Learning from History
A Retrospective Journey on Shahid and Connie Watson and the Life Skills Academy

It is a truth universally acknowledged that social action creates stronger platforms for people to succeed and communities to develop more opportunities for improvement and involvement. Along with that universal truth, we must also acknowledge the fact that most of this change, most of these platforms, most of these improvements were started and spearheaded by the unspoken heroes and leaders of this world. Considering their 2.5% recidivism rate and their success in guiding people out of institutionalized and community-fenced prison systems, it is safe to say that Shahid and Connie Watson are two of the world’s greatest unspoken heroes.

Shahid Watson is a native of Newark, New Jersey. Being one of five children, with parents and siblings who were involved in mainly drugs and violence, he had his sights set on getting out of his environment to create a better life for himself. After being homeless as a result of his familial situation, he graduated form high school in the top 10% of his class and was accepted into Rutgers University where he studied Business Administration (Watson, Shahid). As a result of the gang violence, drug abuse, incrimination, and the cycle of children being born into all of these categories, the Life Skills Academy was established in 1994.

Life Skills Academy began out of a partnership with former NFL star Jim Brown (Cleveland Broncos) and Shahid Watson that started its movement by addressing the swelling gang violence in Los Angeles (Compton) and eventually began addressing the issue across the nation (NJ Auditor). Life Skills Academy was created to teach human development – how to teach individuals the art of taking control of their own personal development.

The quality of teaching and learning History has stood low and even had tendency to get worse in the past few years. A report in Tuoi tre (July 26, 2011) revealed that the year 2011 witnessed an unprecedentedly disappointed result in History of the entrance exam, approximately 80-90% of candidates got the mark below five, in some extent, the figure even reached over 98%. This is a seriously alarming warning for Vietnam about the unacceptable quality of teaching and learning History. Although it is significantly crucial to do a research to figure out the effective ways of educating History, the number of studies about the methods of History teaching is relatively limited; in addition, all of them still have not provided enough necessary information (Mr. Truong Tan Sang 2012). Nevertheless, thanks to these studies, we at least have had an overview about what should be done to improve methods of teaching and learning History in Vietnam. According to Phan Ngoc Lien (2002) and Nguyen Thi Coi (2006), changing attitude, upgrading facilities and holding up training courses would be three crucial measures to improve the quality of History educating in Vietnam. Teachers and students in the sampled schools were administered, an investigator – constructed questionnaire. History Achievement Test was also administered on the students in the selected schools.
