The Mathematics Educator 2005, Vol. 8. N0.2. 53-70 Working with Logarithms: Students' Misconceptions and Errors Chua Boon Liang and Eric Wood National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University Abstract: This study examines secondary school students' understandings and misconceptions when working with logarithms using a specially designed test instrument administered to 81 students in two Singapore schools. Questions were classified by cognitive level. The data were analysed to uncover the kinds of errors made and their possible causes. Students appear capable of doing routine calculations but less capable when answering questions which require higher levels of cognitive thinking. In addition, many errors are not due to lack of knowledge but appear to be based on over-generalisation of algebraic rules. Suggestions for practice based on these findings are provided. Introduction Anecdotal evidence from teachers and colleagues over the years has consistently confirmed that teaching logarithms in secondary school is difficult; and, even though students can often "do" the questions that are in the text and on the examinations, their understanding of the hndamental nature of logarithms remains...

...1 The Foundations of International Society 2013-2014 Part I: Politics 2 (International Relations I) Paper organiser: Professor Christopher Hill (POLIS): Room 105, Alison Richard Building Email: cjh68@cam.ac.uk Lecturers: Professor Hill (CH), Dr Elisabetta Brighi (EB), Dr Aaron Rapport (AR) and Dr Stefano Recchia (SR). Aims and Objectives The course aims to introduce students to the subject of International Relations (IR), whose main focus is the nature of politics at the international level. Students will acquire the empirical and conceptual foundations needed to understand a world political system which cannot be accurately described as either pure anarchy or a coherent form of ‘global governance’. The starting point is the notion of ‘international society’, which refers to the set of institutions and common procedures generated by states over the last three and a half centuries in their attempts to achieve some minimal form of co-existence, but which has gradually evolved to include many non-state actors and different levels of activity – diplomatic, economic and cultural, as well as that of military competition. By the end of the course you should be able to have an informed discussion about: the historical origins of the present system; what is distinctive about international politics as opposed to politics inside the state; and the main challenges which confront humanity in the twenty-first century. You will also acquire a basic familiarity with the main theories needed...

Why GAO Did This Study What GAO Found Since 2010, the United States has suffered grave damage to national security and an increased risk to the lives of U.S. personnel due to unauthorized disclosures of classified information by individuals with authorized access to defense information systems. Congress and the President have issued requirements for structural reforms and a new program to address insider threats. The Department of Defense (DOD) components GAO selected for review have begun implementing insider-threat programs that incorporate the six minimum standards called for in Executive Order 13587 to protect classified information and systems. For example, the components have begun to provide insider-threat awareness training to all personnel with security clearances. In addition, the components have incorporated some of the actions associated with a framework of key elements that GAO developed from a White House report, an executive order, DOD guidance and reports, national security systems guidance, and leading practices recommended...
