An individual’s personality and upbringing plays a major part in their leadership style and abilities. There are some people who are natural born leaders and usually make some of the best leaders and managers in business as well as the military. However, there are other people who are not born a natural lead, but learn to develop their leadership skills as they grow over time and they develop into good leaders and managers. Then there are people who just never develop into a good leader and make very poor managers.
Kurt Lewin (1939) set out to identify different styles of leadership. While later research has identified more specific types of leadership, this early study was very influential and established three major leadership styles which are authoritarian, participative and delegative. Other more specific types of leadership include autocratic leadership, bureaucratic leadership, charismatic leadership, democratic leadership, laissez-faire leadership, people-oriented leadership, servant leadership, task-oriented leadership, transactional leadership, and transformational leadership.
Throughout my live, mainly while I was in the military, I have encountered those that are natural born leaders, those that developed their skills over time and unfortunately those that are just bad leaders. I have also encountered different types of leadership styles and have leaned and developed my leadership style from these encounter. I do not believe that I was a natural born leader, however, from childhood I have always had a dominate personality and have been a leader. The leadership style that I have developed for myself over the years is dominantly a participative leadership style.
