Strategic Hr Management in China East Meets West

...2012 Liang, Marier, and Cui 55 S Y East Meets West P O S I U Strategic Human Resource Management in China: by Xiaoya Liang, Janet H. Marier, and Zhiyu Cui Executive Overview This paper outlines important ideological, institutional, and cultural contexts that shape what strategic human resource management practices are possible in Ghina. A detailed review of the main components of the high-performance work systems model suggests that when they are introduced into the Ghinese socioeconomic and political context, the cost-benefit calculus for high-performance work system human resource management practices is different from that in the U.S. context. Yet, in our review of Ghina-based strategic human resource management research we find the expected positive relationship between high-performance work systems and organizational performance in companies operating in Ghina. We conclude with a case example to illustrate how Ghinese firms might be both adopting and adapting the high-performance work system model to better fit their current cultural and economic context. T he Study of strategic human resource management (SHRM) emerged out of researchers' interests in understanding the relationship between human resource management and organizational performance (Delery & Doty, 1996; Kaufman, 2007). Since the late 1980s, most research evidence in this vein has been collected from firms located in the United States (see Combs, Liu, Hall, &. Ketchen, 2006;......

...19, 2006 JOHN QUELCH CARIN-ISABEL KNOOP Lenovo: Building a Global Brand The brand essence of Lenovo is innovation that makes a difference to customers. Branding is not a marketing issue for us, it is a business issue. We have to deliver on products and services.1 — Deepak Advani, Chief Marketing Officer Announced in December 2004, the $1.75 billion acquisition of IBM’s personal computer (PC) division by 20-year-old Lenovo, China’s largest PC maker, made headlines around the world. A relative upstart in the business, founded with $25,000 of seed capital from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Lenovo was acquiring the IBM division that invented the PC in 1981. While Lenovo was arguably the best known brand in China and had some brand presence in Asia, it was virtually unknown to the rest of the world. In 2004, over 90% of Lenovo’s revenues came from China (see Exhibit 1 for financials).2 But with this major deal, Lenovo aimed to become a global technology giant. Annual revenues would triple to $12 billion, making Lenovo the third-largest PC maker in the world after Dell and Hewlett-Packard. As a new multinational with 20,000 employees operating in 138 countries, Lenovo needed a global marketing and branding strategy to match its new reach. This meant determining what Lenovo stood for and designing products that supported that claim. In January 2006, 13 months after the deal was announced and eight months after it closed, Lenovo was preparing for the intense limelight that......

Dear Student: Reproduction of copyrighted material, without prior permission of the copyright owner, particularly in an educational setting, is an issue of concern for the academic community. Unfortunately, the impropriety of much unauthorized copying is all too often overlooked by users in an educational setting. Although copying all or part of a work without obtaining permission may appear to be an easy and convenient solution to an immediate problem, such unauthorized copying can frequently violate the rights of the author or publisher of the copyrighted work, and be directly contrary to the academic mission to teach respect for ideas and the intellectual property that expresses those ideas. With that in mind, the University Bookstore has sought permission and paid royalties for all materials enclosed. The price of your reader reflects those necessary costs. ...“Turkish Airlines experiences rapid expansion”. This is the title of an article appeared on November 14, 2013 in the Financial Times. In the decade 2003-2013 the company expanded enormously, from 65 to 233 aircrafts, the passenger numbers have more than quadrupled and the number of international destinations grew surprisingly from 76 to 199. (See Exhibit 1) At present, Turkish Airlines appears to be one of the most extensive airline companies with 106 connected countries (the last was added in April 2014). It was also acclaimed as the best European company in the last four years consecutively at the Skytrax World Airline Awards, being the third most profitable carrier after Ryanair and Easyjet. The expansion continues: with the project of the third Istanbul’s international airport and the announcements of new destinations to countries like Mexico, Philippines and South Sudan. (See Exhibit 2) How a small Turkish state-owned company became so huge and successful? What are the main challenges it had to face and how did it tackle them? What are the main actual and future issues for a company that is expanding quickly and widely? We will try to give an answer to these questions in the paper: starting from an essential and short presentation of Turkish Airlines historical evolution, making a synthetic overview of its main strategies and analyzing the past and the future challenges in developing countries such as India. Turkish Airline historical steps towards......

Chinese Economy

...The Chinese Economy The People's Republic of China is the world's second largest economy after the United States. It is the world's fastest-growing major economy, with average growth rates of 10% for the past 30 years. China is also the largest exporter and second largest importer of goods in the world. China became the world's top manufacturer in 2011, surpassing the United States. For 2010, inbound foreign direct investment into China surpassed $100bn for the first time, and investment overseas by Chinese companies in non-financial sectors totaled $59 billion. The country's per capita GDP (PPP) is $7,518 (IMF, 93rd in the world) in 2010. The provinces in the coastal regions of China tend to be more industrialized, while regions in the hinterland are less developed. China and the Political Economy of Global Engagement In many respects it was not until 1992 that China really began to engage with the global economy in a significant way. In an inspection tour of development in southern China in 1992, Deng Xiaoping praised the emergence of proto-capitalist practices in open areas and called for further opening. Following Deng’s exhortations, the CCP declared in October 1992 that China now had a ‘socialist market economy’—the ideological battle appeared to have been won, and this victory was given further force when 1993 saw more FDI flood into China than in the preceding 14 years of reform put together. A trade deficit in 1992 was turned into surplus as exports doubled in......
