Some says that money matters more than brains, wherein college officials favored legacy student over the common applicant. Legacy students are getting preferential treatment because they are child of a wealthy, popular, educated, or alumni of the university. In article, “Time to Bury the Legacy”, Robert DeKoven, a professor at California Western School of Law, stated that legacy admission is unfair and should be eliminated. DeKoven (2003) also pointed out that legacy admission is equal to taking races and genders as factors, which is discrimination. Students should be admitted based on their merit and for a university official to give more weight on having college-educated parents violates the Equal Protection Clause of the Constitution. When first opened, only children of rich families attended. Now legacy admissions are doing the exact same thing. In an article in Writing and Reading Across the Curriculum, titled “The History of Legacy Admissions” Cameron Howell and Sarah E. Turner state that “legacy” means the son or daughter of an alumnus or alumna, but the practical application of the word reveals how it has been derived from its original meaning of inheritance. Legacy admissions began in the earliest days of Harvard College, in which Henry Adams informs us about familial ties among Harvard alumni (226). Although colleges and universities are beginning to emerge there is still a preference of who gets in and how, just like hundreds of years ago. I refuse to participate in the charade of pretending to be surprised to see a classmate, and when I'm asked, "What have you been doing?" as one inevitably is, I never know where to draw the line between "stuff" and the full, self-reflective version one might share with a close friend. I think too much detail implies an exaggerated sense of self-worth and is hence a greater faux pas than too little detail, so I've always hewed closer to the "stuff" version, but this runs its own risk of suggesting you don't think the other person is important enough to merit the full telling of your own story. It's a minefield and, in the social media era, one that's entirely avoidable. I've never been unable to locate an old friend or classmate online.
