Lifting Up While Helping Out
I believe that ***** could benefit from a program that allows people in need to help other people in need. This program would be run by people who are not only needing help, but are helping others who are in need themselves.
Driving through St. James on any morning when school is in session you are sure to see children walking. Some walk with their parents, some walk alone. One might think that the reason for walking comes from a desire for fresh air or exercise, but the observant passerby will notice that these same people are walking, regardless of the weather. It may be pouring down rain or below freezing temperatures, and you will surely see the same familiar faces, walking to school, cold and wet.
Strike up a conversation with the carhop at Sonic and you will soon find that she is a widower trying to raise her mentally-handicapped son alone. She lives in the motel down the road because she doesn’t have enough money for a car or for the deposits needed to get into a rental property. She will tell you that she is slowly sinking and knows not what to do.
I have heard the same desperation, over and over, throughout the years. All one needs to do is take the time to care about another human. Take the time to ask and you will hear their stories and feel their desperation.
The program I would like to introduce would take these same people who so desperately need help and pair them up with others who also need help. Almost like a bartering system: I help you get your kids to school and you help me do my laundry. This program would get people the help they need without them feeling indebted or 'lower class' simply because they need help. It would also focus on the gifts, talents and resources that each person has. It is imperative that this program build people up emotionally so that they are able to go out and make a change in not only their lives, but in their world.
I believe that by implementing a program where people in need are able to help people in need there will not only be changes seen in the community, but changes seen in families. When a person is able to feel valuable and needed, they will change for the better. You will see a wilted plant begin to stand tall, and soon a beautiful bloom will emerge.
