Life in Early Virgina

There were many key factors that made early life in Virginia miserable. Many of these unfortunate events began before the settlers even arrived at Virginia, and many died on the four month long expedition through the Atlantic Ocean. Once the remaining crew arrived at the New World, conditions did not improve and due to many different aspects. Lives of early Virginia settlers were made miserable due to consistent high death rates and food shortages.
Hardships began even before the settlers first arrived on Virginia’s shore. Many traveler’s died on the four month voyage such as in April 1607 when only 105 of the original 144 settlers arrived to Chesapeake Bay. The hard times continued that summer when 46 more settlers died and even still in the winter months when by January, only 38 men were still alive. The death toll was still shocking even 15 years later in 1622 when roughly 3,500 Virginians went missing. There are some theories that account for some of the missing people, but cannot rationalize the whole sum of people. Some theories include the immune system being weakened by the voyage, diseases including malaria and typhoid fever, and poor diet.
Another reason life in early Virginia was miserable was because of food shortages. The lack of food especially hit hard during the winter months when farming did not occur. During the winter of 1609, the food supply they had including sheep, goats, hens and hogs dwindled, so the settlers had to switch to eating “doggs catts ratts and myce.” One settler became so desperate that he salted and ate his wife until he was caught by the authorities. One thing that baffles historians is the lack of corn the settlers had. Corn was relatively easy to plant and tend to, the Indians only catered to corn a few days out of the year and produced copious amounts. The lack of corn became so bad that in Governor Argall’s proclamation of 1618, he created a law that required farmers to grow corn. Why should a starving man be forced to grow food? Well, most settlers wanted to grow tobacco instead, hoping to generate a profit. Growing tobacco took a lot of time and effort, so the settlers spent all of their time tending to it, instead of corn. Although there were many factors that contributed to an overall miserable life in early Virginia, none made it worse than the staggering death rates and the lack of food. Men were dying by the thousands, death counts beginning before the ships even arrive on the shores of Virginia. Food shortages also made life in Virginia unbearable due to surprising the lack of food, even corn, which wouldn’t have taken much work to grow. All of the factors added up to the unhappy life of the early Virginia settlers.

...“Jamestown and triumphs” Julie Atkinson Reconstructive US History Professor Brumbaugh December 20,2014 Before the settlers landed in Jamestown, The Indians occupied the land and lived there for centuries. They were the first people to arrive in Jamestown. Some say there were 25,000 Indians; others say around 50,000 of the American natives, who lived on the land. There were about thirty different tribes whom the powhatan chiefdom took charge. However, each tribe had their own chief. In time there would be a change; King James 1 of England granted for another colony to be established under the Virginia Company of London which consisted of many wealthy Englishmen who wanted to invest their money into the company. They expected to open new lands for financial and patriotic explorations and use the resources of the new world. They wanted to establish English shipbuilding industries and to convert the Indians to Protestant Christianity. The Spanish were aggressive to convert the Indians to Roman Catholicism. Since there were already Spanish colonies in America, the English needed to develop new employment opportunities for the English. For this reason, English people wanted their own colonies. Around the time of 1607, there were three ships sailing from England: the Susan Constant, the Godspeed and the Discovery. They held around hundred and fifty English men, and boys who sailed four months before they reached Jamestown. During their voyage they encountered crowded conditions...

The Cockos Egg

...is really stranger than fiction. When reading this book I found myself wondering the same things that Cliff did and felt the same frustration and excitement the chase must have brought to him. What does a cuckoo’s egg have to do with computers? How does a $0.75 accounting discrepancy lead to the KGB? And I asked myself how does an astronomer turned systems manager catch a computer hacker? When Cliff was transferred to the Lawrence Berkley Lab computer lab he had no idea that there was a cuckoo’s egg hiding in his nest (network) that would eventually hatch not just in his computers but into a cat and mouse chase that would lead from Berkley to Virgina to Mitre (a Network Service Contractor) to numerous military bases not just in the United states, but around the world, to eventually Hannover, Germany and consume most of his life for over a year. Compare New World and John Smith

...Midterm Essay Christopher Riojas Keiser University Introduction Adventure and discovery of land and territories in the early centuries were the order of the day for the majority of the stable nations, armies and organized ethnic groups who searched for food, water, and places of settlement. The adventuring movements of communities across the world brought about acquisition of property, resources and territories that later converted to the states and the countries under currently existing geographical boundaries. This effect culminated in more aggression in the movement and acquisition of territories that later turned out to be colonized. During the pre-colonial era, communities under the leadership of ethnic chiefs controlled tribes and extracted resources that were only within their territories. More land was unoccupied thus attracting other foreign immigrants who, moved in search of better resources and experiences. It is in the spirit of discovery and colonization, this article puts into perspective the development of a new state of Virginia in America. Precisely at Jamestown, as it is told through a film called “The New World”, directed by Terrence Mallick, and a story book called “The General History of Virginia, New England, and The Summer Isles”, by Smith (pg.57-69). Family Counseling Theory

...present. The essential theory behind family therapy is that a family is a system made up of parts and a problem with one of the parts affects the entire system. Families try to maintain stability, if one member of the family does anything out of the "norm" for that particular family; the other members of that family will fight against him or her to bring things back the way they used to be. This is problematic, especially if one member of the family is in therapy and learns new coping styles, yet the family is fighting their healthy changes. The theory that will be addressed is that of Virginia Satir. Virginia Satir was considered the Mother of Family Therapy. (Wikipedia) Satir is a Wisconsin native raised on a farm in Neillsville. At an early age, Satir was intrigued by the family and she knew intuitively that there was more that went on in families than was apparent to the naked eye. Her family moved to Milwaukee, WI in order for her to attend high school. Later she attended the Milwaukee State Teachers College, which is now called University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Satir went on to publish Conjoint Family Therapy, Peoplemaking and The New Peoplemaking (Margarita Suarez/Virginia Satir Global Network) just to name a few of the 12 she had either written or co-written. The history of Satir’s family therapy model started with her work as a social worker during her time in private practice in 1951, where she saw families in therapy. Later, in 1955, at the Illinois State Psychiatric...

The Great Depression and Wwii

...Quakers in the Civil War Quakers or as the Society of Friends were most known as a faith-based religion, were peace loving, anti-war, anti-slavery, pro-conscientious objectors and a non-tax paying faith-based religion that came to exist in the Eastern colonies of the America’s since 1680 until modern day. In 1740, many Quakers that were based in Philadelphia became a hotbed of anti-slavery causes and became the first state to ban slavery. One of the most famous actions of these Quaker Friends was the successful transfer of fugitive slaves via “Underground Railroad” from the slave states to both Union as well as Canadian cities from the hub city of Philadelphia. The goal of most slaves who attempted to escape their masters and plantation slave life was not seeking Canada but places of safety. This mysterious Underground Railroad was made famous by such previously fugitive slaves as Ms. Harriet Tubman and Mr. Frederick Douglass. These two black people as well as many others, were assisted in their escape from bondage by other blacks (free and post-fugitive blacks) and especially by influential anti-slavery and anti-war white people such as Quakers and other anti-war and Christian based faiths. Many of these groups were instrumental in providing ‘conductors’, station masters’ as well as money, clothes, horses, and transportation as well as reading and writing skills. It has been estimated 40,000 fugitive slaves utilized some aspect of the Underground Railroad from the bondage of...

Everyman Research Paper

...Kina Hamilton Professor Meng English 102 18 October 2015 Scared to Death To understand an unknown author’s perspective and purpose for creating a literary piece the historical content must be examined. The only significant value the unknown author of “Everyman: the morality play” placed on death is the ability to place fear in the hearts of his audience long enough to keep attention on his work. The author begins with an introduction calling it a Treatise to present death as the focus. He would like to challenge the audience to do good works in order to win God’s love and acceptance. He does not think the topic of good deeds alone will gain the attention of an audience. The fear of dying is a proven success and provides an interesting plot for the play. “HERE BEGINNETH A TREATISE HOW THE HIGH FATHER OF HEAVEN SENDETH DEATH TO SUMMON EVERY CREATURE- TO COME AND GIVE ACCOUNT OF THEIR LIVES IN THIS WORLD, AND IS IN MANNER OF MORAL PLAY.” The imagery can be pictured by simply reading the plays Treatise. The bold capital letters suggest a penetrating, deep, angry taunting voice. The author is the omniscient narrator to his play. He begins to address the audience with the use of a messenger. The messenger comes across as a southern Baptist preacher on a Sunday morning. Tanner of Humor in Everyman and the Middle English Morality Play said “short of sermons, no other form of literature is so unequivocally preachy” (149). The moral based theme has led some to believe...

Literature

...Poetry, prose, sonnets, drama, plays, short stories and novels are concepts that first came to my mind when I think in the question “What is literature?” The definition of literature has change over time. The only thing that is certain about the meaning of literature is that the definition will change. The concepts about what is literature about also change over time. In order to get a clear understanding of exactly what literature is, first we need to know its definition. According to the Merriam-Webster, literature is defined by “the body of written works produced in a particular language, country, or age; the body of writings on a particular subject: printed matter.”  Literature has to do with letters, but some people often think that literature is only one thing, not knowing that it is composed by several elements that we use every day. These important elements include poems, prose, sonnets, drama, plays, short stories and novels. Poetry is created from the soul. It comes from your emotions and it needs every piece of creativity inside you. It has been called the art of “saying the unsayable” because trough this you can express your feelings with no limit, and nobody can tell you that is wrong. If you make a poem and you think it is not good enough, well it is no good. You as the author or the reader, can only judge if it is good or but for you but maybe for some one else it is the opposite as it is for you. A good place to start when looking back at how poetry...
