School Improvement Team: School Motivation

One of the largest problems I see today is the lack of student motivation in elementary school students. We are constantly trying to find innovative ways to connect the school environment to their real world. “It takes a village to raise a child” so every stakeholder involved with the school should make a conscious and consistent effort to do their part.
The team I chose above consists of the principal who is the leader of the school. He/she is the tone setter. The school climate is often created by the principal. They can heighten or dampen the moral of a school which in turn affects the motivation of the teachers. Teachers know they have a job to do and most of us love to do it no matter what type of principal we have. However, I believe that if the principal doesn’t motivate or challenge teachers, then the teachers will not motivate and challenge students.
Next, I would include the assistant principal, followed by a teacher from each grade level and the counselor. I would prefer the teacher representative to be the team leader or grade chair since this person was chosen by their peers and administrator to lead the team. Also on the team, I chose to select a fine arts or special teacher (Physical Education, Art, Music, and Computer). Even though these teachers do not actually give standardized test, they can assist in analyzing data. They also can be beneficial in coming up with creative or different lessons that could be used to increase student motivation. These teachers often have a unique rapport with students that can be extremely helpful with this problem. The counselor is often in constant contact with the community so that role is also crucial. He/she could assist with helping the parents and other non staff members understand benchmark and other assessment data. Counselors will also be helpful in creating afterschool activities to for the community i.e. Family Math Night or Family Fit Night.
The counselor’s job is a very tedious job as counselors wear many hats. Counselors as well as the PTA are a liaison between the community and the school and thus are the most important stakeholders in this situation. Since our concern is to involve to motivate, I am seeking the skills afforded the counselor to be a pillar to our students and thus increase growth in our areas of need. Our PTA is composed of parents and teachers. This team is instrumental in the ongoing success of our students. They are the “connection”, the “meat” of the team. This is where the ideas are born, as well as where we hash things out that are not working and introduce as well as execute systems that do work to motivate our students.
Our parents are a vital asset in the effort to increase student motivation. As we see the student for eight hours out of the day, it is imperative that our parents follow through at home. I have found that parent workshops have been a great help in getting our parents to understand our expectations as well as buy in so that the parent and teachers (school) is on the same page, thus creating the “village”.
Last but surely not least, our students are the glue that holds us all together. Without them we have no mission. Students can motivate themselves as well as their peers, not to mention their teacher and parents alike. Our goal is to motivate and enhance. Once we reach our students and they begin to motivate themselves as well as their peers, motivation will be contagious on our campus and our scores will reflect that. Positive breeds positive and I believe the team that I have assembled for my school improvement plan will get this job done with pride, consistency and results.
What we do today at our schools to motivate children, will last a lifetime. If we keep this in mind our students will flourish and obtain heights known to no man. This is my true and sincere belief. There is no doubt that these stakeholders combined in this combination cannot make a difference in student motivation in order to increase student achievement.
