Dear Mrs.Smith, At the beginning of the first semester, I had some problems with adapting to wearing a uniform at school. Although the uniform does symbolize many positive things such as respect, discipline, unity, etc., there were quite a few problems of many sorts with donning it. Some students see that everyone having to wear the same uniform is ideal, because they don't have to waste time in their mornings choosing the right clothes to meet society's social expectations and judgments. I see uniforms as a problem because I don't choose my day-to-day clothing based on looks, but based on convenience and comfort. I was in fact used to picking the nearest clean set of clothing to school. In particular I found the dress pants to be rather uncomfortable, not to mention how there was only one store where we could purchase the uniform. That being said, uniform issues were in a small corner of my mind compared to fears I had about high school. Due to many sources of various sorts, I had many different views of how my high school life could turn out. I also have a tendency to visualize many out-of -the-ordinary scenarios in my free time, so my fears piled up over my summer break. To this day I still remember my mother lecturing me during the break on how high-school is filled with bad people; This was mostly related to drug use. Although I must admit, she was somewhat correct. Behind the school I would see a group of people smoking cigarettes whenever I went to one of my classes that was in a portable. People that I knew and people on the internet would also joke about how you would be picked on and shoved into lockers and such, but so far nothing like that has happened so I am relieved. I also feared the teachers to some extent in how strict they could be or how much work they would give out. Though it does vary from each teacher and class subject. When I finally started going to St.Francis Xavier Secondary School I had quite the first impressions on the people there and the building as well. The building for example was immense compared to the school buildings for my middle and elementary schools. What really caught my eye was the main staircase which twisted around to the third floor! None of my classes were on the third floor, so I rarely went up there. Not only that, when I went for the link crew tour, the design of the school seemed very elaborate and confusing. It was even difficult to remember which stairs took you to which floors. Even now I get lost sometimes getting from class to class. For the first few weeks, I tried my best to gain a positive first impression on both my classmates and my teachers, because I had absolutely no idea how each one would be. I would be extra cautious with what I said and spoke without assuming or judging based on appearance. I also felt an intimidating demeanor from the teachers due to my fears and since I felt work would be on a whole another level.
As for any hopes and Expectations regarding high school, I am also an avid fan of anime. By that I mean I've watched some anime based on school life, many of which are usually filled with action and interesting plot. Due to that prior influence, high school really felt like a total let down sometimes. The majority of my current school life has been and still is writing assignments and completing work. Though I do believe that itself has been interesting in its own sort. Not to mention that I'm only in Gr.9, giving me many more hours of time to waste before even having to consider my future. That doesn't mean I don't have my own general path set out for my future career though. I now firmly believe that now I can aim to become someone who has a well-paid, respectable career.

...Self-reflection I am a descriptive writer and a narrative writer. I spend most of my time writing poetry and letters so that is where the descriptive comes from and that is what works best for me. For example, I enjoy reading this kind of work just for enjoyment so it is often how I write on a daily basis. Throughout the narrative portion of writing I like to tell a story. I enjoy expressing my thoughts. Furthermore, I tend to use more adjectives and adverbs as well as figurative language and imagery, to create detail that allows the reader to envision the scenery and events in their minds. I learned that by using this process it allows me to get my point across easier for I and the reader to grasp the concept of what I am discussing at the time. I have tried other writing styles as well, others such as persuasive writing don’t work for me because with real life experiences I am never trying to persuade someone to purchase or do anything. First semester and throughout the second semester I have noticed a lot of improvement in my writing. For example, I have understood the importance of keeping my reader interested in what I am talking about from beginning to end and also allowing it to flow and by that I simply learned to not make my essay or paper choppy, I break up the different arguments or points that I am trying to get across in subtopics and that makes my work easier to understand and read. As far as critical thinking I simply make my judgments clear and well thought...

Midterm Review

...from approximately 1500 C.E. to the present. The course differs from the traditional Western Civilization class in that the entire world rather than Europe alone is the focus of study. The central questions the course will ask are these: What is Modernity, that is, what do we mean when we ask of "the modern world" in which we live? How have the political, social, cultural, and economic forces that we associate with modernity changed our world and its people during the past 500 years? Why has the intercommunication, interaction, and interdependence of the peoples of the world become so much more intense during the past 500 years than they were in earlier ages? How and why did western civilization rise to global domination in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and how has the challenge of western power and cultural prestige affected the course of history of all the World's people? Finally a question that we should be asking throughout the semester: how have the patterns of world history over the past 500 years determined or affected 1) the way we now live and think, and 2) our prospects for peace, prosperity, and the "pursuit of happiness" in the coming decades? This course is NOT primarily a narrative survey of civilizations, dynasties, and nations. The history of humankind is more than the sum of the histories of particular countries or empires. The most important developments in history have not taken place merely within the boundaries of nations. Rather, large-scale...

...that you have enrolled in our Professional Selling course. Special class projects are designed to involve you in the learning process through participation and many exercises that represent the "real world." Notes are provided to facilitate participation in the class, though lectures may emphasize particular points or examples to illustrate specific sections. ...self-introduction. Coming to a new place and meeting a lot of new people naturally includes introducing oneself for quite a number of times. But as Fyodor Dostoyevsky lets his narrator in the Letters from the Underworld say: “By the way, what is it that all respectable men talk about most readily? Answer – about themselves. So I too will talk about myself.”1 So I will join in and as I have done for a hundred times this past week I will happily introduce myself another time, this time in writing and in essay style. My name is Matthias Haufe and I am from Erlangen, a beautiful town in the northern part of Bavaria, Germany. The surrounding region is known as Frankonia, which I mention, because quite a few people there pride themselves as being Frankonians rather than Bavarians. There I spent the past thirteen years of my life, going to school, doing my civil service and later attending university. Before that I had lived in a small German village for six years and in Tokyo, Japan for four years. So if one takes all the aforementioned numbers they amount to 23, which is also my age. Having mentioned university, the question immediately arising is of course that of what I study. I major in English and Religion and minor in History and before I came here I had just finished the fifth semester of my studies. The goal of my studies is to become a teacher in a German “Gymnasium“, which roughly corresponds to an American high school. So much about my identity. “But how does it come that...

...Nansi Hermiz Red I.D. 815953613 SDSU Exchange Application/ Sciences Po Motivation Letter 10.08.2013 Studying abroad is something every college student dreams of doing, yet only those who are fearless actually accomplish it. Studying abroad never came to mind until one day I realized that I would be spending plenty of time in Paris, France. I did not want to waste any time in a different country for no reason, so studying abroad was the perfect idea. I was motivated to apply for the SDSU Exchange program once I finish speaking with an excellent Education Abroad advisor named Ryan C. McLemore. He made me realize how worthwhile the program will be and showed me every step of the way to achieving it. I figured I would give it a shot and make my time in Paris, France worthwhile instead of wasting time from achieving my higher education. My biggest preparation for this program is that I am currently engaged to a man who is a legal resident in France and he has helped me quite a bit. Although I have not taken any french classes at SDSU, I am constantly speaking to a French resident for the past 2 years. I have also been to Paris, France multiple times so I know how the living status is there. I plan on applying for the Spring semester abroad for my exchange program so I have around 6 months to go community colleges and language school in Paris before I start my semester in the Sciences Po University that is much more rigorous. I plan on taking all my classes in english...

...made me want to know more about the sole purpose of these fraternities. For these reasons I chose to select this culture for my essay. The definition of a fraternity is defined as " chiefly social organization of male college students, usually designated by Greek letters". (Morris 1982:523) This definition is not true to all where most fraternity members are seen as drunks who accomplish nothing scholastically or socially . Unfortunately, the definition and portrayal of the people fails to mention the fact that membership in a fraternity is a life-long experience that helps its members develop social, organizational, and study skills , and also teaches true, everlasting friendship. As a matter of fact most of our presidents were members of a Greek organization. "The first fraternity was founded for literary and social purposes at The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia on December 5th 1776." (Klepper 1937:24) Throughout the nineteenth century many new fraternities were founded, but none of these were permanent. By the end of the nineteenth century there were over thirty general fraternities in the country. Today's fraternities still have the characteristics of past fraternities. These characteristics include "a ritual, oaths of fidelity, a grip, a motto, a badge , friendship and comradeship (Klepper 1937:56) . During membership one must learn leadership skills . For this reason fraternities embrace these offices held by members:...

What Is a Story

...packing my car with pretty much my entire life in it, I started to feel a sense of doubt about myself. I nudged away the initial thought and said my goodbyes to my parents and my two sisters. For about the first four to five hours on the road it was dark and this feeling kept creeping back into my mind. “Would I repeat what I did back in fall of 2008 and spring of 2009?” Thinking about all the things I did wrong back then with regards to taking advantage of many things I should not have. Drinking, partying, and playing video games ten plus hours a day just to name a few. The fall of 2008 was not as bad as the spring mostly due to soccer. Being on the men’s team at UMFK kept me in check for most of the first semester with actually having straight A’s for most of the semester. Until we made it to Nationals all the way out in Fresno, California. This was an opportunity of a lifetime getting to miss school for two weeks sounded like the best time ever at 18 years old. Now being 23 I wish I knew what I know now cause the decisions I would have made would have been a complete 180. As we left for Fresno, California the last thing that was on...

Budget Guidelines

...own budget. The allocation letter, in addition to various other data collected at the unit level, is essential to completing this process. Central administration distributes the allocation letter, which includes the assumptions and the initial allocation amount. All units' budgets are reviewed and compiled by the Budget and Financial Planning Office. The result is an overall university budget that is taken to the Board of Trustees for final approval in May. Budget Assumptions The assumptions that feed the budget process are: tuition rate increase, financial aid, gift revenue, overhead rates on sponsored projects, the salary pool, the benefit rate, capital requirements, and the endowment distribution. Central Allocation The colleges and major administrative units receive an annual allocation of funds to support their operating budgets. The allocation amount is incremented each year based on the assumptions and any other known factors. The initial allocation letter are sent to the units in the early fall. The units use the information contained in the allocation letter to build the budgets for the upcoming fiscal year. For most of the colleges, the majority of the allocated amount is used to support faculty salaries. In addition to the lump-sum allocation, the colleges also budget for additional revenue sources and expenses based on the specific activities of their organization. Following each financial review, the allocation letters are revised to accurately...

My Writing Reflection

...Throughout the course in my letters and feedback, I have had many comma splice comments. I want to be able to recognize those when I am proof reading my own paper. Another area I want to improve on, is putting my ideas that are in my head on paper in a way that it makes sense. I have so much to say, but sometimes struggle on the “right” way to say it so that the reader understands what I am talking about. I have gotten better at organizing my paper so that it flows and make more sense, but it is still something I want to work on. I want to be able to add better transitions in my paper, so that my ideas don’t come to an abrupt end with no conclusion, which is something I noticed in my culture assumption essay. Improvements in my Reading Throughout the coursework I have sharpened my critical analysis skills. I have glanced back at some of my chapter summary writing assignments and noticed how my analysis have evolve. I have better been able to relate and find my own experience in a writing or book. I was able to connect with some of the points Robert Putnam stated on a personal level. Throughout high school, and even in college, I just read my book to complete assignments, not really taking the time to consider how it may connect with my life. This is something I did this semester with Robert Putnam’s book, “Our Kids: The American Dream in Crisis”. Areas to improve in my...

...happen to have been written by authors who identified as black in their respective historical moments? Are there distinct formal and thematic paradigms that unify these texts into a coherent literary tradition? What relation do black texts bear to other black texts, as well as to the Western canon? Are African-American texts necessarily “political,” by definition protesting the social and political marginalization of black people in America? Do African-American texts represent the particular experiences of African Americans, or do they (also?) address universal problems and experiences? The cultural, literary-formal, and political distinctiveness of African-American writing will thus be the guiding theme of this course’s rigorous, fast-moving survey. Additionally, students in 311 will acquire knowledge of the following: * The ways African-American writers have negotiated the tensions, contradictions, or harmonies between African and American identities within the experiences of African-American subjects in various historical periods. * The strategies employed by African-American literary and sociopolitical texts to analyze and protest racist and economic oppression, as well as racial and sexual violence, in various historical...
