First and foremost, Revolution is a political song. Lennon was conflicted by calls for revolution coming from the anti-war movement, the Civil Rights movement, followers of Mao Zedong and others. This internal conflict was reflected in Revolution. Lennon had wanted to express his anti-war feelings prior to Revolution, but was discouraged by the Beatles' longtime manager Brian Epstein. Following Epstein's death in 1967, Lennon decided to take a different creative direction. The Vietnam war was long and expensive, including the loss of more than 3 million lives. In the song “Revolution” by the Beatles (1968), the first stanza “You say you want a revolution Well, you know We all want to change the world” reflects the popular opinion among American

The Last Portrait: the Success of a Music Icon

...“You've captured our relationship exactly. Promise me it'll be on the cover.” former Beatles singer John Lennon told noted photographer Annie Leibowitz after a prompt shoot on an instant Polaroid camera. Lying in the light taupe floor rug, naked John Lennon curled around his wife Yoko Ono with his eyes closed and lips kissing her right-side cheek. He had his left arm and wrist bent around her, locking her slightly tiled head. His right arm stretched out to give a powerful grasp at her freely spread long black hair. He raised his lap against himself and right knee high up to her chest. He hooked her waist with his tensed foot while his left leg tucked under her buttocks. On his right, Yoko Ono dressed in black sweater and indigo jeans extended her torso straight with her right arm around John Lennon and left forearm under her head. Yoko Ono half-opened eyes stared into her distant left through John. They displayed their composure with their emotionless faces and intimate pose. Next to them was their white bed in which a piece of denim cloth was placed. In his famous Dakota apartment in New York City, Annie Leibowitz took the last and arguably the single most controversial photograph of John Lennon. The striking elements of the image reveal not only his affection towards his wife but also his philosophies that brought him more publicity and criticism. John Lennon had doubtlessly made a name for himself in the music industry as the founder member of Beatles even before embarking...

Before the Beatles

...Beatles gave their contemporary generation of kids with misspent youths a hold onto something new - the sound was previously unheard and it enraptured the listener and made them really hear the music. The impressionable teenyboppers of the 60’s were addicted to the most outrageous and controversial thing to hit the shelves, a British, long-haired revolution that would “love to turn us on”. The real stronghold beginning of the Beatles started in Liverpool on October 9, 1940 at 7:00 a.m. while the city was under heavy bombing by the Nazis and a tiny John Winston Lennon was born in a hospital on Oxford Street. Julia and Alfred Lennon gave birth to the soon-to-be prodigy only to divorce before he turned three, leaving him in the care of his Aunt Mimi. He first attended Dovedale Primary School where signs of his creative genius showed early on. After graduating from there, John started at Quarry Bank Grammar School, but soon switched to art school, but soon quit. There he met his first wife, Cynthia and Stuart Sutcliff. Although Sutcliff had very little good musical ability he bought a bass guitar and joined The Quarrymen (a pre-Beatle, Lennon creation). Next came the co-genius of this phenomenon, Paul McCartney. Born on June 18, 1942 to Jim and Mary Patricia Monin, Paul was the eldest of two boys in a very close-knit family. He first attended Stockton Wood Road Primary School but was soon switched to Joseph Williams Primary School at Gateacre because their mother insisted on the best...

Lennon and Politics

...John Lennon and Politics To write a piece on John Lennon such as this, one is likely to get their throat cut, regardless of the angle one takes. Any article on John Lennon is political non-stop unless you were one of the ‘Apple Scruffs’ (Beatles groupies) who came in through their bathroom window for a shot at one of the Fab Four. For one to understand Lennon: The Activist, one should first consider the formative years of his life. This essay will investigate the personal and cultural influences that led to Lennon’s activism – both political and for peace – as well as an in-depth analysis of four of Lennon’s most political songs. In September 1980 he talked about his family and his rebellious nature: Part of me would like to be accepted by all facets of society and not be this loudmouthed lunatic musician. But I cannot be what I am not. Because of my attitude, all the other boys' parents ... instinctively recognised what I was, which was a troublemaker, meaning I did not conform and I would influence their kids, which I did ... I did my best to disrupt every friend's home ... Partly, maybe, it was out of envy that I didn't have this so-called home, but I really did ... There were five women who were my family. Five strong, intelligent women. Five sisters. Those women were fantastic ... that was my first feminist education ... One happened to be my mother ... she just couldn't deal with life. She had a husband who ran...

The Beatles

...| Emerged from Liverpool in the early 1960’s, The Beatles: George Harrison, John Lennon, Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney, together changed music, culture, lifestyles, clothing style, and political attitudes. They sadistically emerged into the American pop music scene and changed it forever. Their energetic lyrics and funky beats with their grazing controversial long hair had a the youth entranced and influenced for a lifetime. Yet those weren’t the only things that had influenced many people around the world. The Beatles involvement with the politics of peace, and experimentation with hallucinogenic drugs and Indian mysticism brought a new look into meditation and a different view of society in whole. John Lennon, the lead singer of The Beatles, was 17 when he formed his first band called The Black Jacks. The band was made up entirely of classmates from the Quarry Bank Grammar School in Liverpool, and almost immediately after they started, they changed their name to The Quarry Men, to represent their school. They played Skiffle music, which was a mixture of folk, jazz, and blues which was popular in England at the time. In the summer of 1957, The Quarry Men were setting up for a performance in a church hall when another member of the band introduced Lennon to Paul McCartney, He auditioned for the band, after they had finished their set, he was immediately invited to join in October, 1957. By February 1958 Lennon’s style in music started moving increasingly away from skiffle...

John Lennon

...To start with I’ll talk about John Lennon as a member of the Beatles. Then I’ll move on to his solo career, his political and peace activism and after getting the general idea of his work I would like us to have a look on his influence upon his generation and maybe ours too. John Lennon became famous as a member and founder of the widely known band: The Beatles. Together with Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, they managed to become the most commercially successful band of the 20th century. During the 1960s, there was even a term used to describe their fans’ intense frenzy towards them: The Beatlemania (photos). All members contributed to the band. But at the time, Paul overshadowed the rest of the members. According to the fans, Paul was the cute one, Ringo was the funny one, George was the quite one and finally John was the intelligent one. The Beatles achieved mainstream success in the UK during the beginning of 1963 and in 1965 they received recognition from the British Establishment when they were appointed Members of the Order of the British Empire in the Queen's Birthday Honours. The USA VS John Lennon: By that time John and the rest of the Beatles had already become idols due to their musical geniuses. But being an idol is not only being adored but also being hated by people. I don’t think is possible for any idol to only be adored. When your face, your ideology is exposed to the world you are vulnerable to criticism, therefore to love but also hatred...

Rlct1 Task 2

...Sean Lennon, son of the late John Lennon, recently wrote an article for The New York Times concerning a town meeting that took place in the local high school of Delaware County, New York state. The meeting was held to discuss infrastructure that a gas company wants to put in place ready for hydraulic fracturing. The gas company held the meeting to discuss the benefits to the local residents by bringing clean energy, in the form of natural gas, to millions. In the article Sean shows subjectivity by exhibiting that he has strong feelings of sentiment about the land right from the start by the title he chose for his article, “Destroying Precious Land for Gas.” He says the land is “precious.” Precious means something that is of great value, and something that should not be treated carelessly. In describing the land in this way Sean is saying that the land holds great value for him. He continues by saying, “Where the Catskill Mountains curl up into little kitten hills” (Lennon, 2012). The description of the mountains as “kittens” brings to mind warm, fluffy, purring little kittens. This emphasizes further that Sean’s feelings for the land are warm and loving. He also connects memories of his late father to his family farm, “… skipping stones with my father and drinking unpasteurized milk” (Lennon, 2012). Research shows that John Lennon died when Sean was five years old; therefore, he would not have many memories to hold on to, so one can assume that those he has would be special...

Pink Floyd Influences

...There are countless significant and meaningful songs that have been released between 1950 and the present day that it would be impossible to analyze each one of them. There are, however, a few ones that shine brighter than the rest. Artists such as The Beach Boys, the Beatles, and the Rolling Stones have had such a huge impact on some people and society that they are still recognized to this day. It’s important to remember that songs are not just made to sound good for the listener. Songs carry a message that could sometimes have a huge influence and impression on people. They can be used to motivate, tell a story and remind people that they are not alone. Pink Floyd, a band formed in 1965, often carried messages through their songs and offer a unique style to their music that help portray their messages. They are an important band and should be covered in “The Rock and Roll Era and Beyond” so students can learn of their significance. Pink Floyd was an English rock band that was formed in 1965. They were mainly active through the 70s and 80s and had a few active periods after that. The members included Nick Mason, Roger Waters, Richard Wright, Syd Barrett and David Gilmour. Syd Barrett left the group in 1968 after he started to heavily use psychedelic drugs and become unpredictable and unstable (Greene, 2001). They mainly made progressive rock and psychedelic rock. Much of their music uses synthesizers and sounds effects such as a grandfather clock or children talking, and they...

...John Lennon-Imagine Imagine there's no heaven It's easy if you try No hell below us Above us only sky Imagine all the people Living for today… Heaven and hell, like all other opposites in this world, occur only in the human mind. God is oneness, and when your mind is free of attachment to this world, and you experience oneness with everything, you are in true Heaven, and there is no hell. To reach this oneness, you must also live in the moment. Time is an illusion. When we see things in this world change from one appearance to another, and use our memory to notice this change, we believe that time has passed. But when we are one with the Universe, time does not exist. Eternity is not endless time, it is no time. Oneness with everything means the constant state of bliss, nirvana. Imagine there's no countries It isn't hard to do Nothing to kill or die for And no religion too Imagine all the people Living life in peace... This is much easier to interpret and come to grips with. Again it deals with separation. Humans suffer because they feel alone or separated. Having enemies makes them feel better about themselves, but this comes from fear. Feeling oneness with all God's creatures, with the Universe itself, is the only one true happiness and piece. You may say I'm a dreamer But I'm not the only one I hope someday you'll join us And the world will be as one… If everyone joined John in the dream of this song, the world would truly be as one. We may be evolving...

Apple Case Study

...Apple A Apple’s rise from a sinking computer hard and software making company to success as the world’s largest vendor of personal computers under the visionary and charismatic leadership of co-founder, Steve Jobs. Leadership is a process not a position (Hughes, L. Richard., Ginnett , C. Robert., et al(2013) Leadership: enhancing the lessons of experience, Page 1). This philosophy further suggests that one is not a leader except perhaps in name only, merely because one holds a title or position. Leadership involves something happening as a result of interaction between Leaders and followers. A real life example of how leadership is a process and not a position is the Andes experience where an amateur Uruguayan rugby team was travelling by airplane en route to a game in Chile. They had a plane crash and never arrived at their destination. In order to ensure continual survival for those who were still alive in the snow covered mountains, everyone took upon themselves to work on ways to survive. Some of the basic issues the Andes survivors faced: tension between individual and group goals, dealing with the different needs and personalities of group members, and keeping hope alive in the face of adversity (Book). The Andes experience also gives us an example of informal leaders emerging from a group. Before the flight there was a boy named Parrado who was awkward and shy both athletic and socially. Nonetheless this unlikely hero became the best loved and most respected among the...

John Lennon

...British songwriters, musicians, producers, arrangers, actors, and filmmakers. Lennon and McCartney were the chief writers for the Beatles, the rock quartet by whose success all other groups are now measured. Without formal musical training, they created music that had universal appeal, yet was sophisticated enough to be appreciated by musical scholars. They expanded the boundaries of popular music, gave it respectability, and helped to bring it, both artistically and commercially, to its present state. The Beatles played a major role in defining the cultural climate of the sixties. From their hair and clothing to their interests in drugs and meditation, young people emulated them and their lifestyles. The Beatles achieved an uncanny balance of personality and talent, with each member of the group (which also included George Harrison and Ringo Starr) strongly individual as well as complementary to the others. Their music reflected this diversity: Lennon wrote songs that were often rebellious, aggressive, and satirical; McCartney's were lyrical, sweeter, and more sentimental. As songwriters, the difference in their natures seemed to aid in the success of their collaborations as each complemented the other's writing style. Later Harrison also became a composer, and his works most often reflected his interest in Eastern music and mystical thought. The Beatles, along with Bob Dylan, are considered responsible for renewing an interest in the power of words to the listening audience...
