After the war, John pursued journalism, but soon after entered politics, serving the US House of Representatives (1947 – 1953) and the Senate (1953 – 1961). The most significant events in Kennedy's life were soon to follow. After making his mark in the political field, Kennedy announced his intent to run for presidency. Leadership and Organization

...“Leadership is a journey of discovery. It is the expression of a person at his or her best whose aim is to transform something for the better and to develop this potential in others. It is not a solitary pursuit but one that harnesses the energy of those around you” (Owen, 2002). Managing the organizational changes and improvements is considered to be one of the most complex tasks of leadership. Evolution of new ways of communication, organization tasks, and management of people has become an ongoing process of strategies and planning. As the organizational dynamics of a business change with the conditions of the marketplace, so do the lives of the leaders and the managers that run them. As leaders eagerly strive to develop new organizational structures with a shared vision of emphasis it focuses on the company’s objectives and mission. The more idealized or utopian the goal advocated by the leader, the more discrepant it is relevant to the status quo. And, the greater, the discrepancy of the goal from the status quo, the more likely followers will attribute extraordinary vision to the leader. By presenting an idealized goal to the followers, a leader provides a challenge and a motivating force for change. (Conger & Kanungo, 1987). Effective managers of change understand that unless people are changed, change will not happen. The more people trust the leader, the more willing they are to accept the changes that are set in place. The attainable objectives and mission...

...Alan Mulally is in my face - again. In fact, he has barely left it for the past two hours. He has taken me through the thick loose-leaf binder he assembled for my interview and shown me another five binders filled with interviews he did upon taking the CEO job at Ford, along with research material and personal notes. He has given me his opinion on all the stories I've written about Ford (F, Fortune 500) since he took over and, for good measure, the stories I wrote about Boeing back when he worked there. The man is relentless and demands all my attention. He won't let up until he has turned all my "nos" and "maybes" into "yeses." Call it the Mulally method: this good-natured but relentless insistence on following what he has determined to be the correct course of action. My immersion is taking place around a conference table in his office on the 12th floor of Ford Motor Co.'s world headquarters in Dearborn, Mich. 0:00 /2:44Ford chief: Plan's working Mulally is sitting so close, he could be in my lap. The office decoration is sparse, but Mulally likes the 180-degree view; Ford's historic River Rouge complex is visible on the horizon, and he says he can keep an eye on General Motors (GM, Fortune 500) and Chrysler from here too. Not that Mulally has much time for window gazing. He's on a crusade to save Ford Motor. Now he's showing me the corporate mission statement he wrote and had printed on plastic cards and distributed to employees. And here is the hand-drawn...

Leaders and Leadership in Organizations

...successful organization is defined by a strong leader.  Regardless of the type, size, or financial performance, the foundation of the organization still lies in the hands of a leader.  The success or failure of an organization is often linked to the leadership style and ability of the leader.  There is no “one size fits all” leadership style and it is essential that each leader develop his or her own style to successfully lead the organization.  There has also been a link found between the personality of an individual and their leadership capabilities as it relates to the overall leadership style of the formal or informal leader.  “Leadership style is the manner and approach of providing direction, implementing plans, and motivating people.” (Clark, 2013)  In order to provide direction and implement plans, the four decision making styles that have been identified are autocratic, consultative, group, and delegated.  These four styles have been derived from the Vroom and Yetton Model. Leaders of an organization are not limited to those individuals who hold a managerial or official title or those who are highest on the hierarchy of an organization. “While too often we can find powerful people who do not hold genuine positions of authority, we frequently find people who are in a position of authority, but are powerless to influence the behavior of others.” (Goncalves, 2013)  Formal leaders are those who have been given or have earned their place at the top of the organization such as...

Effective leadership casts vision, provides direction, and influences organizational behavior, good or bad. Leadership academic studies agree leaders possess common qualities and attributes. Leadership styles may differ, but qualities and attributes remain consistent. The role of a leader is critical to the evolving dynamics of an organizational structure. Organizations are more aware of the role leadership has in their organization and are seeking leaders with the style, qualities and attributes needed (Yukl & Lepsinger 2008). An organizations understanding of leadership is often limited to assessing a leader’s ability to motivate others to go beyond what is expected, benefiting from subordinates full potential efforts. Leadership in Global Organizations

...Jing Wu jingwu@callutheran.edu LEADERSHIP IN GLOBAL ORGANIZATIONS INTRODUCTION In Apple’s offices, where are located at Cupertino, California, IT engineers finished the design of the new iPhone. Then the project would be sent to several Japanese companies and ordered sophisticated core components, such as sensors, blue modules, and chips, for the new product. At the same time, depending on the new design, Apple’s partner at Korea also started producing components of screen and battery. After that, these components from Japan and Korea would come to the South of China. At there, each IPhone would be assembled and leave the factory, and then transported around the world. The production of iPhone will be a good example showing how the global progress connects people from all around the world. Indeed, “Globalization” is closely connected with our life, and it has changed our world from economic layout to personal life. Just like the case of IPhone, by globalization, companies can collaborate with each other and effectively organize the resource, so that the advantages can be maximized and costs can be reduced. Moreover, globalization also means more extensive market. Nowadays, we can enjoy hamburgers of McDonald’s no matter in which country we are; people also can easily find imported goods everywhere. Expanding business into foreign market has become a trend for more companies. However, global progress also brings some big challenges for us. With the collaboration of economics...

Ethical Leadership in Organizations

...Ethical Leadership in Organizations Lisa Hunsucker MGT 380 April 19,2010 Leadership is by all means a special talent that not all people possess. A leader must also have ethics to be effective for the long term in the corporate world. These leaders generally implement ethical programs in order to influence an organizations climate (Yukl, 2010). I will evaluate the importance of ethical leadership and the role it plays into today’s organizations. In addition, I will discuss the repercussions a company may have when its leadership allows and even rewards unethical business practices. Lastly, I will apply my personal leadership perspective. My perspective will include the path-goal theory and ethical practices that I find important to leadership in an organization. Ethical Leadership In the midst of making money in a business, when do ethics come into play? In any organization an effective leader must have people that will follow him or her. Generally speaking people will follow someone that is ethical and moral over a leader that is dishonest and immoral. This is just my observation through years of working. I know for me and many others the leaders I have followed, they were highly ethical in their business practices. The most effective leaders were those who empowered their employees to follow the same model of integrity. Velasquez (2006) states “when employees believe an organization is just, they are more willing to follow the organization’s managers, do what managers...

Leadership Within an Organization

...------------------------------------------------- Leadership LDR1203 20347 March 16, 2014 March 16, 2014 Thesis Statement: The purpose of this paper is to identify the types of leadership that managers use at the manufacturing company where I am employed to determine whether managers effectively motivate their employees to attain the goals of the organization. According to the famous quote by General Dwight Eisenhower “leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it.” According to Merriam-Webster (2014), motivation is defined as “the act or process of giving someone a reason for doing something: the act or process of motivating someone” while leadership is defined as “the power or ability to lead other people.” According to Whetten and Cameron (2011), an effective leader must promote employee interaction in the work place in order to maintain a productive and successful business environment among the employees and to create employee motivation and incentives that lead to increased productivity. The challenge for any leader is to recognize what skills they must use to positively influence the behaviors of their employees in order to maximize their performance. Over the past two months, I have observed and analyzed the behaviors of three supervisors to observe how they perform their daily jobs and how they interact with their employees at work. This paper will focus on their managerial...

Leadership in Organizations Paper

...Leadership is the ability to influence a group toward the achievement of a vision or set of goals. We need leaders today to challenge the status quo, create visions of the future, and inspire organizational members to want to achieve the visions. We also need managers to formulate detailed plans, create efficient organizational structures, and oversee day-to-day operations. There are different styles of leadership and they impact group communication differently. The participative leadership style ranks among the best leadership style that promotes group communications. Participative leaders facilitate sharing of information and ideas and the leader considers all inputs from the group members before making a decision. Another leadership style that promotes group communication includes transformational leadership style. The success of transformational leaders depends on creating a shared vision between the individual and the organization through the effective communication of the organizational vision and ways to achieve the vision. Other leaders such as coaching leaders who hold long conversations with employees to make them realize their strengths and weaknesses, promote a centralized communication style where the team members communicate more with the leader rather than among team members. Charismatic leadership tries to impress team members and enlist their devotion for the leader. This leadership style encourages communication that reinforces or promotes the leader’s...

Leadership and Organization Goals

...Leadership and Organizational Smart Goals “Every nurse has the opportunity to make a positive impact on the profession through day-to-day advocacy for nurses and the nursing profession” (Tomajan, 2012, abstract). Nurses have the power to make a difference in their work organization by making positive changes. Changing the staffing matrix to staffing based on acuity and reducing the unit department’s acquired pressure ulcers will greatly contribute to patient safety and patient/nurse satisfaction. Goal 1: Leadership Development A major problem of the health care system today is the heavy workload of the hospital nurses. Nurses are experiencing job dissatisfaction and burnout due to three main reasons: increased patient acuity, inadequate nursing staff, and higher workload. Staffing by patient acuity is safer for patients. It decreases the heavy patient workload and eliminate overtime. It will also increase the nurse’s job satisfaction and create better patient outcome. The article “Safe Staffing Saves Lives” mentions, “insufficient nurse staffing has been linked with poor patient outcomes, longer hospital stays and increased risk of patient mortality” (2011, p. 16, para. 2). The article summarized how the American Nurses Association (ANA) introduced the formal legislation that required “hospitals that participate in Medicare to form committees that compromised of at least 55% direct care nurses” (“Safe Staffing Saves Lives,” 2011, p. 16, para. 2). Now the ANA has proposed...
