Xerox is a provider of business processing and document management. Its mission is to become change agents and innovators to meet customer’s challenges. The company creates business processing outsourcing, information technology solutions, new technologies, products and services for world class commercial and government clients. Xerox designs, develops and delivers information technology solutions that utilize data centers, help storage desks, and managed facilities (Mergent Online, 2014). To be successful in this industry the company requires a powerful, dedicated, and committed Chief Executive Officer. In 2009 they promoted from within the company and capitalized on Ursula Burns’ abilities.
Chief Executive Officer

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Xerox is Ursula Burns; she has catapulted through the company since 1980. Ursula was born in New York City New York in 1958; she received a bachelors of science in mechanical engineering from the Polytechnic Institute of NYU and a master’s of science degree in mechanical engineering from Columbia University (Burns, 2014). Ms. Burns joined Xerox as a summer intern in 1980 working her way up through the company and securing key leadership positions along the way. Ursula became the CEO of Xerox in July 2009 and soon after made the largest acquisition in Xerox history with the purchase of a computer services company. This acquisition propelled the company and extended its reach into diverse areas of business processing and information technology outsourcing. Ursula Burns is the first woman to succeed another woman and the first African American woman to be the CEO of a fortune 500 company. She sits on the board of directors for not only Xerox, but also American Express and Exxon Mobil Corporations.
Leadership style and Philosophy

Ms. Burns leads a workforce of more than 140,000 employees and serves clients in over 180 companies. Her leadership style and philosophy are grounded in six powerful leadership lessons (Gaille, 2013). The first is successful straightforward communication; being honest with what is happening or projected to happen in the company. The second is empower culture and diversity; this will help you succeed. The third lesson piggy backs on the first. Inform your employees of the company vision; let them know what they are in for. The fourth is crucial; power of the people. A company can do just about anything when they are all working united for a common goal and objective. The fifth lesson is to think about the customer; make them the center. Finally the sixth is leadership is essential and must be consistent, straightforward, and powerful. Ursula works to bring the right people into the organization for the right job; creating forceful teams with good strategy and empowering them with the ability to communicate. While accomplishing your leadership role you must remain true to yourself and feel natural. She believes that to succeed you must do something you love. Ursula’s leadership traits revolve around being authentic, stand for what you believe in, listen to others, measure your goals/outcomes and finally know you are not in this alone and can’t do it by yourself. Xerox has a strong culture of family and cohesiveness; they are real people working with each other, a team based company (Hymowitz, 2013). This company’s culture allows for possibilities; hard to do is not out of the realm of possible.
CEO’s Personal and Organizational Values

Organizational leaders set the tone for the culture of the company (Schermerhorn, Osborn, Uhl-Bien, & Hunt, 2012). CEO’s of the company are a huge part of the company’s tone. The CEO’s values transcend into the company and should be aligned. The CEO of Xerox Ursula Burns personal and organizational values stems from her background and her ability to succeed in adverse conditions. She believes core values are the backbone of what we are and what we do. Personal values are developed by your environment and influences. Ms. Burns’ personal values revolved around cohesiveness, doing good things, hard work, and honesty. Ursula wants Xerox employees to feel like family and be a crucial part of the company. Her core values of work hard, strive for quality and excellence, be dedicated and committed are also some of the core values of the company. Having a connection with the company’s core values allows for employees to understand their responsibilities. All of those who work at Xerox share many values; a deep belief in education can transform lives and companies, a passion for diversity in all forms, and technology is the link to the future.
CEO Influence on Ethical Behavior

Every CEO’s values have the potential to influence the ethical behavior of the organization (Kurtz, 2012). Ms. Burns is no exception. Her leadership style is one of ethics and integrity; she is a role model for corporate ethical behavior. She has a strong since of loyalty, dedication, and commitment. Early on she learned an education can propel you to great things; but it requires work and commitment (Hymowitz, Ursula Burnes CEO Xerox, 2013). This commitment enabled by personal actions and accountability to herself, this sets the standard for the organization. Ursula leads by example; her reputation rests on what she has done and how she acts every day. A company’s core values are part of its heritage and it defines them as a company. Xerox has a strong set of company core values which were build on dedication, commitment, compliance, and maintaining personal integrity. Ms. Burns sets the ethical expectations of the organization and challenges the employees to meet or exceed them. The company’s code of conduct guides co-workers, employees, and managers to do the right thing every day.
CEO’s Strengths and Weaknesses

Three of Ms. Burns leadership strengths are determination, helping others, and commitment. Ursula’s determination to succeed in business not to mention life has made her one of a kind. She has worked her way up from a summer intern to CEO of a multi-million dollar company. Not to mention she sits on more than one company’s board of directors. Helping others is also core strength for Ms. Burns she is dedicated to helping employees grown not only professionally but also personally. She believes in growing people within the company; enabling them to become managers and increase their roles in the company. Finally, Ursula’s third strength is her commitment to the company. She is willing to take risks and grow the company outside the box. She balances organizational commitment and customer commitment to capitalize on both at the right time and place. Those three strengths have helped Ursula with continued success at Xerox. Although with every strength there are weaknesses. A weakness has the ability to be fixed and turned around to a strength. For Ms. Burns her three weaknesses could be stagnation, impatient, and manipulation. She has not experienced another company and only knows Xerox. Although this shows dedication and commitment it also limits her breath of experience outside of Xerox. Ms. Burns feels she is impatient; she wants it done and does not like to wait (Xerox Corporation, 2009). The third and final weakness could be manipulation; since she has been with the company for so long and has grown up through the ranks she has the ability to manipulate others to do her bidding instead of listening and getting buy in on business opportunities.
Successful Quality

Ursula Burns is the epitome of fearlessness; she goes into a situation with an open mind and the attitude that anything is possible. This quality in Ursula has served her well, from growing up in less than ideal conditions to persevering in a dominantly male executive role. She has worked hard to get an education and capitalize on the benefits it afforded her. She is dedicated to achieving success and greatness and work with commitment to see it through. She is a risk taker, her risks in acquisition has allowed the company to expand into new realms. She was one of the instrumental pieces to the puzzle in turning a company struggling with financial difficulties around into a company that is now a leader in its industry. She has accomplished many things throughout her career and this could not have been done without fearlessness. She is a smart and unconventional thinker who embraces new ideas.
Communication, Collaboration, Power and Politics

Groups are made up of individuals from all walks of life coming together to focus on a common goal or initiative. Organizations that encourage group collaboration and open communication are more effective in achieving a common goal. Groups within an organization can have a multitude of influence on the organization. They have the ability to enhance or cripple the organizations cohesiveness. This can be done simply by the lack of communication. Lack of communication creates situations where errors are more likely to occur and efforts can be halted. Collaboration within the company allows the group to capitalize on subject matter experts throughout the company. This collaboration allows the group to achieve success in reaching the goal or instituting the initiative. Collaboration within the group creates the buy-in factor and empowers the group to attain victory. Power is the ability of the group to influence others within the organization. It allows them to move their objective forward and complete the task. As for politics in an organization this can help or hinder a group dynamic. Organizational politics seems to involve using the ends to justify the means (Schermerhorn, Osborn, Uhl-Bien, & Hunt, 2012). It is important to understand the importance of politics in the workplace and adopt a perspective that allows for broaden views and understanding initiatives. Politics can be utilized as an art of creative compromise among competing interest and can be instrumental in accomplishing the tasks. It acknowledges the interests of individual stakeholders within the group and facilitates a compromise.
Xerox has a tremendous asset in Ursula Burns as CEO for the company. She is dedicated, determined, committed and fearless. She brings diversity and empowerment to the company. The company’s foresight in promoting within has been a stupendous move that has set them up for success in the information technology industry.
