The Writing Style of an Apology
“An Apology for Using the Word 'Heart' in Too Many Poems” is a poem whose theme circles around how the author, Hayden Carruth, attempts to persuade people to use the word heart with emotion behind it. The title is what captures the reader's attention to this poem. When first reading the word apology, people usually think of it as a regretful acknowledgment which is along the lines of saying, “I'm sorry.” But not this particular apology. Also, when reading the words “heart” or thinking of “love”, the first thought is usually a great feeling and happiness. The author uses his apology as more of a defense and explanation as to what he thinks of the heart. He also gives his viewpoint on how people use the ideal of love so freely. Carruth's writing style stands out the most throughout this poem. He opens and ends the poem with a question, refers to the hear as 'it' in the first stanza, and displays a strong uncertainty of the importance of the heart in the first stanza to dehumanize the value of the word “heart”.
In the poem, the author opens and closes the poem with a question. The first line of the poem says, “What does it mean? Lord knows; least of all I.”(Carruth 1). Carruth is asking the reader what does love mean and acknowledges that he is the last one to know. Being that all three of his marriages ended in divorce could be a reason that Carruth has this uncertainty of the heart, but he still continues on with the poem to give the reader his outlook on what he feels about it. How could the author give his perception about love if he does not know about it himself? This is what makes Carruth opening up the poem with a question interesting because he makes it known that he does not have all the answers and that everyone will interpret the “heart” differently. After opening with a question, he then precedes to give examples of how

Which Is More Important Globalization or Localization

...What is more important Globalization or Localization? I think that localization is more important. Localization reflects in different aspects, such as politics, education, economics, culture, transnational corporations etc. Now I will justify my point of view by pointing out the importance of transnational companies’ localization. First , let’s see what is localization. In short, localization is the process of adapting a product to specific market. Here are some reasons why the localization of transnational corporations is very important: 1.In different countries and regions consumers have different demands. In order to satisfy different demands, corporations should implement localized strategies. For example, one American corporation once tried to sell rice cookers in Japan. In their advertisement was said that if you use this cooker you will make a delicious rice, save a lot of time and make your life comfortable. But this company failed to profit in Japanese market just because Japanese women regard using rice cooker as being lazy and being lazy makes them feel ashamed. Maybe if the advertisement was something like “this rice cookers will make a delicious rice and make your husband happy” everything would be better. In Kazakhstan for instance, if you want to sell a rice cooker you don’t need to talk much about how good the quality is. Just tell the people that it is made in China, Japan or Korea. In Kazakhstan people normally don’t eat rice, the rice cooker, which...

...I was so happy that I believed I will become a good dancer one day, dancing with people to the music. Since my parents were too busy to play with me, I didn’t go home where there was only me, but rushed to the dancing practice room after school. The practice room was just like my home, and I studied and practiced dancing there until very late. Everyday, my mother picked me up from the dancing room to home. It was in my third grade when a girl was transferred to my class. Since her parents were also busy, she companied me till night to wait my mother to pick us up. Every time she saw me practice dancing alone in the dancing room, she came in and took me to play with other students. At the very beginning, the other students didn’t like me because they thought that I was all alone and I wouldn’t get along well with them. They refused to play with me and I had to stay alone again. In the first few weeks, she just came to the dancing room and played with me as long as she found that I was not playing with others. “Let’s go and play”, I said to her but she always said nothing. But one day after a month, she found me and said: “Don’t lock you in the dancing room. You will see the outside world one day, you will know people, you have to face the world and you can do it. Like playing with others, if you don’t tell others you want to join them to play together, how can they know that? You stay at the dancing room and practice, but can dancing replace you to approach the outside world...

Volleyball

...Volleyball is a highly enjoyable sport played by many individuals of all ages today. It is a sport that requires immense physical activity and coordination with other teammates. Volleyball can be very rewarding to our health since it involves movement of all our body parts, mainly the upper body. It also helps to improve our reflex since you have no idea when the ball will be heading your direction over the net. In the game of volleyball, every player has to be prepared to bump, set, spike, or dig the ball to the other teammates over the net. Volleyball can be played professionally, recreationally, on school teams, or for fun. So, what exactly is volleyball? Volleyball, originally called “mintonette” is a combination of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball and it was invented by a man named William G. Morgan in 1895. Sports-information.org says that William G. Morgan was a physical fitness instructor for YMCA in Holyoke, Massachusetts. He wanted to invent a game that was not as physically hard on the body, and that is where volleyball came about. A ball was needed for the game and a basketball was thought to be too heavy so Morgan asked Spalding to make the first volleyball out of calf skin, and they did. 25 years later, after the invention of volleyball, rules were finally enforced into volleyball. Volleyball went from recreational, to professional, to competitive, and then finally a featured sport in the Olympics. The game begins with the serve of the volleyball. After the...

Speech About Esports

...Toastmasters, and guests. How many of you play or played basketball? (they raise hands) Football? (hands) Soccer? (hands) Are there any I haven’t listed? (perhaps replies, if so ask “what” and ask for that) These are definitely games that people like to spectate that we call sports. One of my favorite sports was just broadcast on ESPN2, had a world-wide $10 million dollar tournament where the winners took home $5 million dollars. The players of this sport all did this without leaving their seat. I’m referring to electronic sports, or esports. I’m not just talking about playing a golf, basketball, or tennis game on the Wii. What I do mean is that there are video games out there that take all the main components of traditional sports: communication, training, and teamwork, and make them into their video game. People are playing sports without ever leaving their seat. Ladies and gentlemen, Welcome once again to Digital Sports! (Stanley Parable announcer saying this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRloyLtJ6r0) Let’s talk about the three things you will need to be able to play digital sports effectively: communication, training, and teamwork. Communication in esports is one of the most crucial skill areas. Think about all the things you rely on when playing a traditional sport--body language, hand signals, eye contact, speaking to each other. All of these thing are pretty much removed from esports. Now, it is a little different if you play professionally and you are communicating...

Video Games and Gaming Systems

...Video Games and Gaming Systems Video games and gaming systems have increased in popularity since the first video game; Tennis for Two was created by William Higinbotham in 1958. Just about everyone is playing some kind of video game, on TV, cell phones, and gaming systems (XBox, PS, etc.), but the most popular game types are currently being played online. The majority of the gaming population is playing games for entertainment instead of the traditional media (TV, movies, and music). With the specific audience (let’s call them, Gamers), they are loyal customers and will continue to purchase video games and gaming systems. Since development only takes a few months, the economy will be impacted. According to Xia (2013), “video games is expected to grow from $67 billion to over $82 billion by 2017.” As soon as one video game or gaming system is introduced to the public, there is another one being developed with better graphics and offering more programing complexities to keep their audience wanting more. The environment is impacted largely due to quick development. Every time a video game or gaming system becomes obsolete, consumers rush out to buy the next best thing. Typically, the old video games and gaming systems won't be powerful enough to play the newest games because of processing power, video rendering, and memory needs. The old video games and gaming systems usually end up on a shelf, forgotten, donated, or in a landfills. Gamers prefer to spend...

The Impact of a Management Change in the Workplace

...Abstract This paper discusses the changes of the tennis club I work at after new ownership and new management come in and swiftly begin to make changes. It is the process in which the changes were made that is discussed throughout the paper in regards to John Kotter’s 8-step change model discussed in his book The Heart of Change: Real-life stories of How People Change Their Organizations. It is the steps that were taken to introduce change to existing staff and the team that was put together by the new manager to implement those changes.  Change Analysis: The Impact of a Management Change in the Workplace Introduction Change is never easy and it is especially difficult when the change is the management of an organization. When a change in management occurs, it is often followed by the management making changes to the jobs we do and the work that is done. This kind of major change needs to be effectively completed in order for it to be successful. There needs to be high competencies in management and leadership so that all of the challenges can be met today and tomorrow (Trotter, 2013). I work part-time for the private tennis club my family belongs to. About five years ago, the club was purchased and the new owners wanted to take it in a new direction. The club had been ran exactly the same way for almost 40 years and it was not to the benefit of the owners. The new owners came in with one big idea and it was to bring in a young tennis pro to manage the club. The young new manager...
