LET1 Task 3

The five bases of power are defined as the following. Legitimate power is the ability to influence the behavior of another person based on the title or position held in an organization or hierarchy. Reward power is the ability to influence the behavior of another person based on giving rewards or benefits that others view as desirable or valuable. Coercive power is the ability to influence the behavior of another person based on being able to harm or punish the person. Expert power is the ability to influence the behavior of another person based on knowledge or qualifications held that another person does not have. Referent power is the ability to influence the behavior of another person based on having a desirable character or other personal traits.
In the given scenario the Legitimate Power is described in the relationship between the Marketing Manager and Employee 1. The Marketing Manager is the boss of the department that Employee 1 is a part of. The Market Manager also has Reward and Coercive Power over Employee 1. Employee 1 performs his job and stays for longer than 40 hours per week in order to receive a high performance rating from the Marketing Manager. The high performance rating allows Employee 1 to receive a bonus. The Marketing Manager also has Coercive Power in the relationship with Employee 1. If Employee 1 does not receive the bonus, Employee 1 will not be able to afford the vacation that Employee 1 wishes to take. In the given scenario Employee 2 has Expert Power in the department. Employee 2 is the only certified public accountant in the department. Employee 2 uses this expertise to negotiate a work schedule that no one else has in the department. Employee 2 works a condensed schedule of four days per week. In the given scenario Employee 3 has Referent Power over the other workers in the department. Employee 3 is described as being charismatic. Employee 3 is positive and well liked. Employee 3 was assigned to lead the new project based on the idea Employee 3 explained during the department meeting even though Employee 3 lacked leadership experience.
The bases of power demonstrated in the given scenarios include Legitimate, Reward, Coercive, Expert, and Referent power. The relationship between power and dependency can be described as something that is required to be true in order for power to exist. The level of dependency a person has towards an item or status determines the amount of power another person holds over him. The more important the item is the level of dependency increases.
In the given scenarios legitimate power dependency is demonstrated by Employee 1 being in the Marketing department. Because it is true that Employee 1 is employed by the Marketing department, the Marketing Manager has legitimate power over Employee 1.
Expert Power dependency is demonstrated by Employee 2 being the only certified public accountant in the department. Because it is true that Employee 2 has knowledge and qualifications that others in the department do not have, Employee 2 has expert power over others in the department.
Reward Power dependency is demonstrated by Employee 1 having a desire to receive the reward from the Marketing Manager. Because it is true that Employee 1 would like to receive the reward and the Marketing Manager has the ability to give the reward to Employee 1, the Marketing Manager has reward power over Employee 1.

There are five bases of power that are broke into two groups: formal and personal power. There is also the power of dependency in which Employee B depends on Employee A if he/she has goals and requirements that Employee A can complete.
