ‘new’ ideas that people are thinking of actually just revitalised versions of an already existing idea? Or do people not have enough experience in the field of ‘creative thinking’ and give up too easy? It is inevitable that people perceive creativity in different ways, but this essay will explore and discuss the debate of ideas, the process of ideas, and the importance of ideas obtaining worth and reasoning. Some people believe that for an idea to be a good one, it needs to have value. Speaking in a video titled “Edward De Bono on Creative Thinking”, De Bono states that he believes an idea with no value is “just being different for the sake of being different”, which he thinks is what gives creativity a bad name. He uses the example of creating a ‘triangular door’, despite the fact that doors are always rectangular. He states that if you cannot prove the value of this idea, then this is just being different for the sake of it, which he does not deem as creativity (2006). This shows that whilst De Bono supports this idea of creativity, he believes ideas should be not only new, but also useful. Expanding on an idea with no true reason is not something he believes is necessary. Robinson also agrees with this notion, stating, “Creativity is the process of having original ideas that have value. It is...

Pensamiento Creativo
