No one can really know what a police officer goes through besides police officers and all the dangers and obstacles that they over come every day. Law enforcement today is different and more complicated then is was in the past, but there are so many resources that are out there to help each level function better and help to solve and prevent crimes. Cops face different issues every day that they suit up and go to work and they may never know what is ahead of them. With all that is going on in the world and in society there are issues that are always there and may never change. One big issue that officers face is brutality on the public by other officers. Just in the past year or so there have been a number of cases where the public feels that officers used force that was inappropriate, like the officers in New York, where they put a man in choke hold and died. The biggest fight against cops on this issue would have to be Ferguson, Missouri incident. There are many different stories on this but there are two views, one the cop defended his own life, and two the cop shot and killed a young man for nothing. No matter personal opinion on this issue it creates another issue that cops face every day and that is not having trust with the community which is a must. If the community does not feel that the officers are there to protect them then the community is not going to be there to help the officers when they are in need of help. The people that the officers serve and protect can help them solve crimes and in cases even help prevent crimes from happening. Another issue that cops can face is corruption within its own department. In the late 1990’s there was one of the biggest scandals of a police department at LAPD (Los Angeles Police Department) called the Rampart Scandal. This came about

...Law Enforcement Today Tammy Sepulveda CJS/200 Version 6 08/26/2012 Charles Musselwhite Law Enforcement Today The major issue facing Police Departments today are all of the budget cutbacks. Many police agencies suffer all the way around the table with less money to work with in a fiscal year. They have had to eliminate certain units that are an important part of crime control and catching criminals. Some of these include; gang units, narcotics unit, mounted patrol, and also eliminating many civilian positions. Not only do the cutbacks affect each unit within the department, but the department as a whole. They have fewer resources to work with when they cannot afford the proper training, equipment and technology. With all of these issue’s they have to deal with, it makes their jobs that much harder. The budget cuts have affected many places across the United States. Crime rates have gone up in many areas; where at one point the crime rate was going down. Newark NJ Police Director Garry McCarthy stated at the Perf’s Summit on the Economy in 2010 that “they had four consecutive years of shooting reductions and murder reductions, but now his shootings are up for the year and so is the murder rate”. “The purpose of the SLFC Program is to establish partnerships with State, local and regional fusion centers that facilitate the lawful sharing of homeland security information and intelligence”. Law Enforcement Today

... American policing in today’s society looks quite different from past policing; in fact, the law enforcement structure of the United States been called the most complex system in the world (Schmalleger 2011). There are three major components that exist within the legislative and judicial jurisdictions in the United States; they are federal, state, and local agencies. Each of these jurisdictions has created and designated different police agencies to enforce their laws. Although, they all work to enforce laws to keep citizens safe, the uniformity between the agencies is not so bonded. The function, authority and or even the naming of the agencies are all separately decided. In an already complicated system, it is becoming complex with the growth of private security firms; they operate on a for-profit basis and provide services that have traditionally been regarded as law enforcement activities (Schmalleger 2011). The Federal Bureau of Investigation known in short as the FBI is a federal agency and just might be the most known and recognized law enforcement agency in the world. The FBI has been around for about 100 years. It started off as the Bureau of Investigation in 1908. The FBI main objective today is as follows “The Mission of the FBI is to protect and defend the United States against terrorist and foreign intelligence threats; to uphold and enforce the criminal laws of the United States; and to provide leadership and criminal justice services to federal, state...

...Law Enforcement Today Steven Camp CJS/200 Apr 26, 2015 Keith MC Ininch Law Enforcement Today Policing today’s American society has become more than just capturing the criminals. The daily tasks of law enforcement on local, state, and federal levels are challenging for these agencies. Law enforcement today must cope with issues, maintain and improve interaction amongst the upper and lower levels of the agencies, and look for ways to improve upon those relationships, all in an effort to protect and serve. Law enforcement agencies, more particular, the officers who work in those agencies, are constantly faced with issues of trust and integrity (Schmalleger, 2001). The dangers associated with being a law enforcement agent are inherent to the job itself. Officers are subject to violence of the offenders, health hazards at crime scenes, and the dangers of vehicular traffic among other dangers. Schmalleger presents that 134 law enforcement officers were killed in the line of duty in 2008 (pp. 276). Issues of racial and biased profiling also present problems for law enforcement. It is important for officers to maintain a balance of justice and to treat all citizens equally. This becomes an issue many times when the crime occurs and the victim of said crime was a member of a minority group. If the victim were black in a predominantly white community, the police may find themselves looked at as not doing all they can to find the criminal. On the other side of that, if the criminal...

...Law Enforcement Today Paper Law Enforcement Today Law enforcement is something that is needed in our country. As time has passed, crime rates have gone up. New types of crimes are created by just about anything. Let’s take a look at an example of a new crime starting up. People who are driving and texting is now becoming a crime. This may seem like something minor, but it can lead to something horrible, like the cause to a fatal accident. The driver who was busy texting his buddy that he was on the way to the bar could of caused him to get to close to another car and crash into it, causing vehicle damages and even death. With technology advancing, crime has gone up with it as well. Now people commit crime online by stealing credit card numbers and even a person’s identity. Our law enforcement agencies now have to stay on top of things in today’s world, because if they don’t, the bad guys will win. Our law enforcement agencies are made up of local, state, and federal. They interact with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to ensure success with enforcing the law and keeping communities safe. They might not have the best relationship but there can be ways to improve that. Many people do not really understand the importance of law enforcement until they desperately need them to help in their time of need. Some of the things that we do not understand are that the law enforcement officers face many challenges in today’s society. Our officers have to go through...

...Law Enforcement Today CSJ / 200 In a time of transition, the National Security Strategy provides a broad overview of the role of the United States in the world, somehow, is more ambitious than any of those listed, which were more concerned about the particular threat of Islam terrorism, the war in Iraq and the goal of advancing freedom. While still focused on these problems even reformulated, also seeks to extend the notion of security, argued against the divisions between domestic and foreign affairs. For some this may seem like a smart move to get new supporters in his ambitious domestic agenda. ...Assignment Law Enforcement Today CJS/200 May 20, 2012 Ryan A. Conti Law Enforcement Today Today’s law enforcement officers are faced with difficult challenging issues. Being trained efficiently is most important so they know how to respond to the many different issues. According to Schmalleger (2011), corruption, on duty dangers, deadly force, and racial profiling are just some issues today’s law enforcement has to deal with. Multicultural society is one of the main challenges that police officers face on a day to day bases. To “protect and serve” is the number one duty of law enforcement. According to Schmalleger (2011), it is important as a police officer to understand and respect the different habits, customs, beliefs, patterns of thought and traditions of the people. Law enforcement officers need to be able to have an understanding on the differences of a multicultural society and a lot of the issues that occur can be resolved. Another problem that has been an issue is corruption. There are a lot officers that perform their job according to the law but there are those few that do not. Schmalleger (2011) stated, “Police corruption is the abuse of police authority for personal or organizational gain” (p.269). Unfortunately, police corruption affects not only the police officers but also their community, the police department, and other police departments worldwide. Police corruption comes in the form of violent crimes, bribes, property bribes...

Future of Policing

...The future of policing Jennifer Picard CJS/210 08/24/2014 Michael Crumpler The future of policing Many police officers believe that 20 years from now some of them will be able to operate much of the things they do today. They will have the advance technology, and the operating concepts which are driving the significant changes in the day to day operations. There is also many of the police officers who will have the personal education, and to build the internal support which will include changes in transitioning to the shared technical platforms, and the leveraging of technologies. This will then give the criminals new technology that will become available. The one key to the future of policing will not be the technology. It will be the ways which police forces will adapt to the technology to their needs. There is also the technology that will be used to predict a crime before it happens. This will help lessen the crime rates before they get out of hand. This will also reduce the agencies costs. The predictive-policing models by the police department builds, and enhances the promise of the new intelligence led policing with this new technology, new business process, and new algorithms, the predictive policing is based on the information based patrol, and the rapid response. It is supported by the preposition of assets, and the proactive, and the strategy, and police. This is the predictive policing which promises measurable results, includes the crime reduction. Police agencies normally have numerous functions, but are based on Sir Robert Peel’s (1788-1850) “Peelian Principles” which are normally seen as the basic foundation for current law enforcement organizations and community policing throughout the world, (Nazemi, 2009). The founder of the first metropolitan police, Peel inadvertently founded the standard for modern policing. Although each of these principles was created in the 1800’s, they still hold very true today: 1. “The basic mission for which the police exist is to prevent crime and disorder.” 2. “The ability of the police to perform their duties is dependent upon public approval of police actions.” 3. “Police must secure the willing co-operation of the public in voluntary observance of the law to be able to secure and maintain the respect of the public.” 4. “The degree of co-operation of the public that can be secured diminishes proportionately to the necessity of the use of physical force.”  5. “Police seek and preserve public favor not by catering to the public opinion but by constantly demonstrating absolute impartial service to the law.”  6. “Police use physical force to the extent necessary to secure observance of the law or to restore order only...

Assignment 1 Predictive Policing

...Predictive Policing Walter Clay Strayer University Predictive Policing In order to compare and contrast the application of information technology (IT) to optimize police departments’ performance to reduce crime versus random patrols of the streets. We have to look into the technologies available to them today. Predictive policing has become the one of leading standard for police departments today. Predictive policing primary role is to simply pre-empt crime, it is rooted heavily in business analytics and relies advanced technical tools and data analysis. In 2009, Charlie Beck, Chief of Detectives for the Los Angeles defined predictive policing in the following terms: “With new technology, new business processes, and new algorithms, predictive policing is based on directed, information-based patrol; rapid response supported by fact-based prepositioning of assets; and proactive, intelligence-based tactics, strategy, and policy. The predictive-policing era promises measurable results, including crime reduction; more efficient police agencies; and modern, innovative policing.” Dr. John Morgan introduced the five elements of predictive policing that focuses on integrated operations, seeing the big picture, cutting-edge analysis and technology, linkage to performance, and the adaptability to changing conditions. Technology is used in many different ways to implement the basics of the five elements. It is used for simple tasks as crowd control to the complex task of traffic...

Policy

...Policy Issues and the Police AJS/582 February 14, 2012 Abstract Community policing is a new idea that has been introduced to law enforcement. The program is federally funded and was created with the intentions of providing citizens the opportunity to work collectively along side with the police to diminish fear and crimes within communities. By examining police departments within the Unites States which has implemented community policing programs, a determination of whether there has been a positive or negative change can be concluded. Community policing, when implemented and organized properly is the ideal situation for police departments and the communities to build an alliance against crime. Community Policing Foot patrol or walking the beat are the many terms used to represent community policing. This community relationship has been a subject of discussion and research since the early 1900’s and still is today (Trojanowicz ,1986). Community policing was established with the idea of local law enforcement and the community working collectively, focusing on reducing and eventually preventing crime and social disorder. The strategy is to achieve a more valuable and proficient crime control, reduce terror of crime and improve quality of life. Community policing also helps the police gain the trust and cooperation of the community by having a strong presence in the area.  Most importantly...

Abstract: This paper will compare and contrast the application of information technology (IT) to optimize police departments’ performance to reduce crime versus random patrols of the streets. It will describe how COMSTAT as an information system (IS) implements the four (4) basic (IS) functions; and will discuss the fashion is which IT systems have made police departments more efficient in preventing and responding to crime. I will also explore the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunity , and Threats (SWOT) analysis. This is essential for police departments that intend to use the implementation of the new predictive policing. Introduction: For years, business have used data analysis to anticipate market conditions or industry trends and drive sales strategies. Police are using a similar data analysis tool to make their work more efficient. The idea is being called predictive policing. Predictive policing, in essence, is taking data from disparate sources, analyzing them and then using the results to anticipate, prevent and respond more effectively to future crime. ...lives of citizens. Community policing is based on Peel's concept of prevention. Community policing has been embraced by many law enforcement organizations across our country. Community policing is based on its goal to prevent crime and promote better police-community partnerships. Community policing requires an investment in training with special attention to problem analysis and problem solving, facilitation, community organization; communication, mediation and conflict resolution, resource identification and use, networking and linkages, and cross-cultural competency. Public approval and cooperation is a basis of Sir Robert Peel’s principles of effective policing. Peel stated that the ability of the police to perform their duties is dependent upon public approval of police actions and they must secure the willing co-operation of the public in voluntary observance of the law to be able to secure and maintain the respect of the public. In our diverse society, it is necessary for police to understand the different cultures that make up the communities that they patrol. This can be accomplished through multi-cultural training and education. If police can relate to and understand the different cultures of the community, they will be able to successfully gain public approval. Public approval of the police will increase the effectiveness of law enforcement. Peel stated "the degree of co-operation of the...
