Changing My Habits
For my last chefs choice I would like to write about how this class has influenced my eating habits. I have been mostly been influenced by the movies that we have watched because they talked about problems of today’s culture and how it could lead us to have health problems in the future. The last movie that we watched Forks over Knives really made an impact on me. As an athlete I thought that eating a lot of meat and drinking milk would make me healthy and strong when in fact we humans don’t really need that much meat in our diet because we can get protein from other substances. Seeing how the UFC fighter ate and still was able to keep up his intense workout routines showed me that it could be done. Eating too much meat and dairy can cause cholesterol to build up in your blood stream. This makes you more prone for heart attacks.
Usually when I ate breakfast earlier in the year I would go to the hot line and get whatever they had, not caring how much meat or proceed food was served. These foods had a lot of sugar that would give me initial energy but as the day went on I found myself lacking energy. So I started to eat oatmeal for breakfast and things started to change. Sense my new breakfast diet was working I decided to go ahead to change my lunch and dinner diets as well. I started to eat salads with every meal and instead of drinking chocolate milk I started drinking water. I also cut out a lot of the meat that was unneeded. Within a couple days I felt a big change in the way I was feeling. I felt like I paid better attention during class and while studying after. I even found the energy to go to the gym in between classes instead of going after, saving me time and making my life easier. The only area of my day where I can’t seem to find the energy is early afternoon. Maybe I

...Big Brother is fictional character and symbol in the novel 1984. In this society, every citizen is under surveillance by “Big  Brother”. Mainly in the telescreens, except the Proles. Winston’s change to a reformed party member from  rebel is done in three parts, “learning, acceptance, and understanding.     The learning process Winston goes through symbolizes the beatings and degradation he went through, he gets accused of many crimes that he did not actually commit. They accused him of the crimes mainly “to humiliate him and destroy his power of arguing and reasoning.” It does work; he admits to the crimes, because he had lost the will to fight anymore, because he was scared of the punishment that could come from denying them. Winston began...

Summary: The Rise Of ADHD

...To summarize his Ted talk is so: modern, or the “past” education needs to be reformed. Given that, modern education plays, to deductive reasoning, like learning facts, and excludes divergent, novel thinking. Further, modern education has be “industrialized” by standardized testing, and this form of education is simply to boring in a over stimulating world; and thus, the rise of ADHD, has risen with the introduction to standardized testing. Some of the assumptions made by the thinker was that rise of ADHD, has risen with the introduction to standardized testing, divergent thinking as been minimized in recent education systems, and that modern education is not a natural learning environment, and must be reformed. In all of this, the rise of ADHD increases as one would travel east, and to more industrial cities, and urban areas, like D.C. Also, people have a tendency to learn better in groups....

Florence Nightengale

...environment, and humankind are remarkable and still true to this day. Nightingale reformed nursing and changed the way nursing was viewed. Some of the issues during Nightingale's time, the 1800's, we still face today. Nightingale not only impacted nursing in the 1800's, but also still has an effect on nursing today. We do not need a new role model and icon for nursing because Nightingale changed the nursing profession for the better and that should never be forgotten. Nightingale was born on May 12, 1820 in Florence, Italy; thereby being named after the city where she was born. Her family was from England, and lived during the Victorian era. While touring Europe on their two-year long honeymoon, Nightingale was born. Her parents William Edward Nightingale and Frances Smith Nightingale were a very wealthy couple. Nightingale had a sister named Parthenope who was about a year older (Davis, 1999). William Nightingale was well educated, at Cambridge University in England and he taught his daughters at home. William Nightingale taught his daughters to speak Italian, Latin, and, Greek. He also taught them history, philosophy, and math; math was one of Florence's favorite subjects to study (Audian, 1999). Florence's father gave her the education equivalent to an upper class boy during her era. Parthenope rejected her education and joined her mother in domestic activities, whereas Florence loved learning. William Nightingale was Florence's main companion; Florence found the life...

Affirmative Action

...Affirmative Action Affirmative action is a government policy that gives opportunities to minorities, women, and any group who has been the victim of discrimination in the past. Affirmative action is the outcome of the 1960’s Civil Rights movement, growing out of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which outlawed discrimination based on race, ethnicity, or gender. It was the 1978 Supreme Court decision, The Regents of the University of California v. Bakke, which allowed for the use of race-based preferences as a means of fostering diversity, allowing affirmative action to be used in admissions policies. It was created with the intention to provide equal opportunities for members of minority groups in education and employment. Initially affirmative action focused on improving opportunities for African Americans. Colleges and universities used Affirmative action in their admission process, with the hopes of increasing their enrollment of African Americans and later Hispanic students, two minorities that were falling behind in college acceptance rates. According to data from the National Center on Education Statistics (NCES), in 2007, 70 percent of white high school graduates immediately enrolled in college, compared to 56 percent of African American graduates and 61 percent of Hispanic graduates. As more and more educational institutions began using affirmative action policies in their admissions process, it became a target of great debate. With Americans taking sides as affirmative...

My Values

...The development of personal values is a life long process that affects all areas of life. Personal values develop through experience and learning. They are formed and reformed through time and they impact our personal lives as well as our professional lives. Development of personal values is essential in learning, and understanding personal values is important. This essay will describe my personal values and how they have been developed. Our values define who we are. They are the fundamental beliefs of our global organization. They guide our actions and behavior. They influence the way we work with each other – and the way we serve our clients and engage with our communities.Every day, each one of us makes choices and decisions that directly affect the way we experience each other and the way our clients and wider communities experience us. Our values give us confidence that we are using the same principles to help us make these decisions throughout our global organization. As human beings, we all must make assumptions based on past experience. Making judgments about others isn't wrong, it is necessary to our survival. If, as a child, the first dog you ever saw bit you, you would naturally fear dogs, even if every dog you met after that was friendly and affectionate. Likewise, in our first meeting with any stranger, our minds apply past experience to make a decision as to the level of current danger. The first thing the mind brings up is past bad experience, which generates...

The Growth of Hearing Impairments in Zambia

...Achievement of universal primary education (UPE) is one of the key Education For all (EFA) goals and Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to be realized by countries including Zambia by 2015. To realize universal primary education, the government of Zambia declared free basic education in 2002 which has seen an increase in enrolment across the country. It also carried out reforms that included introducing basic schools. In addition, the advent and mushrooming of schools is seen as a welcome development for ensuring access, equity and quality of basic education in Zambia. According to Brendan Carmoday, schools started operating in Zambia to respond to the needs of orphans, the poor and girl children who are often disadvantaged in the delivery of basic education services. In this regard, the government, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and other stakeholders are encouraged to support schools so that they serve more disadvantaged groups in the society. A research question, which is more specific and focused than a general topic, is the question that you will answer in your paper. For example, if your general area of interest is Social Security, a potential research question might ask, “How might low-income families save more money under a reformed Social Security plan that includes personal retirement accounts?” As you develop a research question, keep in mind that you will research sources with both supporting and differing viewpoints. Protecting Society: One Shot at a Time

...Katie Kostorowski Mrs. Stroup Honors Language Arts 14 March 2015 Protecting Society: One Shot at a Time Measles, a disease that once was thought to be practically extinct in America, is unfortunately again on the rise. In the year 2000, national leaders in the United States declared that measles had been eliminated within the country, however, from January 1, 2014 to August 29, 2014, there were 592 Measles cases in the United States (Koplowitz 1). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have attributed these cases to parents refusing to have their children vaccinated. Within the past two months, there have been 102 cases of measles reported in 14 states (Grady 1). Vaccinations have proven to be extremely effective. After receiving two doses of the measles vaccination, 97% of people are immune to this disease (“For Health Care Professionals” 2). It is completely unacceptable to have an outbreak of a disease that is almost completely preventable and was eliminated from the United States 15 years ago. In order to protect citizens against communicable diseases, it should be mandatory for almost everyone to receive vaccinations. There are two types of immunizations: active and passive. The more common of the two is the active immunization, which stimulates the body’s immune system to fabricate a defense against a disease-causing microorganism (“Immunization” 1). The first recorded active immunization was Edward Jenner’s use of the cowpox virus to produce immunity...

Divorce

...and hesitation about marriage is also increasing. The society accepts divorce very easily and even suggests it as a solution to the trivial problems faced in a husband-wife relationship. Therefore marriages and family life are at risk. If divorce continues to rise in even roughly the same pattern, the traditional sense of marriage might as well become extinct. To add to the existing problem, various law firms and websites provoke divorce through various methods such as advertising the benefits of divorce or by offering customized divorce forms online. The soaring divorces are not just questioning the importance of relationships and ties but they are also creating severe after effects in the life and family of the divorcees. Laws should be reformed to make it harder to obtain a divorce because it would help prevent any emotional, financial, and psychological repercussions. Though divorce at an individual level is a liberating factor for estranged couples, the problem arises when the divorce affects the kids. The author states: “Numerous studies indicate that children of divorced families face increased risk of substance abuse and academic trouble” (Acquilano 67). Parents are risking their kid’s well being because they believe it is not working out. Children are then forced to live with one parent while the other parent gets only visitation rights. The family becomes lopsided. The single parent has to juggle both job as well as domestic duties, and is unable to give the kind of...

Also here we see that in our education system we face a lot of public and private universities which is a good thing but they should improve a lot the way they disseminate knowledge. Because from all of these universities we can count only two or three which are really universities and have the characteristics that a university should have. I have personally experienced two types of education system the American one and our system here in Albania. I went for junior year in San Diego in Mission Hills High School and when I firstly started school I faced the differences of the way of teaching and also the way of learning. In United States they do not teach students thirteen subjects in a semester and year by year they teach them less subjects but in more details. That is the way they teach young children and also the way they teach university’s students. While here in Albania they start from the first grade to give pupils a lot of stuff and...

Relgion

...In the 1800’s there wasn’t any prisons for woman all prisoners were housed together in one prison. In today’s world Women, Men, and Juveniles are all housed in separate facilities, and the reason being the woman would end up being raped by the male inmates and the juveniles would get beat up every day and also be taken advantage of. (U.S. History) In the early centuries they had 3 main arguments that helped get juveniles separated from adult prisoners. One was that the penitentiary was too hard for the youth, Juveniles would end up learning more bad habits from the older criminals, and that they believed that juveniles could be reformed if they were in institutions that were designed for them. If they was not separated the older criminals would take advantage of the juveniles and teach them things that would end up bringing them back to prison after they were released. They could have raped them, made them do whatever they asked them to do and if they didn’t they would have beaten them up. Prison labor the mad the inmates make things to sell to the public to make money. With having two different types of prison where one you sat in your cell all day they would let you make crafts in your cell to sell. The other type of prison is where they didn’t have confinement away from inmates and they made broom, blacksmith, cane- seating chairs. Philosophy of Education

...philosophy towards literacy—both in terms of reading and writing as well as in terms of a new understanding and thinking for the digital age. As a language arts and publications teacher, I see that content specific knowledge of literature or newspaper procedures is a secondary concern when considering the larger issues of literacy. If a student can learn the tools for interpreting texts, writing essays, and creatively solving problems into their own daily lives, then I feel that my teaching served its purpose. Students also need to learn how to successfully integrate technology into their learning. To teach a student just my subject matter is not enough for them to survive. I need to teach them new ways to interpret and understand the world that they live in and will soon be creating. Working with students only matters if you can maintain a classroom community conducive to learning. Working with students is the primary aim of the teacher’s career. While that seems like an obvious statement, it is more than just working with students on a day to day basis that will make a good teacher. A good...
