Life Needed

...In the story “The Moon and Sixpence”, the main character named Charles Strickland sacrificed everyone and everything just to follow his inner vision, which is to paint. He does not care about society as well as material things; he just lives for ideas and is indifferent to everything else. As a man of social strings attached, he is the heartless, selfish and irresponsible one but as an artist, he is surely the great, brave and devoted one. To begin with, Charles Strickland is the heartless, selfish and irresponsible person as far as an ordinary person is concerned. The story, as it is told, Strickland is “worthy member of society, a good husband and father, an honest broker”. However, one day in a natural movement of absolute freedom, he just leaves. Afterwards, in meeting after meeting with the narrator, Strickland proves himself to be nothing else but empty of normal response “Then, what in God’s name have you left her for?” “I want to paint” He just “want to paint”, which is an extremely mild way of putting that he needs to madly pursue a genius demon inside of him. He merely repeats “I’ve got to paint” until finally he is confronted with “you are a most absolute cab” to which he replies “Now that you’ve got that off your chest, let’s go and have dinner”. His dryness makes you laugh. But then you realize that he is seriously empty and the ordinary emotions turn to sadness and then disgust for him. He is absolutely indifferent and inhumane. He thinks that he has...

Euthanasia

...euthanasia morally justifiable? What is euthanasia? According to J. Gay-Williams euthanasia is taking a human life, either one’s own or that of another, the life being taken is believed to be suffering from some disease or injury from which recovery cannot reasonably be expected. These actions must be deliberate and intentional. J. Gay-Williams believes that euthanasia is not morally justifiable. Williams gives three main reasons to justify why he believes that euthanasia is not morally justifiable. He argues that euthanasia is not natural, works against self-interest, and it has practical effects. He believes that euthanasia is not natural. he also explains passive euthanasia which he believes is not euthanasia. Passive euthanasia is not giving someone their needed medicine or not giving someone their needed medicine. He feels that euthanasia is unnatural because it goes against our natural goal of survival. He feels that by ending a life that we do not know what will happen in the end is against God. Williams also says that euthanasia sets us against our own dignity. It takes away our dignity because instead of fighting we are giving up and seeking an end to the battle. Williams feels that euthanasia works against our self- interest. He feels that death is the end and allowing euthanasia to be practiced goes against our self- interest. Using euthanasia as an outlet from life can be wrong because people are wrongly diagnosed daily and someone could believe they are not going...

Indian Cultural Case Study

...Case Study Care Plan Strategies: Shanti   Care Plan Strategies: Shanti Shanti’s story describes the death and dying process of a 63 year old Indian woman with breast cancer and metastasis. She had lived in the United States for 32 years and both her and her family still strictly followed their Hindu beliefs and traditions. Shanti knew she was ill but not her diagnosis or prognosis. She was in constant pain and suffered from anorexia, weight loss, and digestive problems. Her religious and cultural beliefs were that all that happened in this life was the result of her past life and that her next life would be determined by her actions in this life. To Shanti the pain she was suffering was given to her by the gods and relief from her pain would produce bad karma and result in negative consequences in her next life (Gefland, Raspa, & Briller, 2005, pp 177-178). Because of her beliefs Shanti and her family had chosen not to know her diagnosis or prognosis which created multiple dilemmas in planning hospice care for the patient. After consulting their legal team and ethics committee hospice was able to honor the patient’s wishes and provide services. For the purpose of this paper the author with describe a care plan developed for the care of Shanti that respects the patient’s cultural and religious beliefs but still provides quality care. The care plan includes communication between staff, the patient, and family, treatments that align with the patient’s cultural and...

Why Humans Search For Water On New Planets Essay

...order for living organisms to survive in those planets, there needs to be sources of water to sustain life on those planets. If humans can find water on a different planet, then they could make the claim that life could already be on these planets, or that life can be sustained on these planets. My evidence is that in order for life to be sustained on a planet, this planet must contain the six most common elements needed for life, known as SPONCH. SPONCH stands for Sulfur, Phospherous, Oxygen, Nitrogen, Carbon, and Hydrogen. Hydrogen as well as Oxygen are both required in order for water molecules to be formed, which means that these six elements should be found and attainable on these planets in order for them to be very sustainable for any forms of life to be able to actually live on...

Life and Something

...Life and death or death during life? Either or, we are unable to escape it or deny it, it is the one inevitable on the planet. Birth is another. Everything in between seems trivial now that I have become a mother. Sure there are joys and sorrows, successes and failures, but it is life and death that dictate our lives completely. They are punctuation marks. They complete the sentence. Poets and storytellers alike have glamorized both, making them seem almost mundane and minute. To the people wrapped up in the consequences of life and death, they are anything but. My realization of this came during the early morning hours of May 6th. Just like every other morning, my infant son woke up wanting to be fed. While tending to him, I heard my phone ring from the next room. I ran into the room and turned it off, because the end result of caring for my son was peace and quiet and far more important than whomever was on the other end of the phone. No sooner than I silenced it; it rang a second time. I answered, thinking that the person on the other end was trying to reach me for something more important than I had first thought. At first, I couldn’t fathom what I was hearing on the other end of that phone. I couldn’t let it materialize into an actual sentence. I dropped my head down and cried and screamed and cried like my infant son would have if he needed changing. It was in response to the news coming over the line. My heart hurt with pain, grief, agony. I knew that when...

Watering the Wasteland

...Watering the Waste Land In T.S. Eliot’s poem, The Waste Land, he compares the life of a modern man to a “waste land” in need of rebirth and recovery. Richard Schwartz, a scholar of T.S. Eliot’s work, concluded that, “Perhaps one meets this condition due to the lack of water, which becomes symbolic of the lack of hope Eliot had in the state of the world at this time” (Schwartz).  While not spelled out in black and white to the reader, one cannot miss the constant, conflicting theme of both the life giving and the destructive attributes that water plays in The Waste Land.  Eliot writes this poem as if it was water itself: free flowing with constant change. In the first section of the poem, “The Burial of the Dead”, the poet describes the parched land to be lifeless and arid. The trees are dead, the ground is dry, and the rocks are desolate. Overall, the setting is austere. It is at this point that Eliot brings in the dual representation of water. He writes, “the dry stone no sound of water [makes]” (Eliot). By referring to Moses getting water from the rocks in scriptural times, Eliot emphasizes the lack of water in the land both spiritually and physically. Here the reader senses Eliot’s overall lack of hope. T.S. Eliot uses water as a symbol of life. Without it one’s whole world would be a “waste land”. It categorizes water as life giving fuel for fertile ground and the opportunity for new growth. The rain at the end of the poem signifies the start of a new beginning and the washing...

...started to look at Chapman Hostice’s website I started to think how fragile life is. Reading about how we are going to interact with patients that have a terminal illness and where given a life expectancy of six months is somewhat difficult to process. I think we all hope that, if God permits, we will grow old and then finally rest in peace until God’s second coming, but one of my fears regarding this subject is getting to my first service learning and finding out the patient I will be helping is my age or younger. How am I going to react to that? Talking from a religious point of view, why did God decide a child or young adult should leave this earth so early? And trying to look at it from another lens, what bad karma or situation was this person in that he or she now faces a terminal illness? I hope that during my service at Chapman Hostice I put away any kind of awkward doubts and just focus on the patient. I am willing to provide any service needed in order to better the remaining quality of life for the individual or group of people I will be serving. Maybe if I was in a similar situation, I would greatly appreciate a total stranger taking time of his or her life to help me live a good life. As we were told during orientation, patients are not afraid of dying but rather fear pain and any other burden that the dying process entails. I hope this not only turns into a learning experience but rather a life-changing...
