Possible Siblings

Hum 102
Galen College of Nursing
Omar Rodriguez, MA

Possible Siblings A reader can interpret May Swenson's poem, "All That Time", in different ways. May Swenson's poem is a Septet, which consists of a 7 line stanza. When read this poem gives the impression that it is about two lovers who over time withstand changes that one partner goes through, and the other remains standing strong throughout time. This poem clearly provides an image of two siblings and is very specific in describing the relationship between the two. Although the poem does seem to take on a romantic form, some readers believe that this may be a poem about a brother and a sister. The narrator of the poem is the author, and she starts with line one, she states "I saw two trees embracing". In this line the reader may be feeling the emotion of a romantic stance. It speaks of an embrace, but doesn't mention what kind of embrace. Maybe it's a family embrace, instead of the romantic embrace that some readers think. In line five, she states, "Since their twin youth, maybe she had been pulling him toward her all that time". This line clearly states that they have been together since their youth, and possibly twins or are in close age of each other. She was pulling him toward her, as if to protect him with her strong stance. Some readers feel that it is highly impossible that two lovers would be together since their twin youth. In line eleven, she states, "And where their tops tangled it looked like he was crying on her shoulder". In this line she shows that the brother was the weaker of the two. In siblings there is always one that stands stronger than the other. The one who holds the family together long after the parents have passed one. The sister was merely showing her protective support against a weaker sibling by offering her shoulder. In line nine, the narrator describes him as the weaker of the two, giving the description of , "He was the thin, dry, insecure one, the most wind-warped, you could see". Again that shows
Possible Siblings that he is the one who has been altered over time, that has left him the weaker one. Lines fourteen through nineteen, it describes how he was crying on her shoulder, and she remained strong, even though his weakness seem to want to pull her down with him. Some readers may feel as though he was trying to make her change, and weaken her in when lines fourteen through line eighteen, "On the other hand, maybe he had been trying to weaken her, break her, or at least make her bend over backwards for him". These lines describe not him trying to change her and force her to bend for him, but it describes how as a sister was willing to do what she had too, to protect him. Line twenty states, "And all the time she was standing up to him the best she could", that clearly shows that she remained the rock in the relationship, and despite the weakness he brought to her by having to lean on her, she remained strong for him. Just as a sibling would protect, and remain strong for the siblings who needed that kind of strength. He seems to be giving up and it was wearing on his body leaving him worn, and he came to her for the support of a loved one. She offered that by standing strong against him. As the narrator states in line twenty-five through twenty-eight, "But he had been willing to change himself - even if it was for the worse - all that time", she is stating that he in a sense seems to be giving in to whatever seems to making him weak, and he comes to her for support. In line twenty-three and twenty-four she states that she was too stubborn to allow him to sink without first giving him the support he so needed from his stronger sister, "She was the most stubborn, the straightest one, that's a fact". The narrator is stating that she wouldn't allow him to crumble and give up, and she was being stubborn in holding him up, even when he couldn't hold himself up.

Possible Siblings In the final stanza, lines twenty-nine through thirty three it clearly states how strong their relationship as siblings are ,"At the top they looked like on tree, where they were embracing. It was plain they'd be always together. Too late now to part". She embraced him while entangling herself around her brother, as if to always protect him from the world, and possibly from himself. The last two lines, line thirty-four and thirty-five states, "When the wind blew, you could hear them rubbing them rubbing on each other". These last two lines shows how strong their connection as brother and sister really was. All that time since young siblings, and all that they had weathered over the years, never broke them down, but left them as strong as one.

...Task 310.12 Sole Proprietorship A sole proprietorship is an unincorporated business with a single owner that deals with personal income tax from profits of the business. A key disadvantage of a sole proprietorship as an organizational form is that it does not create another legal entity, making the sole proprietor responsible for all debts incurred. A key advantage to becoming a sole proprietor is startup is usually easy and all the profits that are incurred by a single owner (“Sole Proprietorship Definition | Investopedia”, n.d.). Liability A sole proprietorship has possible huge pitfalls by operating with almost no protection to the proprietor’s personal liability. In other business forms like corporations and limited liability corporations a legal entity is created to protect the personal assets of owner. In the case of defaulting, creditors are able to collect debt at a business asset level and a personal asset level creating a huge risk for a sole proprietor (Larson, 2004). Income Taxes A sole proprietorship taxes are treated as one income of the sole proprietor. This means that all income, business bank accounts, and personal account must be claimed in an income tax return of the sole proprietor. This is a huge disadvantage since you are unable to defer any income to the next year (Larson, 2004). Longevity or Continuity A sole proprietorship life span is short and will always have an expiration date at some point. The organization will come to an end once...

...So Ching Ashley SID: 1007623943 ENG3250 Other Literatures in English Paper Assignment 2 December 6, 2010. Orientalism in M. Butterfly: a Struggle from Gender Identity to Political Balance Long before Song Liling made her debut as M. Butterfly on stage, there was a woman called Cho-cho-san, playing Madama Butterfly with the fullest of her life. M. Butterfly’s counterpart Madama Butterfly presents readers Cho-cho-san, a pitiful and submissive Oriental Butterfly. Cho-cho-san’s character traits fit in almost every single aspect of the ideal of Oriental women, for instance, Cho-cho-san is a geisha, an exotic representation of Japanese women in the eyes of westerners, Cho-cho-san eventually dies of seppuku, which is the Japanese ritual suicide by disembowelment, and her ultimate sacrifice of her everything from her religion to her very life. The attributes of Cho-cho-san are not exclusive to this character only but imposed on all Asian women. The western presupposition of some certain fixed and bounded Asian attributes defines the identity of Asian women and thus, creates an image of the sacrificial and submissive Oriental women. Moreover, the historical backgrounds of Hwang’s Butterfly and Puccini’s Butterfly are, in fact, the extension of gender tension to international power struggle. Cho-cho-san’s love story happens in the Meiji Period in which Japan first opened its door to foreigners; while Gallimard and Song Liling begins having an affair in the 1960s, in the midst...

World Lit Paper

...Nick Fox Professor Farr World Lit 11/3/11 Medea: A Piece in History Greek culture and theater provide many examples of the human condition as well as human nature. Among the authors best known from this time are Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Aristophanes. Euripides’s works have outlasted many of his contemporaries. In his play Medea, Euripides uses Medea’s character as a metaphor for women’s changing roles their taking a stand, their breaking the status quo hence overcoming the mandates of Greek culture. The play Medea by Euripides first appears in 431 B.C., the same year that the Peloponnesian war begins. Athens, ruled by Pericles from 447- 341 B.C. always made large amounts of money available for the festivals that include dramatic productions. Since theater was such an important part of the Athenian’s life, of course, it was at the center of the social and political facets as well. Thousands upon thousands of people would come to watch these productions. The festivals were very competitive, like a contest, and the results are permanently placed in the public records. Medea is now known as one of Euripides’ most famous plays, though it isn’t highly regarded in the history of the festival competitions mainly because of how the play contradicted the normal values of female’s roles in the Greek society. Women in Greek society have basically no rights at all. It was the male or husband that had all the rights in the family (Lawall 693). Few women in ancient Athens could...

World Lit Paper

...Ruth Schambeau 7/8/13 When one thinks of a love song, they think of the narrator gushing about their object of affection, their one true love. The narrator is supposed to go on and on about how in love they are and how all they think about is that one and only person. Some love songs are sad and the narrator ends up heartbroken and alone and other times they have a “happily ever after” ending similar to those in fairytales. Most of the time, love songs live up to their name and are about purely about love. In T.S. Eliot’s “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock,” some of these expectations are anticipated to make their way in to the poem in some way or another, yet that is not the case; it is more the lament of a self-conscious man who lives with fear and uncertainty about himself and women. Whilst it may seem Prufrock is incapable of making an emotional connection with any female; it would seem a woman aggressive enough to get him out of his shell, yet gentle enough to deal with his sensitivity and fear would make the perfect match for him. We cannot imagine that any woman would listen to any love song by Prufrock, any more than they would find his name or his person attractive. A man named J. Alfred Prufrock could hardly be expected to sing a love song. "J. Alfred Prufrock" indicates his formality; he is overeducated, eloquent, neurotic, and emotionally damaged. He is a man stricken with feelings of isolation and incapability for decisive action. Prufrock laments the lost opportunities...

...Advantages of using Paper Charcoal 1. Concentrated. Since Paper Charcoals are created from compressing combustible material such as paper, it is denser, harder, and more compact compared to other charcoals. 2. Slow-burning. The compression process allows the paper charcoal to burn for a lot longer than if it was loose in its original form. 3. More efficient. Along with the compactness of the paper charcoal is the increase in heating value. This greater efficiency can be attributed to their low moisture and density. 4. Availability. Paper is the main component in producing this product. So where do we get this paper? Look around you, and there are loads of paper materials here, there, and everywhere. 5. Easily stored. Nicholas Carr, was a writer who always loved getting caught up in books and researching information. Things have changed though. He has noticed that he loses concentration while reading and finds himself forcing his attention back to the book just after three pages. Carr believes there is one thing to blame, the internet. People are now getting lazier and only want their questions answered and that’s it. So what are these positive and negative consequences of exclusive reliance on electronics, specifically the internets information in general. I. Critical Thinking One consequence that we see of digital text rather than printed text is in the way it effects our critical thinking. The ways we use technologies develop habits of mind. Immigrant Lit Final Paper

...Professor Wecker HUM 357O.O - Immigrant Literature They built the Great Wall of China, didn’t they? When people hear about the Great Wall, they will typically think about the Great Wall of China. However, what we will talk about here is not the Great Wall of China, initially built more than two thousand years ago. Rather we will talk about the critical role Chinese immigrant laborers played here in the United States one hundred and fifty years ago, in building the first transcontinental railroad. The linking of the Atlantic east coast with the Pacific west coast by this Great Iron Trail fundamentally transformed the United States, and propelled into the greatest power in human history. When Leland Stanford and Thomas C. Durant, on May 10, 1869 (Williams 264), drove down that ceremonial last spike, a spike made of California gold, on the transcontinental railroad at the Promontory Summit, Utah, the history of the United States, and with it the history of this world, was forever changed.  Among the engraving on 3 sides of the spike was the invocation “… May God continue the unity of our country as this railroad unites the two great oceans of the world…” (Williams 266). Before that very moment, eight Chinese men, making the final preparation for the last spike of that historical railroad, had laid the final pair of rails. In the midst of fifteen hundred spectators of “every color, creed and nationality” (Williams 264), they appeared to be but a small and insignificant...

How My Memoir Changed My Life

...ranged from how poetry changed my life and how they continue to, the night my brother was hospitalized, how school was a constant in my life when nothing else would stay, and how a particular poem made me rethink, but alas the spark was lost and I was desperate for a quick fix. You know what I did, I panicked; memoirs bring a heavy rain clouds filled with dread, raining procrastinating and bolts of ideas that flash bright and harshly before disappearing leaving behind a confuddled child. “Due Tuesday.” Ms. Becker’s , my English teacher, voice rang clearly. Oh god, everything I wanted to write about was dull, by now. Ideas and crumbled sheets of college - ruled papers follow me like an honors student’s cry for extra credit. Nothing would stick but the constant rain of dread soaking me to the bone. A light bulb lits up; I should write about my struggle to write a memoir but. “That’s ridiculous” Who said that!? I don’t know maybe it was even me but I heard it echo. Pages, pages are due so soon; what am I going to write about? I really shouldn’t procrastinate on this. Asking other classmates. They have the same struggle, finding no inspiration or tapping into a drying well of muse. I thought of how this is going to be, and I wondered why this was so difficult to do, I didn’t have a clue as to why. So many amazing ideas scratched and tossed away, like an unwanted grade. I wanted to write about poetry, or my friends, or something major in my life and how's it's there twenty four...

Comprehensive Grammar Answer Form

...writing. In fact, the three universities that I have attended in the past have all required me to use the APA style of writing. As I recall my high school years, the APA style of writing also seemed to be a favorite amongst my high school teachers. They all required that term papers be written in APA style as well. This type of writing actually does not differ much from the ones included in the text reading. The text mentioned the APA style of writing several times. In my opinion, it appears to be the most popular style of writing, especially amongst college students. Based on the results of the quizzes, my grammar skills were actually a little better than average. I actually had expected to do better, but I guess my grammar skills are not as good as I thought they were. In any event I feel very confident when it comes to spelling, as I have always been a great speller. Even in grade school, I was a good speller. I learned at a very young age to challenge myself when it comes to spelling. Challenging my-self in that area really paid off as I became older, as I’ve never had a problem with spelling. However, I feel that I need more help with run on sentences and with thought patterns. Though I proof read my paper several times, it’s hard for me to see that I have several run on sentences until after I get my grade back. In general, I feel that my writing is just mediocre. However, I also believe that when it comes to writing, I am my own worst critic. Reason being, I am never...
