Dear Mr. Williams,

My name is. I recently applied to Your University eager to jumpstart my learning experience in a Christian atmosphere. On October 18, 2010 I learned that I had been rejected due to my low grade point average with the previous University I attend earlier this year. I also learned that I could write a letter of explanation of why my grade point average was low. On March 13, 2010 my mother was rushed to the hospital. After a series of tests, it was determined that she was having multiple stokes. After she was stable, she was transferred to the Neurological Intensive care Unit, where she was closely monitored. Still in the ICU, she had an allergic reaction to the medicines used to treat the strokes, the medicines increased her heart rate to 228 beats per minute and subsequently she coded. Within 5 minutes of being revived her heart rate was 242 beats per minute and once again she coded. After the team of doctors and nurses revived her for the second time, the Cardiologist came to me and stated, " I'm sorry, we've done all we can do." The doctor informed me she had 6-8 hours to live. I immediately began to crumble. My mother is my best friend, the thought of losing her would be devastating. When I came back to reality it felt as if the weight of the world was on my shoulders. Funeral arrangements needed to be made, school work needed to be done, my 14 year old brother needed to get to school, I needed to work, my husband of 3 months needed my support and the list of demands continues. Everything was left up to me. Our father passed away in January of 2008. I am the oldest of two children. The next day I spoke the counselor at Argosy to inform them of my mothers situation. I also took forth the steps of withdrawing from classes. Second semester classes had already began. I was two weeks into classes when my mother was admitted to Lynchburg General Hospital. While at the hospital she was diagnosed with CHF(Congestive Heart Failure). My mother is 49 years old. She has suffered 7 strokes in the past 15 years. The most recent leaving her completely flaccid on the right side. She has short term memory loss, slurred speech, and has developed glaucoma in both eyes due to having to be on so many heart and blood pressure medicines. All her life she has devoted herself to my brother and I, so quite naturally it would be only fair to grant her every wish. To be discharged home on July 30, 2010, after an approximately 4 month stay at a nursing home. With all that being said, I pray that you please take into consideration all that I had amongst my shoulders at that time. God knows, I am not expecting a pity party nor am I expecting any handouts, but I would love the chance to better myself and to help others. I believe everyone deserves a second chance, please make my dreams come true. God bless you! I have also had my current supervisor and my Chaplin mail character reference letters to attest how important this is to me. Please take this into great consideration.

...My name is James Lee Roman. I was charged for driving under the influence of alcohol on April 14, 2011. The DUI offense stems from my unfortunate decision to drive myself home after a birthday party. With my senses impaired, I eventually misjudged a turn and hit a tree straight-on. The incident caused my left leg to be fractured in several places, shards of glass also pierced my face. My injuries are extensive and the hours of physical therapy still come in very long, painful strides, but the lesson I learned here was invaluable. I truly realized that I was very fortunate that I did not injure anyone else, to have caused the same kind of damaged and pain on someone or even horribly death. I learned all of these things the hard way, the weeks I spent at the hospital and seeing my mother in tears of which such heartbreak cannot be undone. But I stand to correct myself and my ways. I would like to submit myself to an alcohol treatment program as soon as possible or on any rehabilitative program the court deems proper. I would like to plead for leniency your honor, please allow me the opportunity to turn my life around, I believe the possibility of imprisonment is a huge factor for change alone. Still, I would like to be responsible for my actions and accept the consequences of my offense. Inside me, I believe is an indvidual who wants to be useful and productive to the community. ...express a sudden outcry or add emphasis. 1. Within dialogue: “Holy cow!” screamed Jane. 2. To emphasize a point: My mother-in-law's rants make me furious ! Comma, Semicolon and Colon The comma, semicolon and colon are often misused because they all can indicate a pause in a series. The comma is used to show a separation of ideas or elements within the structure of a sentence. Additionally, it is used in letter writing after the salutation and closing. •  Separating elements within sentences: Suzi wanted the black , green , and blue shoes. •  Letter Salutations: Dear Uncle John , •  Separation of two complete sentences: We went to the movies , and we went to the beach. The semicolon (;) is used to connect independent clauses. It shows a closer relationship between the clauses than a period would show. For example: John was hurt ; he knew she only said it to upset him. A colon (:) has two main uses: * The first is after a word introducing a quotation, an explanation, an example, or a series. It is also often used after the salutation of a business letter. * The second is within time expressions. Within time, it is used to separate out the hour and minute: 12 : 15 p.m. Dash and the Hyphen Two kinds of dashes are used throughout written communications. They are the endash and the emdash. An endash is a symbol (-) that is used in writing or printing to connect numbers or to...

You have received a letter asking you to provide information that would support their retaining your services rather than hiring employees for the same purposes. Assume that this letter may have gone out to other local firms as well. Working as a team, you will do the following two things: (a) After discussing and choosing a small business with your team, you will prepare a letter (in effect, an informal proposal) in response, offering your services to the clinic. (b) Follow up with an oral presentation before the administration of the clinic to discuss and further sell your services to them. On the date scheduled for the final presentation, each student will be responsible for evaluating one team, as assigned by the instructor, on their written and oral presentation. To help you prepare, a copy of the student team evaluation form has been provided. Additionally, students will evaluate the contribution of their fellow team members and themselves in developing the presentation. Evaluations will be taken into consideration in determining grades for the project. In preparing your written presentations, consider the following: • What business services will you choose to provide to the clinic? Billing, secretarial, computer, health, landscaping? • Who will present the letter to the clinic administrators? Who will give the oral presentation–one person? The entire team?...

...The proper way to use Apostrophes Rule 1 Use the apostrophe with contractions. The apostrophe is always placed at the spot where the letter(s) has been removed. Examples: don't, isn't You're right. She's a great teacher. Rule 2 Use the apostrophe to show possession. Place the apostrophe before the s to show singular possession. Examples: one boy's hat one woman's hat one actress's hat one child's hat Ms. Chang's house NOTE: Although names ending in s or an s sound are not required to have the second s added in possessive form, it is preferred. Examples: Mr. Jones's golf clubs Texas's weather Ms. Straus's daughter Jose Sanchez's artwork Dr. Hastings's appointment (name is Hastings) Mrs. Lees's books (name is Lees) Rule 3 Use the apostrophe where the noun that should follow is implied. ...confirmation of the accuracy of findings or attainment of greater certitude in conclusions through additional observations. Theory in criminal justice represents an attempt to develop plausible explanations of reality, which in this case are crime and the criminal justice system. Theory attempts to classify and organize events, to explain the causes of events, to predict the direction of future events, and to understand why and how these events occur. Methodology (methods), on the other hand, involves the collection of accurate facts and/or data regarding the nature of crime and criminal justice policy.
