There are many different types of skin disorders that can affect anyone. There are rare, common and life threatening disorders or conditions. There is a skin disorder called Lamellar Ichthyosis, (LI), it is a rare genetic skin condition that affects about 1 in 100,000 individuals in the United States. It’s when the skin develops normally, but it doesn’t shred like it’s supposed to, casuing thick, tight, scaly skin. There are two different types of LI: Limited lamellar ichthyosis and Erythrodermic lamellar ichthyosis. Lamellar Ichthyosis is an “autosomal recessive” condition which means that the two parents can have normal skin but both carry the gene. The first big flag is when the baby is born, they are born with a clear membrane around them. They often call them “collodion babies”, referring to the collodion or clear membrane around them. Other common red flags that a baby has Lamellar Ichthyosis, is that they often have reddish dark, cracked, stretched skin underneath the collodion membrane. There are normally issues with water loss, temperature regulation, and secondary infections. Other symptoms and signals that will show later in life is the restriction of skin around the eyelids, which can cause trouble for the person to shut their eyes. In some cases, the skin is pulled so tightly that the eyelids go outwards, which can cause painful irritations around and inside of the eye. Most physicians recommend having plastic surgery because if it’s left untreated, it can cause damage to the cornea which possibly in the future cause lost or impaired vision. Lamellar Ichthyosis can also cause thin hair or hair loss because the skin on their scalp so thick, and scaly. Only one can be life threatening and the others just aren’t that pleasant to have and manage. The first one is stretched, tight skin that form around the fingers and toes which can stop normal blood flow to the tips of the fingers and toes. This is called constriction bands, even though it's very rare, it's not impossible to develop. Next, because of the serious plate like scaling and the way it looks around the eyes, it can cause harsh psychological issues to the child as well to the parent. The way society views and treats people with Lamellar Ichthyosis is really hard to cope with. This mostly stems from ignorance and curiosity but the two hardest parts of life is starting school and the teenage years. There is staring and teasing that will come about. Fortunately, there is many people with severe LI and live to some extent normal lives and learn and deal how to live with this skin condition. However, this takes a lot of family support and a substantial, mighty personality. Last but not least, the life threatening obstacle of Lamellar Ichthyosis. Because of the thickness of the skin and plate-scale like of the skin, it restrains normal sweating so rigorous exercising or a hot day can become dangerous causing
