Exposition – At the introduction it tells the characters Guy, Lili, and Little Guy that live in a poor poverty-stricken village in Haiti. Little Guy has received a part in a play.
Rising Action – Guy has a strong desire to start life over to find a way to have a better life for himself and his family.
Climax/Turning point – Little Guy see his father in the hot air balloon in the sky.
Falling action – Guy decides to take his own life as he falls out of the hot air balloon to his death.
Conclusion – Not much of a conclusion other than Lili accepting her husband’s death.

The stories setting is in Haiti, a one room hut, in a very poor village.
4. Give an example of figurative language from this story.
The hot air balloon is symbolic to the story as the fire lights the balloon Guy seems to have a fire inside of him. He wants more out of life and for his family. As he steals the air balloon in his desire freedom and a better place to live. Even when Guy jumps for the balloon the balloon still continues on its way. I think this shows that no matter what happens or the circumstances life goes on.
5. Identify any two of the following from this story (an allusion, irony or verbal irony, personification, simile or metaphor)
Irony - Guy has been without work for 6 months but has finally gained work in the sugar mill. This would seem to make things better for Guy but he still was depressed and chose to take his own life.
Metaphor – Fire is used to light the hot air balloon and make it fly. Guy has a fire burning in his sole from all the anger, failures and frustration building up from his life he feels he has failed at. We can relate to fire as burning desire to want what we do not
