The Social Change Model and Servant Leadership Theory: Comparisons and Contrasts

Introduction
Leadership is essential for all successful organizations. However, the form of leadership that is practiced by various leaders is vital in determining how the activities of the organization are managed. There are many different forms of leadership practiced in differing environments. Servant leadership and social change models are some of the most common leadership theories used in pursuit of organizational success. This paper will describe in detail the servant leadership and social change models and contrast their methods of leadership. Also I will seek to explain how they could be applied in the leadership role of any given organization.
Servant leadership
Robert K. Greenleaf introduced the concept of Servant Leadership in his book “Servant Leadership: A Journey into the Nature of Legitimate Power and Greatness”. In the description of servant leadership, Greenleaf describes servant leadership as: a natural feeling where the leader feels that they should serve the people first (Greenleaf, 2002) . Greenleaf describes a servant leader as a leader who puts the needs of his or her people first before other personal needs associated with the role. A servant leader will strive to ensure that they prioritize other people’s needs first and ensure that their welfare is paramount. According to Greenleaf,
The difference manifests itself in the care taken by the servant-first to make sure that other people's highest priority needs are being served. The best test and difficult to administer, is: Do those served grow as persons? Do they, while being served, become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, more likely themselves to become servants? And, what is the effect on the least privileged in society? Will they benefit or at least not be further deprived. (Greenleaf,...

Leadership Model Paper

...Leadership Model Paper Introduction Company A has been no stranger to the economic downturn these last ten years. As most of you know, we have seen shrinking profit margins, a shortening supply of material, growing operational costs as equipment ages to maturity, and increased transportation costs as fuel prices soar. Also, the last three years have brought significant amounts of competition to our area, where we were once the dominant player. Through all of this, Company A has persisted, and continues to work hard to provide excellent service to our customers, provide competitive pricing, work closely with suppliers, and provide the best working environment possible for our employees. However, though we have persisted, we have not done so profitably. The time has come for Company A to make some significant changes structurally. Surely everyone has heard rumors of downsizing, and unfortunately, those rumors are true. We have explored every avenue up to this point, but we cannot delay any further. The following letter describes the upcoming restructuring plan, including operational and managerial expectations. It saddens me that we were unable to find a better solution than downsizing, but it is my hope that our organization will pull through this obstacle with the same persistence and grace that it has hurtled them before. Responsible Restructure Unfortunately, throughout the last decade, Company A has seen a continuous fall in profit margins and ROA. This being said,......

Communicating Your Insights on Discovery and Delivery Skills

...Abstract This paper outlines a concept for understanding innovation and explains how to lead innovation in an organization. This paper examines and describes how leadership models support innovation in organizations. This paper also addresses the role of discovery and delivery skills for their support of innovation in organizations. Lastly, in this paper I will explore my own strengths and weaknesses in the discovery and delivery skills and speak about how they help or hinder my ability to support innovation in organizations. Models That Support Innovation in Organizations Each of the different leadership models support innovation within organizations in some form or fashion. In order to grasp how, one must first develop an understanding of innovation and leadership. Innovation has many meanings, but on a broad scale one can say that innovation is thinking outside the box. Leadership is a bit harder to describe because it is best understood when seen. To put leadership in words according to Doyle and Smith, leaders often become visible when an innovative response is needed (2001). Now that we have an idea of what these words mean one of the leadership models that support innovations in organizations is transformation leadership. Transformational leaders serve as a role model by gaining the trust and confidence of peers and employees. By stating future goals, developing plans to achieve these goals and displaying an innovative edge, transformational......

The Impact of Leadership Styles on Quality Management in Health Care

...The Impact of leadership Styles on Quality Management in Health care Effective and strong leadership is one of, if not the most important and critical component for any organization’s success, particularly in health care facilities. Leadership also plays a major role in enhancing an organization’s competitiveness as confirmed by various academics (Rowe, 2001; Riaz & Haider, 2010). Many argue and suggest that there is a connection between an organization’s leadership style and its ability to implement and manage quality initiatives. That being said, researchers still encounter difficulties when assessing the effect of leadership styles on healthcare quality management, as most of the available theories were developed outside of healthcare setting. This paper aims to present an evaluation and a review of published scholarly articles discussing three styles of leadership and their association with quality management initiatives. The three leadership styles chosen for this evaluation are: Transformational leadership, servant leadership, and situational leadership. The paper will also describe my current leadership style, then compare it to the transformational model, and finally outline the changes I need to implement in order to incorporate its key characteristics into my own style. ...environment (Byham, Smith & Paese 2002). The purpose of this paper is to create my own personal development plan based on the Central Michigan University (CMU) leadership competency model, leadership theories and personality tests. This will serve as a framework to allow me to identify my own weaknesses and strengths, and develop my leadership capacity, allowing myself to be able to achieve the vision I set for myself and the current business environment. The vision I had for myself is to enter the Marketing Industry, focusing on business development, and ultimately becoming an entrepreneur. Business development has been said to be a synthesis of strategic analysis, marketing and sales (The Editor, 2012). The competencies required are ‘strong research skills’, to evaluate the business environment, ‘people and communication skills’, to build partnership and rapport with other organization and with a ‘deal closing instinct’, to ensure closing of sales (The Editor, 2012). This leadership development plan will be helping me in preparing to be a future business development director or an entrepreneur at the end of my career. Lastly, I would seek a Major of the Singapore Armed Forces, who has seen me in a leadership role, to provide feedback on my personal leadership development plan.
