Lead in Candy A recent issue that has generated a good deal of controversy is contaminants in children's candy, imported mostly from Mexico. The Orange County Register (OC Register) conducted an investigation and “recommendations emerged from sources during the course of the investigation” (2013). Recommendations include, but are not limited to, train “candy makers” on ways to reduce lead; testing of manufactures and providers of chili, tamarind, and packaging; improve communication by sharing data in-house and with Mexican officials to coerce change of production methods; and publicize the effects of lead on children’s health (and in adults, especially during pregnancy), such as delayed growth, hearing and weight loss, untimely birth, permanent brain damage and even death, for example (UCLA Report, 2009). The OC Register (2013) states that, “some changes have occurred on both sides of the border.” As an example, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) relayed a letter to candy producers saying it will start the process of setting a lower acceptable level of lead in domestic products, and the agency stresses that the new maximum levels are “achievable under good manufacturing practices in the production of candies and candy ingredients” (Food Navigator USA, 2006). In addition, it is important to mention that the number of cases of lead poisoning have dropped dramatically over the last two decades, due largely to both environmental regulations and ongoing efforts from the public health community (UCLA Report, 2009).

Nonetheless, parents and pregnant women should be prudent about serving and/or consuming candy imported in this country from Mexico.

Lead in Candy

...Lead in Candy In this essay I will write about the growing concern of toxic candy, or more specifically, lead in candy. The California Department of Health Services has documented more than 1,500 tests of Mexican candy since 1993, and one in four of those results have come up high for lead. (McKim, Jenifer. Sharon, Keith and Heisel, William., the Register August 21, 2013) How does the lead even get into the candy? For starters there were 112 brands of candy; most of those came from Mexico that registered dangerous levels of lead over the past decade. In 101 cases, no action was taken against the candy makers. The results were kept confidential, and the candy remained on store shelves. Keeping the public misinformed, or hiding the truth will allow the public to keep purchasing toxic candy. The state makes no effort to notify candy companies in Mexico when their brands test high enough to harm a child. Candy maker after candy maker said they had no idea regulators had found lead in their products. Are the Candy producers truly ignorant to this situation? It first must be understood that regulating the fast growing $620 million Mexican candy industry is riddled with problems because they have too few resources, they have no jurisdiction in Mexico, and if the United States has no jurisdiction, how can they stop Mexico from pumping lead into the candy? A rational response should be for the United States to place a block or boycott on candy producers from Mexico. Without doing so...

Great Gatsby

...are also why Steinbeck created the characters the way he did. George, Lennie, and Candy seemed to be a few of the main characters. There were a few different personalities among the three. George was kind and helpful, Lennie had a mental disability, and Candy was a helpless guy that had lots of love for his dog that his so called buddies killed. Similarities between Lennie and Candy are so similar that you would probably mistake them for the same character. One of the main similarities is that George and Candy just want to get away and live off the ranch. St one point George suggest to Candy that they should go away and be free from all their problems, George would of course let Lennie tend the rabbits. Lennie is a very strange character. Something that he finds really interesting is touching soft things, it make him happy. Steinbeck writes about Lennie being so attracted to soft things so the readers can think of him being really weird and strange. As Lennie touches his soft things he tends to get too much into the moment and unintentionally destroyed and crushes it without even thinking about it. Crooks and Candy are the most self centered characters in the story. Steinbeck does this on purpose to give an idea of marginalization. Crooks is an old “black” bitter guy, although he has all right to be that way. Candy is an old crippled man who has lost his hand and is attached to his aging dog. Candy is a passive man who is unable to take any kind of independent action. Both characters...

...Question 2: Discuss the main sources of innovation, and what are particularly important for a company such as Skullcandy and why? MGT3130 Innovation and Technology Management – CP2 Question 1 Skull candy team structure can be characterised as hybrid lightweight and heavyweight. On the basis of it being lightweight the skull candy team members would still reside in their functional departments (Melissa A. Schilling 2010). The light weight teams at Skull candy have a very clear functional affiliation and would only work on the project that is given part time. The location of the team members of the Skull candy will always be in their functions thus allowing them to easily work together. Therefore the team members conduct the projects in their own departments (V. Patrick et all 2007). The functional departments will always have the responsibility of the work being done in that department. The skull candy case shows that there is close contact between the team members and also the functional managers and the project manager. Skull candy light weight team structure is cross-functional however they will be under the control of their respective functional managers (Clayton M.Christensen et all 1997). Does Sex Sell?

...imagery is an effective means to draw attention to a product. However, the marketing industry must be wary of images that traditionalize or stereotype male-female gender roles. The above advertisement is a good example of an advertisement that uses sexual imagery to draw attention to a product. The above image shows two women holding two different food bars. Both women are of similar height, ethnicity and hair color. The differences between the women are that the woman on the left is a plus-size woman holding a sugary candy bar whereas the woman on the right is a lean woman holding a Detour protein bar. The text at the top of the advertisement states, “There’s Candy Bars...Then There’s PROTEIN Candy Bars.” (Cape). The advertisers of the referenced image use a, “if you eat this product, then you get this result” sort-of comparison when describing both of the women and both of the food bars. The chocolate candy bar, assuming that it is similar to most candy bars, is high in sugar, and is considered to be full of “empty calories”. The term “empty calories” means that this snack has a high caloric content, containing few to no essential nutrients, such as vitamins and minerals. Similar foods, considered to be “junk food”, which...

Marijuana Is Safer Than Alcohol

...Marijuana should be legalized for recreational purposes to anyone over 21 years of age. Jason Anderson COM/156 MARCH 2, 2011 Colleen Vosicky Marijuana should be legalized for recreational purposes to anyone over 21 years of age. Marijuana has been proven to be safer than alcohol, yet marijuana is against the law. Alcohol is known to contribute to acts of violence and crime, while in most cases cannabis can reduce aggression in its users. “In last year’s cases of reported violent crime three million offenders had been drinking. Almost all cases of date rape, sexual assault, and domestic violence had some kind of connection to alcohol” (Medical Fact: Marijuana is Safer Than Alcohol, 2009). Marijuana has not been linked or has been left absent from any of those type of crime reports. Alcohol-related traffic accidents have gone down in the past 20 to 30 years; however, they still kill approximately 14,000 lives every year according to MADD. The numbers for THC-related traffic deaths are very rare because most of the deaths in these cases the driver was also under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. However, “there is evidence from a number of studies, including some laboratory simulations that give power to the idea that people under the influence of cannabis seem to be aware of their impaired motor skills, and two tend to drive below the posted speed limit. 2012 Town Hall Debate

...Town Hall Debate: President Obama vs. Governor Romney The issue of whether President Obama is suitable to be the President of America has been widely debated in the 2012 American Electoral Debate. Polls show Governor Romney taking the lead in many states. The debate is an important issue because it concerns the well being of America, the tremendous debt they are in and the poor economy resulting in high unemployment rates. This paper will consider the arguments and points of both President Barrack Obama and Governor Mitt Romney in the 2012 Town Hall Debate. It will then put forward reasons why both candidates deserve the title of the President of the United States. Town hall meetings are an indication of early American democracy that today modern candidates are very familiar with. It is the democratic process in which fellow Americans ask the candidates serious questions about issues they are concerned with. Neither candidate goes into this debate knowing the questions being asked, only the mediator is notified and in this case it was Candy Crawford. During the debate a few right hooks and upper cuts were thrown back and forth between the candidates, but it seem the last one standing holding the victory was in fact the mediator, Candy Crawford. The town hall debate covered both domestic and foreign policy. The audience touched upon some very important topics from immigration, women’s equity, costs of gas, the military, they Libyan attack and gun rights and comparing Mitt...

How Candy Conquered America Research Paper

...I chose the beyond the line question, “Do you think that the change of candy over the years has impacted America in a positive or negative way?” In the book How candy conquered America by Lauren Tarshis, candy and sugar were very expensive in the early 1800s, so only the very wealthy could afford lots of sugar. But then, in the year 1847, Oliver Chase created an amazing invention. Oliver was a pharmacist in Boston, and he had been tinkering with his lozenge - making machine for four months. Lozenges were tablets filled with remedies or “cures” for sicknesses. They were very hard to make, because lozenges were very hard to make by hand. Finally, Chase’s lozenge-making machine worked, and Chase became very delighted, because now, he could make lozenges with the pull of a lever. But then, Oliver Chase encountered another idea-an idea that would change America forever! Why not use his machine to make only candy? As it turned out, it was a great idea, and Oliver’s candies, which he called “Chase Lozenges”, became a big hit, because now, everyone could afford candy, not just the wealthy people. Oliver Chase’s lozenge-making machine was a critical invention for the candy-making industry, not only because he could mass-produce candy, but...
