This paper defines leadership. This paper defines leadership from a perspective, my perspective. This paper defines leadership from the perspective of a master’s student, a jail manager, a correction professional, a mother, a wife, a leader, and a woman. This paper states a person cannot remove perspective, personality, gender, experiences, beliefs, or traits out of the equation when developing or administering the essential responsibilities of a leader. Just the same, a follower will have expectations of a leader based on those same factors. Leadership is defined based on each individual’s filters and each person’s filter is different.

The Definition of Leadership

Leadership is the act of guiding, molding, and moving an individual, a team, or an entire population. A leader provides guidance to a particular pathway, and has most likely chosen that pathway because of her experiences. A leader defines what shape a person or an organization will take on the future, and molds the organization based on what shapes have appealed to or been successful for her in the past. A leader moves, encourages, supports, and has vision for change, movement, and growth because of the growth they’ve already walked through. A leader is a product of their environment, experiences, culture, gender, education, traits, ethics, and beliefs and therefore as a result, the act of leadership is an implementation of the intrinsic likes and dislikes, observations, trials, and lessons from their life. And for some of us, standing at the front and pointing which direction we should be going, comes naturally.
A leader is simply a follower who takes their experience, skills, and ideas and applies them at a new level providing vision and direction. Greenleaf (2008) captures this idea when he writes, “the servant-leader is a servant first.” Most...

Montesi SOC 424 Leadership Defined Many people believe that you have to be in a position to advise or manage somebody to be a leader; some also believe that in order to be a leader you have to have accomplished a feat of some kind or been elected to office. However, my definition of a leader is different. ...myself and what my leadership style is, I have to choose servant leadership. As a believer when I hear the term servant, I usually usually associated it with the Bible. The term “servant” is defined as “a person working in the service of another.” When Robert Greenleaf first defined the phrase “Servant Leadership,” he pointed out that the difference between servant leadership and a leader was “a servant aspiring to serve and to take up leadership as result” (Greenleaf, n.d.) whereas a leader is defined as a person who rules or guides or inspires others. The servant leader’s main concern is to lead in a way that they are serving others by developing them as well as giving their undivided attention to their colleagues and those they serve (Spears, 1998). First Peter 4:10-11 suggests that everyone has the gift to be a servant and as good stewards it should be used to serve one another. One of the most interesting aspects that Greenleaf brings out is the wish to help others. In the servant leadership, leadership is secondary but the main focus is on the needs of others. This is one way to distinguish servant- leaders from all other leaders. Other servant leadership characteristics are: listening and understanding; acceptance and empathy; foresight; awareness and perception; persuasion; conceptualization; self-healing; and rebuilding community (Spears, 1998). Upon analysis of the data we can see that the directive and achievement oriented leadership styles, with a lack of focus on supportive or participative leadership employed by the managers at the branch in Dominica led to dissatisfaction amongst their employees. In contrast the employees of the Scotia Bank branch from the British Virgin Islands had a far more favorable outlook when it came to job satisfaction as a result of the employment of participative and supportive leadership styles in conjunction with the manager’s achievement oriented and directive styles.
