LESS THAN LETHAL WEAPONS

Tiger light a non-lethal defense system:

Pepper Flash Launcher:Popped up on the radar in the 1990’s also known as OC Pepper-spray Pellet. Instead of paintballs. It’s a form of powder in a circle ball.

My choices are: Chemical Agent & the FN 303 Launcher Chemical agent is capable of pain, a burning sensation, and irritation of exposed mucous, membranes, and skin. If targeted in the eyes it may affect the vision of the suspect. If targeted in the mouth nose and throat it will affect the suspects breathing. I didn’t know that you may overdose from it. That’s new and informative for my learning. Another new thing that I learnt was that it can not be combined using a Taser gun better known as CEW(conducted electrical weapon. It can be really deadly. The pros about this weapon is that it helps the enforcer to control and capture the suspect. It distracts, disorientated, and incapacitate, allergic reaction, air purifying respirator. The con’s such as most weapons it may be deadly as well as cause bodily harm injury. You may also be affected by your own weapon if not using proper armor. FN 303 Launcher is from the FNA USA. This was really interesting to discover and research on for me. It compresses air powered systems capable of launching fin stabilized .68 caliber. It projects at point-specific targets. Ranges up to 50 meters. It is constructed from a black polymer foundation and aluminum. A flip iron site for accurate aim. A speed loader with 15 rounds. Top it off with a ML-STD 1913 rail that provides approximately 110 shots consistently per filled tank. Awesome right. It may be used as a standalone unit or attached to a m16, M4, or on another incredible model called FN SCAR RIFFLE.
Of course as all weapons may cause bodily harm injury or death. I know I was suppose to only choose 2 but I am going to briefly talk about another recent one Phazzer Enforcer CEW. InStead of Taser the safety shuts down the circuit tech. It also has an alternative of ammunition. This three finger grip has a top mounted HD camera. An Electrical charge can penetrate up to 2 cumulative inches of clothing. It's also dependant on body resistance, simplicity of use, comfort, effectiveness, reliable, and consistency is of course a must have right. The con’s though is that it needs a rechargeable battery. So if your like my husband you will be assed out on duty because most likely it will be dead.

Why Police Force Use Nonlethal Weapons

...The police force around the world use more nonlethal weapons than lethal ones. There’s many ways and reasons police force use nonlethal weapons to subdue criminals. It’s interesting to know what are these nonlethal weapons and how they are used. Since world war two nonlethal weapons have been used to stop and control inhuman people. And many of these weapons include. The Taser is an electroshock weapon developed in the 1970s. Using compressed nitrogen charges, it fires two hook-like electrodes that send an electrical current into a person, causing involuntary muscle spasms. The weapon can also be used without propelling electrodes, producing instead an electrical arc that can be thrust into a person. Tasers are designed to be used instead of firearms, greatly reducing deaths in the process . Another well used nonlethal weapon is the projectile which can be shot from any type of weapon. The primary purpose of a projectile...

Critical Issues Paper

...Critical Issues Paper Breanna Brown CJS/210 December 8, 2013 University of Phoenix Critical Issues Paper Law enforcement authorities are feeling the pressure of protecting and serving now more than ever. From the small, family-oriented community to the nation as a whole, police officers and other law officials are dealing with plenty of critical issues that require a lot of their attention and analysis. Luckily, we are in a time where technology has advanced significantly enough to become a valuable tool in law enforcement. Authorities have become more effective at patrolling, easy access to information and better ways to avoid using lethal force. Technology has certainly made it easier to deal with the critical issues they face. The dangers and issues that law enforcement have to face are plentiful, and both big and small. They have a responsibility to the general public as well as to themselves, and they have to balance these things out while enforcing the law and following the orders of their superiors. Police officers have to develop a relationship with their community if they are to effectively perform their duties. This is done by not being just a uniform in the eyes of the residents. When the residents realize that the police officers are as human as they and are there to help, they are more likely to trust them and include them in on what is happening in the community. The more aware the officer, the better he can keep a rein on crime. However, this can become...

The Use of Non-Lethal Weapon: an Alternative Way on Arresting Felons

...Chapter 1 THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND The terms less-than-lethal, less lethal, and non-lethal are frequently and inappropriately used interchangeably. Almost anything can become lethal if used improperly or if circumstances are extremely unlucky; weapons that are considered to be of Non-Lethal force only decrease the odds of deadly injury. The court addresses the use of less lethal force in the “objective reasonableness standard,” where questions regarding excessive use of force are to be judged from the perspective of a reasonable officer coping with a tense, fast-evolving situation. (Graham, Conner, 2009) This revised standard alleviates some of the “Monday morning quarterbacking” that would otherwise result and respects that officers possess sound judgment skills. (Graham, Conner, 2009) In some arrest situations and other law enforcement activities, the use of force may be required to protect the safety of the officer or the public. Occasionally, the threat to an officer or the public justifies the use of deadly force an amount of force that is likely to cause either serious bodily injury or death to another person. (Graham, Conner, 2009) When use of force is required, but deadly force may not be appropriate, law enforcement officers may employ less-lethal weapons to gain control of a subject. Less-lethal weapons are designed to induce a subject to submit or to comply with directions. These weapons give law enforcement officers the ability to protect the safety of...

Police Misconduct Research Paper

...light. As any field of work, there are always some individuals, who decide to abuse their authority, which then leads to criminal activity. Police officers have access to “less than lethal” known as conductive energy devices, or better known as CEDs the TASER (Stinson et al., 2012). The purpose of “less than lethal force” is that police officers are more likely to succeed to getting a noncompliance individual to cooperate without fatal injury involved, much like the baton, metal flashlights (Stinson et al., 2012) or physical force however, all weapons can be used inappropriately or eventually causing death. Currently, there is not much empirical data available on the criminal misuse of TASERS by police officers although this may benefit researchers...

Critical Issues in Policing

...There are many critical issues that face the policing community on a daily basis. These issues are not only from a personal, but a technological standpoint. There are many types of technology used in the policing community. There are some that enhance the job and those that detract from the functionality of the officers as they try to serve and protect the community. With this ever changing world, there are so many stressors and dangers that police officers have to confront on a daily basis and without the right technology, these officers are left to their own devices. Officers who have symptoms of distress, reduced effectiveness, increased motivation, and dysfunctional attitudes and behaviors at work are said to be in the state of burnout. There are organizations that police can turn to for help with these different kinds of stress but they have to admit that they are having issues. (Roberson) Officers who get burnout are in danger because they lose focus and do not care as much for the job that they do, add to that the likelihood that there is also depression on top of that and you have a recipe for disaster. When an officer gets ready for his day, he must be mentally, physically, and technologically ready for anything that may come his/her way. Mentally, an officer has many stressors: physical, psychological, internal, external, and operational. Physical stressors have to do with their health issues such as heart attack or ulcers. Psychological issues might include...

Less-Lethal Weapons Essay

...Less-lethal weapons, particularly electronic stun devices such as Taser, are marketed to offer unmitigated benefits for police and public safety. This claim is almost valid, yet with flaws. While those weapons are introduced to offer a safer alternative in comparison to firearms, their main intention is to incapacitate without causing permanent harm or death to the person (Heal, 1999), unlike firearms. Taser (2015) claimed that the purpose of their products are “to save lives”, “help keep officers and subjects safe”. They listed a study from Houston Police Department, who shows that their products reduced suspect injuries by 60% when their smart weapons were deployed. Although the less-lethal weapons are the ideal force below firearms, hence...

Criminal Justice

...Dangers of Policing and Less-Than Lethal Weapons When thinking about a police officer, like most people the first thing that comes to mind is that is a dangerous job. The chance of getting shot as an officer may be one of the main reasons that people think of it as dangerous. The truth is police officers never know what situation that they may be faced with, at any given moment on their job. They never know if a person is armed, high on drugs or alcohol, or plan to engage in a relatively recent phenomenon known as suicide by cop (Peak, 2012). Traffic accidents are also known as being in the higher percentile of police fatalities, because officers are in high pursuit but not wearing seat belts. Accord to the Augusta Chronicle although shootings make the headlines, it is traffic-related accidents that are the real killers (2013). Since police are always in harm’s way, it is important that they have weapons to protect themselves, not all weapons used by police officers are lethal weapons. There is a such thing as less-than lethal weapons and these weapons are used by police officers when lethal force is not necessary, lethal force may be used but lesser force may be a better choice for the aggressor, and lethal force is justified but its use could cause bad situations, such as injury to innocent pedestrians or damage to property (NIJ, 2002). It was developed to provide alternatives to using lethal weapons, when it may not be necessary. Less-than lethal weapons was designed to temporarily...

...: * * Student Week 5 Individual Assignment CJA/214, University of Phoenix There has been ten years of research explaining that policing is one of the most stressful jobs you can do. Policing takes a toll not only on the body but also on the mind. Police officers suffer from high blood pressure, insomnia, depression and suicide. These are the hidden dangers among policing that aren’t always recognized. According to Reason Magazine, “police officers are about three times as likely to be killed on the job as the average American. It isn't among the top ten most dangerous professions, falling well behind logging, fishing, driving a cab, trash collecting, farming, and truck driving. Moreover, about half of police killed on the job are killed in traffic accidents, and most of those are not while in pursuit of a criminal or rushing to the scene of a crime”(Reason Magazine, 2011). Officers are exposed to multiple types of dangers on a daily basis. They put their lives at risk everyday with having to make arrests, being shot at in some more complicated situations, and also having the wear at least twenty pounds of gear which puts a toll on the body physically. Officers have to get out of their patrol cars multiple times a day with the heavy gear on which can cause extreme stress. Officers need to be aware of their environment at all times, and need to prepare themselves for the worst at all-time which can potentially end in a very dangerous life threatening situation...
