Li-Young Lee: The 2014 Caesar and Patricia Tabet Poetry Reading
Li-Young Lee. What a man. After watching his lecture/ poem reading at the 2014 Caesar and Patricia Tabet Poetry Reading at the University of Dominican, I understood the beauty through poetry is something that is felt and should come naturally. His main focus about love and the beauty of love showed through his rhythmic pauses and passive tone. It was amazing to hear his point of view through everything. Especially his thoughts on the world around him and the meaning of words. “It was a human voice sacralized.” There is a deeper meaning to poem that anyone could ever understand. His love poems, not love towards a certain individual but became a work dedicated to God. Like how he said: “I don’t believe in God, I’ve experience God”, poetry is all about experiencing the emotions and not just believing in the words that you write. Each word has a very distinct purpose that contributes to the growth and depth of the poem. An audience member pointed out that there is a sense of quietude behind Li-Young’s poems and he agreed and explained that because language is too full, it’s best to be more quiet and let the present words ring and vibrate into the reader’s mind. I enjoyed that he said language reflects a sense of emptiness as it is like a void. Because all human speech is done by the outward of breathe, when we speak, it is ultimately using each dying breath to create words. A poem is a musical score for the human life. It’s very beautiful and precise. In other words, when he says he’s writing love poems but it always ends up about God, I believe he wants us to understand that poetry can come from anywhere, anytime, anyplace. There is no ‘formula’ for it. It is not a surface level usage of words but everything comes together precisely and purposefully to get at a point. Don’t get caught up with what must be

Imagery In The Gift By Li-Young Lee

...In “The Gift” by Li-Young Lee, the speaker recalls a childhood memory of his father removing a splinter from his palm. The splinter provides the metaphorical gift of pain endurance that the speaker appreciates later in his life. The dangerous imagery surrounding the splinter emphasizes how a child fantasizes pain. The splinter is first introduced as being metal, which could refer to any blade among an assorted metal weapons instead of a flimsy splinters. The speaker’s father told a tale to distract the speaker from the pain during the process, and the father’s voice is simultaneously “a well/ of dark water” (7-8) and “a prayer” (8). The murky water presents the negative prospect of pain, with its indeterminate magnitude and ending, but the...

Eating Together By Li Young Lee Summary

...The poem “Eating Together” by Li-Young-Lee is a short but very well written poem. In this, a family sits down to have lunch together and remembers their father who is unfortunately no longer there to join them. Li-Young-Lee, in the poem “Eating Together” develops the idea that the loss of a loved one can make daily events significant in different ways. Imagery plays a big role in this poem by helping the reader visualize what the scene is in the poem. For example, the poet doesn’t come out and just say that their father died recently. Instead he uses other words and clues to get that message across. “My mother who will taste the sweetest meat of the head, holding it between her fingers deftly, the way my father did weeks ago” (Line 5,6). This is an example of imagery...

Poem Analysis: The Gift By Li-Young Lee

...The Gift (An Analysis of The Gift) We decided to read a few poems today that were written by great, influential poets. Out of which the one that spoke to me the most was “The Gift” by Li-Young Lee. he was born in Indonesia after his parents were exiled from China. In 1964 him and his family moved to the United States. I chose this poem because it showed a father’s compassion, a husband's compassion, and how through the generations one learns from the ones before him. First off, this poem shows a father’s love for his child. The speaker talks about how when he was a young child, his father removed a metal splinter from his hand. He said that in his childish mind he thought he was going to die. His father, in a calm, cool and collected voice...

...to know that a father's work is never done. To be a good father, you have to be present, be a good disciplinarian and role model, and be sympathetic to your children's needs without being a pushover. I will explain the similarities on how the two fathers of the stories were good role models. The bond between a parent and a child is one of the strongest things on this earth. The relationships between father and son in the poems "The Gift" by Li-Young Lee, and the story “Digging“ By Seamus Heaney. In all two genres father and son are the most prominent characters. All have the absence or near absence of mother figures. They also all show how important a father is to his son. Show the importance of father-son relationships through the fathers' involvement in their sons' lives, the fathers teaching their sons life skills, and the fathers' immense love for their sons. Love with admiration, care, demurred, unrestricted, warm, role model and respect. The similarities between the stories “Digging“ By Seamus Heaney, and “The Gift” by Li-young Lee is that the kids have role model fathers. “Digging” describes how a boy looks up to his father and the son observes and writes it down as he is proud of him. in the poem it says “When the spade sinks into gravelly ground. My father digging, I look down”(3-4). It states that the father is shoveling in to the dirt of the ground, he looks down. He looks down to his paper and pen where he writes everything down. How I know that he writes everything...

Library Brings Hope

Photo: Li Li-fa, Taipei Times Taipei Times – A boy reads in the Sunflower Library in Terong Village in Pingtung County's Changjhih Township earlier this month. Photo: Li Li-fa, Taipei Times Named after a flower that symbolizes vitality and hope, the Sunflower Library in Terong Village (德榮) in Pingtung County's Changjhih Township (長治) is more than an ordinary library. Having survived the brunt of storms and frequent flooding, it has become an embodiment of the power of love and collective effort. The establishment of the library stemmed from a tragedy involving a young girl surnamed Huang (黃), who died in a car accident a decade ago while cycling to a downtown library to return some library books. At the time, the village did not have a library, which was why the young girl had to cycle a long distance to borrow books. Saddened by this misfortune, Lee Chen-wei (李鎮衛), who then served as a village coordinator, resolved to take action and push forward with the creation of a library in the remote community. The proposal was encouraged by Lee's wife, Tsai Hui-ling (蔡慧玲), who joined her husband's efforts to bring about changes to the region. A well-connected man, Lee received approval to locate the proposed library within...

...One’s life story can be written out of two words. In this case it’s precision and persimmons. It’s crazy how two words with different meanings can mean the same thing or paint the same picture. This poem has two words that bring a flurry of memories back to the poet mind beginning with a persimmon. The persimmon shows a loving connection between two people. “Persimmons” is a free verse poem by Li-Young Lee, who tells a narrative that being in elementary school. He didn’t know the difference between precision and persimmon, but throughout the poem he illustrates both words. The poem shows precision in the other words he has trouble with words like fight and fright, also wren and yarn. The poet has a connection with these words too which makes it hard for him to remember the difference. Lines 32-33 make it clear how he relates the words so close to each other. “Fight was what I did when I was frightened, fright was what I flet when I was fighting (Lee, 557).” This poem dramatizes the conflict between good and bad memory. The poet is in class and gets slapped on his head because he doesn’t know the difference between persimmon and precision. The fact that he needs precision to pick a ripe persimmon makes it even harder for the international student. The poet also holds out on the class information about the persimmon that Mrs. Walker has brought to class. He knows that it was unripe, so he doesn’t join in the eating because he feels as that is payback for his mistake with the...

Persimmoms

...Assay about Persimmons-li young lee 2010112077 곽미진 In the first stanza, there is a situation teacher makes a child stand on the corner for not knowing the difference between two words “persimmons” and “precision”. The boy does not know well about two words because his native language is Chinese not English. So his mental ability to distinguish two similar pronounced words “persimmons” and “precision” is not formed yet. But the boy thinks there are some connections between two words. It is revealed in the second stanza. To eat a persimmon, we need precision. At first we have to distinguish whether the persimmon is ripe or not. And when we eat that fruit, we have to know how to peel the persimmon precisely. The teacher stands for general stubborn types of people. They judge the student in simple way – only the outlook not inner personality. The teacher doesn’t care about the fact the boy is now accustomed to handling English deeply and he doesn’t try to understand. In this aspect, we can know that stanza reveals the cultural barriers caused by language. After reading all of the stanza following, I thought maybe the language suggest the reason, generalized values.. if we can’t make a distinction between tow similar sound words, people treat us fool. Even if the boy can’t tell what is the exact meaning of the two word, he can think about connection between two words in sensitive way using a association. The narrator takes revenge when teacher bring the unripe persimmons...

Li-Young Lee's Poem 'My Father, Is Reading Out Loud'

...times than not, those answers will range anywhere from: happy, sad, angry, or somewhere in between. At any one moment, people can have numerous conflicting feelings about the same subject. Li-Young Lee’s poem, “My Father, in Heaven, Is Reading Out Loud,” perfectly demonstrates how the feelings we have for our fathers are complex, not simple. Lee’s complex feelings for his own father are first shown when he explains how “[his] shoulders ached from his [father’s] gaze” (320-21). This statement is one that most people can probably identify with. As children, we have a deep-rooted desire to make our parents proud of us. However, sometimes the pressure on us gets to be too much. This pressure leads to feelings of resentment, as a result of not being good enough. Lee describes his own experience with resentment, which stemmed from him feeling like “a remarkable disappointment to [his father]” (321). Resentment is just one of the many complex feelings we...

...CONSUMER BEHAVIOUR Service Quality Perceptions of Domestic Airline Consumers in India: An Empirical Study SUBMIITED TO: MEENAKSHI HANDA BY: SAHIL MALHOTRA (13) RAHUL KALRA (39) Abstract Pricing and service quality are the key variables that decide the brand equity of each player in the airline industry. Existing literature suggests that measurement and management of service quality is the key for survival of airline companies. This research paper examines the service quality delivered by four major airlines in India on the backdrop of stiff competition in the airline service sector. The process of traveling on a domestic airline was divided into pre-flight, in- flight and post-flight experiences. A survey was conducted to find out the perceived service quality of frequent fliers on each of the four airlines across a series of service performance variables. The airline brands were positioned in a perceptual space, where the perceived service attributes were also mapped. Clear differences emerged among the airlines, with two of them perceived as being similar to each other, and the other two differing in many respects. INTRODUCTION India at present has twelve competing airlines in the domestic market as against a single government owned airline in 1991. According to McKinsey Quarterly (2005), the Indian aircraft market is the world’s second largest commercial aircraft market. On-time performance and service levels have risen dramatically and fares have...

...Kawabata: The Weight of Beauty in Asian Literature "The Grasshopper and the Bell Cricket" by Yasunari Kawabata, McGraw Hill, 2004. Twentieth century Japanese writer Yasunari Kawabata's storytelling reveals a distinctly Asian appreciation for detailed simplicity, subtly layered significance, and the gift of shared beauty. Because Asian art developed independently of Western art for hundreds of years, full enjoyment of it demands an understanding of the principles that shape its aesthetic viewpoint. In Asian art, especially that of Japan, there is a cleanness that avoids minimalism. Each detail is important, but need not be elaborated. Woodcut paintings, with scenes framed by a branch of cherry blossoms or the mast of a ship show a perspective trimmed of all superfluity, distilling the beauty. The haiku is an example of this paring down to perfection. Oshima Ryta, wrote in the eighteenth century: All the rains of June: and then one evening, secretly, through the pines, the moon! Kawabata's "The Grasshopper and the Bell Cricket" is written with the same rapt attention and delicate simplicity. He shows us the children and the lanterns on the hillside with gracefully balanced sentences, "The lanterns brought out the shadows of the bushes like dark light. The children crouched eagerly on the slope whenever they heard an insect's voice." Carefully chosen words, like the placement of the a cherry on an orange or the angle of a shrimp flayed on top of a sushi roll, accent rather...

A Critical Reflection of the Value of Work Placements

...Placements Word Count: 967 An internship is a directed, practical learning experience, outside of the normal classroom setting, in which students sharpen skills, gain experience through work on advanced productions, apply classroom learning to professional settings or projects, and learn first-hand how professional companies or organizations operate (Palomar College, 2005). It is generally know that many universities offer sandwich degree courses and this paper will critically examine the value of work placements undertaken by universities students. The popularity of work placements and internship has grown in the recent years as young graduates found it hard to secure a job. In 2011 UK government offered ‘youth contract’ to help young people getting jobs and this was initiated when youth unemployment has hit a record high, with more than one million young people out of work in the UK, and applicants far outweighing the number of entry-level and graduate vacancies ( Bennetts and Emilie, 2011 ). There are a number of benefits of work placements to both students and organisation offering internships. According to Gazzard (2011), ‘Placements can provide industry with a cost-effective labour pool and develop a pipeline of motivated and competent future employees.’ An article published in Hispanic Engineer & Information Technology (2013) states that internship experience not only benefits the company that a student work for, but internships give students an opportunity to figure...
