I. SHOW US AN ACTIVITY YOU ENJOY DOING. TELL US HOW YOU THINK IT CONTRIBUTES TO YOUR PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The activity that contributes the most to my personal and professional development is my volunteering in an association, called Leo Club. This is a youth organization of Lions Clubs International, a secular service organization founded in 1917.
The word LEO stands for Leadership, Experience, Opportunity: its purpose is to promote, through young people, social services in the community. Thus the name: this will develop in the individual qualities of Leadership, it will allow great Experiences and will give an Opportunity to help. We support various projects in the fields of health care, the elders, children, less abled, literacy and education, and self-development.

When I discovered the existence of this association in my town I was really determined to join it, because it gave me the chance to serve my community and improve the world, even if I was just a small town boy. So, when I was 16 years old, I joined the club and after two years I was assigned the position of Secretary. My roles as a Secretary were varied: I was maintaining club records, I was taking minutes at the meetings, I was submitting documents to the sponsoring Lions Club on a regular basis. I also had to maintain the officers’ list, the committee appointments, the attendance records and the rosters of the services we provided.

After 2 years I became the Vice President and now I am at my first mandate of presidency: I have to manage club and board meetings and mentor other Club Officers on their responsibilities. Furthermore, I have to participate to different “Leo Club Conferences”. These meetings are a good opportunity to exchange ideas, to learn new ways of helping our communities and they give me the chance to travel and visit some of the most beautiful cities in my country.

During these years as a member of the association I have had to organise different events, such as sport tournaments, charity balls, meetings with schools, fundraising dinners. This experience has helped me improve my organisational and public relations skills.

Moreover, thanks to the structure of this association, I discovered how to work in a team and how to relate with subordinates and superiors. I saw how important it is to include all members in decision-making processes and assign each member specific roles.
I also had the chance to apply what I learned at university: I had to create budgets to forecast the economic feasibility of events, I had the task of drawing up balance sheets and make profit and loss accounts.

Through this experience I have had the opportunity to meet different cultures and to be part of a worldwide community. Regardless of the language the Leo Club members speak, the religion they practice or the politics they support, we all share a common dedication in helping people in need.
So, this is why I think that being part of this volunteering association has had an important impact on my professional and personal development.

Why Children Kill

...WHY CHILDREN KILL PATRICIA LOAYZA ST LEO UNIVERSITY WHY CHILDREN KILL All through this century, social scientists have been concerned by the idea that crime and violence is too often the domain of juveniles. Even though the number of children who kill is small in the past decade has reached and all time high. According to the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention in 2008 the murder arrest rate was 3.8 arrests per 100,000 juveniles ages 10 through 17. This was 17 percent more than the 2004 low of 3.3 and three-quarters less than the 1993 peak of 14.4 percent. The search for an explanation of age and violence has led to comprehensive studies that have determined the importance of family and relationship bonds. One of these important studies was led by Cathy Spatz Widom, she studied 1,575 kids between the ages of 5 and 18 and determined that a history of growing up between physical abuse and neglect whether directed at the kids or loved ones around them is a immense contribution in participation of violence in later years, that includes a cycle of violence. Neglect and child cruelty can be defined as failure of caregivers to provide respect, love, protection, food, clothes, shelter and medical attention. In the article written on 15 February, 2010 by Susan Donaldson James for ABC News we can see a perfect example of Widom’s hypothesis; a 13 year old, Michigan boy accused of point blank killing. ...behavior that departs from social norms. While all three theories are linked under the social process umbrella and believe that people that are delinquent and those that are not delinquent share the same feelings about society and the role it plays in their lives, they have different beliefs as to how someone does deviant and criminal activities. Social learning theory proposes that people are born good and learns to be bad (Siegel, L., 2013). Criminal behavior and values are learned when an individual associates themselves with another individual that engages in criminal misconduct. Thus the styles of crimes are learned through personal bonds amongst groups. Adolescent children...

This was achieved by conducting a brand audit of two existing and competing pressed juice bars who service in the area, namely; Pressed Juices and Finn Cold Press. This Brand Audit was performed by means of a physical visit to the Pressed Juice store, Hawthorn and collection of numerous secondary sources of data including online articles for research and analysis of the brand impact on consumers. Make Sure You'Re Right, Then Go Ahead

...Red Feather Journal 73 “Be Sure You're Right, Then Go Ahead”: The Davy Crockett Gun Craze by Sarah Nilsen In April 2005, sixty thousand members of the National Rifle Association gathered in Houston, Texas for their 134th Annual Meeting. The keynote speaker for the event was embattled U.S. House Majority Leader, Representative Tom De Lay. After his speech, De Lay was joined on stage by Lee Hamel dressed as Davy Crockett in full buckskin attire and a coonskin hat. Hamel presented De Lay with a handcrafted flintlock rifle that he had made for the event with his mentor, Cecil Brooks. The presentation of the reproduction rifle to De Lay is part of a long NRA tradition that began in 1955 when Walt Disney‟s Davy Crockett series first appeared on television. When Charlton Heston received his handcrafted flintlock rifle in 1989, he uttered his famous words, “From my cold dead hands.” President Ronald Reagan and Vice President Dick Cheney also joined the list of those who received facsimile Davy Crockett flintlock rifles from a man dressed in Crockett buckskin attire. This tradition is part of the NRA‟s efforts to represent the gun as a key instrument in the founding of the United States. It secured this ideological representation in part by appropriating the mythology of early American heroes like Davy Crockett. Davy Crockett became emblematic of the gun mythology of early American life. This mythology was synergized by the NRA and popularized through children‟s television...
