Interviewer: Crystal Hardy Interviewee: Cassandra Patterson, Vice President of Human Resources, Housing Authority City of Milwaukee (HACM).
Interview Setting: Interview conducted in office of Ms. Patterson, downtown corporate office. The interview was conducted at 3:30 PM on Wednesday afternoon.
Affiliation with interviewee: Ms. Patterson has been is my supervision and mentor.
Start of Interview
Interviewer: Please tell me about your history with HACM.

Interviewee: I am Vice of Human Resources (HR) for the Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee (HACM). I am of African-American decent and female by gender. I came up from the ranks and has elevated to the executive positions she now holds with HACM, a position she has held for the last seven years.
Interviewer: What are your responsibilities as a leader?

Interviewee: As the VP Human Resources I am responsible for directing all of the people functions of the Authority in accordance with the policies and practices of the Authority.
Interviewer: What is your Educational Background?

Interviewee: I possess a Bachelors of Arts and a MBA, with emphasis on strategic HR.
Interviewer: How did you get into your current position?
Interviewee: I started out twenty years ago as a Lieutenant in the US Army where I did HR work and got into the corporate arena and came up the ladder from HR Generalist, HR Manager to Director to VP.
Interviewer: Please tell me a little about HACM.
Interviewee: HACM has been a national leader in housing for over 60 years. HACM provides innovative affordable housing choices to over 10,000 Milwaukee families and works to assist them in achieving self-sufficiency through a wide range of economic, health and social services.
Interviewer: How would you describe the culture of HACM?

I first started school for engineering, and then after two years I found my passion was in nursing. So I started over at school, taking different types of classes as I pursued nursing, and three years later graduated with a nursing degree. Several different paths where traveled in nursing for me, meaning I tried many different departments and assignments. Then by accident I ended up as an RN case manager for mentally ill clients. Psych was never my intended path, but I loved it from the first day. I am now a Manager of a group of outpatient clinics for mentally ill clients and love it. I cannot see myself doing anything else now. How would you describe a leader? A good leader is only as good as the group you are leading is what I was always told. That does help, but there is a lot more that goes into it. I believe a quality leader should also be a good teacher. A leader needs to have the knowledge to pass on to those they lead. A good leader has to be able to listen as well. While those under me may look to me for answers, I have to realize that I may not always have that answer.
