Leonard Williams Medical Center Case Summary

The Leonard Williams Medical Center, own and managed by Williams Medical Services, is an acute care hospital in upstate New York that serves a population of 215,000. After a thorough analysis of organization strategies, the Medical center's information systems steering committee approved the acquisition and implementation of a CPOE system. During a subsequent committee meeting, it was discovered that the WMS physicians were eager to acquire an electronic health record (EHR) system. In a competitive effort, WMS obtained approval to acquire an EHR system after a rival physician group purchased their own system. However, LWMC slowed its efforts when the rival group was forced to uninstall their system after encountering problems during implementation. This resulted in LWMS slowing down their efforts. Presently, WMS has decided to continue their plans to implement an EHR system, but the physicians have ignored the CIO'S technical and integration advice and requirements during the EHR search. The CEO of LWMS is concerned about the EHR process and its disconnect from the organization's IT plan (Wager, Lee & Glaser 2013).

As a result of this disconnect, the medical center's physicians have decided to move forwarded with their EHR adoption without the advice of IT department. There is no mention that the physicians themselves have any IT or EHR experience. In addition, LWMS demonstrates poor project planning by failing to establish effective time lines for each approved project. A disorder may involve factors that interfere with the production of the individual components found in the blood, such as hemoglobin or blood proteins. The nature of a blood disorder may also include situations where the blood does not coagulate properly, or the blood cells themselves are malformed or infected. There is a wide range of blood diseases known today. Anemia is one of the more common examples of a blood disorder. Sometimes referred to as tired blood, a person who is anemic is likely to have a lack of proteins and other elements in the blood. As a result, the blood cannot carry the needed nutrients to various parts of the body and the individual is likely to feel fatigued more often. Over time, anemia can also have a negative impact on the emotions, as the blood is unable to supply proper nutrition to the brain for the production of chemicals that help to maintain an even mood. Sickle cell anemia is one of the more serious types of anemic blood disorder. In addition to fatigue, a person suffering with this disorder is also likely to experience a great deal of pain. Abstract Excess drinking is associated with lost productivity, accidents, disability, early death, crime, neglect of family responsibilities, and personality deterioration. These and related concerns have justified special restrictions on alcoholic-beverage commerce and consumption. The nature and extent of government involvement in this arena vary widely over time and place, and are often controversial. Economists have contributed to the evaluation of alcohol policy through empirical work on the effects of alcohol-control measures on consumption and its consequences. Economics has also provided an accounting framework for defining and comparing costs and benefits of interventions, including excise taxes. Outside of the policy arena, economists have analyzed alcohol consumption in the context of stretching the standard model of consumer choice to include intertemporal effects and social influence.
