Primary and Backup Thinking Styles
My primary personal thinking style is the Achievement Style, which is one of the constructive styles. Constructive Styles pertain to self-enhancing behaviors in ways of thinking, which determine a person’s level of satisfaction. These styles also pertain to the capability of effectively working with people, building healthy relationships, and being proficient at the accomplishment of tasks.
In particular, the Achievement Style of thinking pertains to the ability and the desire to achieve personal goals and take on challenging tasks. This style also carries with it the belief that one’s effort can make a difference.
I agree with this result as I believe myself to be a goal-oriented person. The Achievement Style of thinking has manifested in my life in that I always strive to improve myself and increase my knowledge as I pursue my master’s degree. In addition, I always strive to do well in my job where I try to exceed what’s expected of me and I try to stay focused on the task at hand while I’m at work. Specifically, as a Senior Case Technician for the Social Security Administration (SSA), I manage to complete more than 50-70 cases every month when the requirement is to complete only 30 cases. I also always try to complete my school requirements even before the deadline and strive to provide more than what’s required.
As well, in conformance to the general characteristics of constructive styles of thinking, I greatly value my relationships with others whether they are professional or personal in nature. Relationships have often proven to be reciprocal, and I have been very blessed to have met many good people in my life. I also have good interpersonal and

Lifestyles Inventory

...Shenika Poindexter MGT 591 LSI exercise January 20, 2013 The lifestyles inventory is a survey of questions that help us gain an insight into our own personality and what types of behaviors we output to others. The LSI helps us look at the positive and negative qualities of our own personalities and ways to improve upon them. Upon the findings of my LSI self description a few strengths were discovered along with a few weaknesses. Based on the survey that was taken the highest scored areas were affiliative, self actualizing and humanistic-encouraging. However the areas that were scored the lowest were approval, avoidance, and dependent. The highest I scored is a 93 on affiliative leadership style. This falls on the 2:00 mark of the model. This type of leadership style promotes harmony among his or her followers and helps solve any conflict issues. This type of leader also builds teams and make sure that their followers fell connected to each other. And I tend to praise my followers, however my poor performances tend to go unchecked. The next one I scored high on is conventional, this falls on the 4:00 mark on the model. On the conventional side of me, I tend to be very respectful of others. I do however like to be recognized by my superiors for my hard work. I avoid conflict because I don’t like chaos. I love to suggest new ideas to see if things could go a lot smoother for others. Another high point was that I scored high on the self actualization 12:00 slot of the...

Lifestyle Inventory

...Completing the Life Styles Inventory (LSI) survey has taught me so much about myself. Some things I already knew and some things actually came as a surprise, which makes me want to reevaluate my life. On the Life Styles Inventory survey, I scored extremely high, in fact in the 99th percentile on the “Avoidance”, “Oppositional”, and “Power” styles of life. Based on the explanations, I would have to agree with them all. Starting with avoidance, as far back as I could remember, I have always been the type to take minimal risks and remove myself from threatening situations. I have a shield up which I feel prevents others from seeing the real me and I use that shield as a defense mechanism to avoid disappointment, hurt and unrealistic expectations from others. Avoidance can be good or bad to some extinct. I say it is bad because I avoid more situations than I actually face. I am afraid of the unknown so it is easy for me to “not open Pandora’s box” while others are risk takers and take chances; I could be missing out on something great. I have a great respect for those that take risk, they are not afraid to fail because at least they can say they tried. That could ultimately mean, the more risk, the better chances someone would have at a good outcome because they are essentially learning from trial and error. As with my oppositional trait, this one makes me rethink some of the things that I do because I do in fact, place a lot of emphasis on minor flaws which in a way ties into...

Lifestyles Inventory

...Life Styles Inventory The 12 Life Styles 9/14/2013 Devry and Keller School of Management MGMT591 Leadership and Org. Behavior-Professor Carr I have realized I have changed tremendously over the years and certain life events can shape the way you think or the way you will evolve. This can be anywhere from getting over a breakup, the stress of work/school, or the death of a close loved one. For the most part, I think I am an outgoing person with a strong work ethic and try to be positive to reach my long term goals and not let the little bumps in the road get me off track. In this week’s assignment, we were assigned to go through and fill out the “life styles inventory which focuses on constructive, passive/defensive, and aggressive/defensive styles. At first, I was a little apprehensive about going through a self-assessment because I feel that I know myself pretty well, but after getting the results, some of the scores are different than what I initially expected. The three different styles I would like to focus on in this paper have to deal with interaction of people, accomplishing tasks, and task related activities. After taking the LSI survey and examining the circumplex slices, oppositional was the highest on the percentile scoring scale and falls under the defensive/aggressive scale. Oppositional style, which I scored an 84 on, is characterized by a detachment from your close friends and family, having a negative outlook on life, and having a sarcastic sense...

Lifestyles Inventory: Personal Descripton

...Life Styles Inventory (LSI): Self Description May 8, 2012 Personal Thinking Styles The key to recognizing individual thinking style for most people can sometimes be found right on the surface. Consider the way in which a person might be described or referred to. For me that includes statements such as: • She’s a people person. • We never thought of that before. That’s a great idea now put together a strategy. • She will make sure everyone on the team has an opportunity to participate. • Don’t worry. She’ll cross the T’s and dot the I’s. Each of these phrases are things I’ve heard consistently over the years so when I completed the Life Styles Inventory (LSI) survey I was not surprised to receive my highest level scores in the Constructive Styles: Humanistic-Encouraging (99 percentile), Affiliative (99 percentile), Achievement (80 percentile) and Self-Actualizing (80 percentile). But what was surprising to me was that I received my third highest score and my fifth highest score in the Aggressive/Defensive Styles: Oppositional (84 percentile) and Power (79 percentile). What was visually intriguing is the fact that my two highest level Constructive Styles (Humanistic-Encouraging and Affiliative) are direct opposites of my influencing Aggressive/Defensive Styles (Oppositional and Power). What does all of this mean and how does it matter? The assessment seemed pretty accurate and it helps me to better understand why I approach everything in the...

Lifestyles Inventory Lsi Paper

...The Life Styles Inventory™ (LSI) Paper MGMT 591 Leadership and Organizational Behavior   Introduction The Life Styles Inventory™ (LSI) presents a series of questions in the areas of personal satisfaction, stress, effectiveness and quality of interpersonal relationships and then collates participant responses into a circumplex identifying 12 specific patterns or styles of thinking, behaving and interacting on a personal, management and leadership level--representing the essence of an individual's effectiveness. The circumplex provides a visual description of an individual's thinking and behaviour and then compares results with those of other individuals having taken the inventory in order to create self-awareness of strengths and weakness in order to create awareness of constructive behaviour. The norming base for the LSI represents nearly 10,000 individuals from various organizations, ages, levels of education and from both genders. The results plotted on the circumplex a divided into areas defined by higher order and lower order needs of satisfaction and security; and task-centered and people-centered orientations. Within these spheres are 12 separate styles (approval, conventional, dependent, avoidance, oppositional, power, competitive, perfectionistic, achievement, self-actualizing, humanistic-encouraging, and affiliative) which are subsequently grouped into three specific patterns (achievement/dependent; self-actualizing/avoidance; humanistic-encouraging/oppositional;...

Life Styles Inventory

...After taking the Life Styles Inventory survey, my results indicated the Passive /Defensive styles which represent self-protecting thinking and behavior promoting the fulfillment of security needs through interactions with people, as the primary personal thinking style. There are four styles under that heading, including Approval, Dependent, Conventional and Avoidance. According to the approval style, one is likely to seek approval from others, feel the need to be liked by everyone and think in terms of what others think instead of forming its own thoughts. On the other hand, under dependent style, you tend to be a good follower by seeking help from others or doing what is expected from them. Being eager to please and getting easily influenced by friends and family are also signs of the dependency style. A person closely relating to the conventional style is very respectful to others, is highly reliable and steady along with believing in rules more than ideas itself. Lastly, avoidance style takes on being uneasy, self-depreciative and lacks self-confidence. Personally, some of the pointers from these brief styles I mentioned above relate to me on a high level. I feel the need to seek approval from others and I am not dependent on my friends as such but my behavior weighs heavy on how people surroundings are behaving with me. I’ve realized, often times when I am discussing my daily routine with a close friend, I talk about my colleagues or other friends that I’ve interacted...

The Medicine Wheel

...The Medicine Wheel: A Guide to Achieving Personal Goals in Life One of the important subjects that is of great interest in Aboriginal Studies is the Medicine Wheel; how it is used as a guide for personal decision making and actions through life, particularly to achieving our personal goals. What the Medicine Wheel is all about and how it helps guide us to a more fulfilling life is a question most of us wonder. The Medicine Wheel is a crucial element of First Nation’s culture. It is a powerful symbol of the aboriginal people’s spirituality. It is the essence of their way of life, a key to understanding the universe, and a guide in which an individual can reach wholeness. It provides framework for growth and direction in one’s life (Roberts, Harper, Bull, & Heideman-Provost, 1998). “The Medicine Wheel symbolizes the interconnection of all life, the various cycles of nature, and how life represents a circular journey” (Traditional Aboriginal Medicine, 2009). The Medicine Wheel as a visual symbol is an effective tool for personal development (Native American Medicine Wheel, 2011). Based on my learning from the class discussions and presentations, I found this project very interesting and inspiring. I found it to be an important guide towards attaining success. In this paper is my vision of what a medicine wheel would be like and how I connect the medicine wheel ideas to my outlook, and to realizing my goals in life. ...

Consumer Insights

...Consumer Insights 1-1 1. Lifestyles centers allow the consumer to peruse the items available for sale in a relaxed setting. Consumers are able to stop and grab a bite to eat or go to a movie during their shopping excursion. The consumer is also able to take the items purchased home on the same day instead of waiting for it to be shipped. 2. Lifestyle centers are not able to house the same large number of shops that a traditional mall is able too. The consumer is limited to a small number of stores to make purchases. If the consumer wishes to visit a specific store, this is not an issue. However, when it comes to browsing several stores the product variability will not be the same as in a traditional mall. Also, during inclement weather, the outdoor mall setting will not be optimal. A consumer will be less willing to browse store to store when the weather is not ideal. A traditional mall, however, protects the consumer from the weather and promises the ideal shopping climate every time. 3. I am not sure what a virtual lifestyle center would look like. I am sure it would be possible to create because online anything is possible. However, it appears that one of the major attractions to a lifestyle center is the ability to stop for a coffee or see a movie and this does not seem feasible online. If one were created, I would imagine it would offer a small variety of stores set up to allow the consumer easy shopping among them all. Perhaps one checkout procedure would...

She has all the characteristics and has been raised into the most appropriate environment for reaching the actual performance, no matter the operating field. She is brilliantly smart, highly innovative and very ambitious. Her genius was the main reason for her to start this business and do it so well. However, there are many other reasons, usualy small things which can, to a certain time, change somebody’s life completely. Her fear for needles and blood taking was the reason for her to start thinking about a revolutionary way of having blood tests in an easier, faster and as reliable as the standard procedure is. Her genius combined with great courage to give up the college education and to start the business created the conditions for her to become a truly leader, although, as stated before, she is a natural born leader, characteristic obvious since she was a child and she stated that she will do something special . As I can deduct based on limited informations about her, I can see her pretty similar to Steve...

Urban Life

...In our modern urban lifestyle, we have lost our sense of community. We need to return to a simpler way of life. Discuss. Following the development of technology, the quality of life becomes better off. It is attractive enough to live in cities, because people can enjoy a lot of convenient facilities. However, some people believe that many people do not know their neighbours and the sense of community has been lost with the increasing number of people in cities. In this essay the effect of the modern urban lifestyle in cities will be discussed. Nowadays, many people tend to live in cities for different reasons. They move into cities mainly for work. Because they leave early in the morning and come back home late in the evening. They do not want to waste their time on a train or bus. If they live in cities, they do not need to wake up early to take a train or bus. Furthermore, living in cities means that they can easily find places or facilities to fill their every need in the urban life, which is valued in the individual lifestyle rather than the sense of community. On the other hand, many people seem to be more isolated than ever before. Because of focusing on the individual lifestyle in modern time, it is hard to have an opportunity to make a deep relationship with people living around. People do not usually know what happens to their neighbours. Humans are social creatures that cannot be independent of others. As a result, even if there are a lot of convenient places...

Code of the Streets

...1 The book Code of the Street is a book about urban city life in Philadelphia, PA, for African Americans and how unwritten laws are vital to abide and obtain in order to survive. In this book, Elijah Anderson captivates the reader’s attention by presenting extensive research on how Philadelphia natives adopt the laws of the code of the street and how and when to use these codes of survival. He provides several interviews with many different people who are either forced to enter the code of the street or who are the enforcers. Nonetheless, all are victims because the code is a factor in everybody’s life. As I read this book, I noticed how the code of the street could be a good thing and also a bad thing. I say a good thing because, first and foremost, no one wants to be disrespected and I saw how many of the characters adopted this role in the street life to gain respect and to not be fearful and to be viewed as a “tough” guy. I also saw adopting the code of the street as a bad thing because I saw that there were decent people who were forced to engage in the negativity that the street produced on a daily basis. I saw how the good turned into bad while the bad either were campaigning to be badder or campaigning to make something of themselves. You would think that trying to better your life, especially coming from the ghetto, would be two thumbs up but in the city of Philadelphia, as Anderson described, was a hard obstacle to overcome. Hate, jealousy and envy were the dominant...
