A Simple Heart

Trying to figure out how Flaubert wanted readers to view religion in his short story “A Simple Heart” is challenging at times. Felicite has been misunderstood by many regarding her representation of religion. Her innocence is not to be look at as a burden, it allows her to share a good relationship with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit had been reduced to taxidermy as it portrayed as Felicite’s per parrot Loulou. Felicite’s spiritual world had been reduced to something not permanent made the story difficult to evaluate the seriousness in regards to religion. After reevaluating the role Loulou played on Felicite’s life. “A Simple Heart” becomes a spiritual journey. With an open mind it is apparent that Felicite is worthy of sainthood through her dedication to her religion, loved ones and hard work.

Flaubert did not make religion obvious at all times during the story. Felicite was extremely selfless, illiterate maid who devoted most of her life to other people. “Felicite did protect her mistress and the children in the face of a charging bull, even staying in front of the bull until she knew her mistress and the children were safe on the other side of the fence”(1824-25). There were no remarkable measures that are standard in declaring saints but Felicite’s steady faith is enough. Everyone she is close to including her beloved parrot Loulou that she stuffs after its death eventually desert her. This pushes her closer to her faith as it became a replacement for her physical and emotional losses.

Throughout the entire story Flaubert used Loulou as a way for the Holy Spirit to be constantly present. Using a symbol for something so sacred almost hinting at insanity. [Be sure to revise this so that it is a complete thought instead of a sentence fragment. Remember: each sentence needs a main

...There are many issues that today’s teenager has to deal with, and this causes stress. The most frequently cited reason for this stress is school related and often out of the teenager’s control. Teachers assign them “absurd quantities of mostly pointless homework that force students to work a second shift after having spent all day in school” (Kohn “Reconsider Attitudes”). A study done by Mediamark Research Inc. found that 60.2% of teens surveyed are stressed all the time or sometimes, and that 72.4% of the teens surveyed are stressed because they had a lot of school work ("Teens Want to Enjoy" 2-3). American teenagers are not the only ones with school related stress. In a survey done in Hong Kong, students were asked about what stressed them out, and school and standardized testing were the top two answers, with 25 of 40 and 27 of 40 students agreeing that those things stressed them out (“Are Teenagers Too Stressed?” 8). However, fretting about standardized testing isn’t just limited to teenagers in Hong Kong. It stresses American students out so much that it is not uncommon for a student to vomit during testing (Kalish). While these experts and studies have suggested that schoolwork and standardized tests are the specific problems that teens face, some teens might not agree, and it is necessary to find out; for this reason, my survey asks what is stressing teens out. While vomiting during a test is certainly a side effect of stress, there are many others as well. Teens experience...

It will then narrow down to how different marketing techniques can play as an advantage/disadvantage to consumers as well as the companies that implement these strategies and provide success stories of companies that took advantage of this new age. The name that was basically given to advertising through social media websites is viral marketing. A formal definition of this term would be the tactic of creating a process where interested people can market to each other—is therefore emerging as an important means to spread-the-word and stimulate the trial, adoption, and use of products and services (Subramani, 302). ...Literature Review Topic: Is transport, distribution and logistics in mainland China efficient? The distribution, transportation and logistics area of China is considered to be extremely intricate and complex as well as being very competitive. Companies far and wide continue to fight for a share within China as their market rapidly grows from time to time. Their economic growth has seen to have increased in the past years positioning them second to the United States. China’s current physical infrastructure has also been developing quickly over time although executives have realised that operational and regulatory processes have often hindered efficiency. This determines the fact that the logistics systems need to be enhanced and improved immensely therefore the distribution of products and services should be advocated by a reliable transportation system. However, China’s current logistics system has been met with many challenges making it exceedingly difficult. The existing infrastructure has aged over the years making it highly unlikely to meet certain demands, coupled with the lack of personnel and handling equipment. This automatically leads to higher logistics cost. Dekker, N. (2002) states that the proportion of logistics cost to total production cost is estimated at 20-30 per cent in China, compared to only 10 per cent in the developed countries. According to Speece and Kawahara (1995), Chinas railways and shipping were considered insufficient to meet certain standards...

...| Analyzing How Businesses Develop Effective Marketing Strategies on Social Networking Sites Monisha S. Cunningham Mathew Boone Claflin University The impact that social media has had on business communication is nothing short of phenomenal. “Embracing social media is no longer a strategic business option, but a necessity, and a huge opportunity”, wrote Argenti (2011). Since the beginning of the age of technology, the internet has proven to be an effective way for business to communicate, whether it be with buyers, sellers, internal, or external staff. The internet is a gateway of information and a quick way to communicate with many different people simultaneously. Information can be sent to anyone, at any time, and at any place. Not long after the spike in the popularity of the internet came the emergence of social media. Social media generally refers to media used to enable social interaction. Social media usually takes place within a social networking site. As defined by Ellison (2008), social network sites are web-based services that allow individuals to construct a public or semi-public profile within a bounded system, articulate a list of other users with whom they share a connection, and view and converse with their list of connections and those made by others within the system. Since their emergence, social network sites such as MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter have attracted millions of users, many of whom use these sites on a daily basis. Furthermore, it is no...

The program sets forth learning and achievement guidelines for grade K-12 in Virginia’s Public School system. ...Literature Review Sample (note: this is taken from a complete paper and is an excerpt) This present study uses the research conducted by Conroy and Emerson (2004) as a model for investigation. Conroy and Emerson used surveys to elicit ordered responses regarding the acceptability of particular vignettes. These vignettes have been used by other researchers and were based largely on works by Longnecker et. al. (1989), Clark (1996), Fritzsche and Becker, (1982), and Harris (1991). Many studies evaluate the ethical attitudes of females versus males. Most of these studies, more than two thirds, report a significant gender effect. Interestingly, in every case, female participants were reported as being more ethical than males (Albaum and Peterson, 2006). Borkowski and Ugras (1998) completed a meta-analysis of 47 studies and concluded that female students exhibit “stronger ethical attitudes” than men. Beltramini, Peterson, and Kozmetsky (1984) determined that there was a “consistent tendency for the females in the sample to express more concern than the males in the sample, regardless of the issue” (p. 199). Peterson et al. (1991) replicated their previous study and corroborated the earlier findings and suggested that there was a “heightened level of concern” among college students with respect for ethical issues. Not all researchers agree that women in general have a higher ethical attitude than men. Some researchers concluded that men and women make ethical decisions...

...Review of Literature: Deanerys of Game of Thrones as a strong female television character There are some television programs that depict strong, hardworking women that want to prove themselves as equal as men and to show that they are not just women. Women have come a long way in todays society. Many women are now seen as strong, individual human beings that can take care of themselves and show society that they can do anything a man can do, if not better. Women crave equality, showmanship, and management. The television program, Game of Thrones, contains a character names Deanarys, that desires power and respect. She is seen as a mother figure, portrays examples of feminism, and is a character that develops into a strong woman with power. The character is a great example of women that desire to be equals. Female viewers will acknowledge the positivity and feministic lifestyle that the character portrays. The purpose of this review is to survey and overview the concepts of feministic characters on television. Women on television have been slowly transforming from generic, stereotypical women that are hardly a programs lead character. As times have been changing, women have been getting bigger, bolder roles on television programs. Female characters have transformed into women with power and control. Sharp explains that the character Jaime Sommers in the television program, The Bionic Woman, as a “new woman” in the new age of feminism. She continues to explain the character...

...Incidence of Counseling in Obese Adult Patients by Nurse Practitioners in the Primary Care Setting NaliniAnumula, Andrew Lebson, Katherine Wiggins Instructor: Dr. Colleen Carmody NURP 507 Simmons School of Nursing and Health Sciences Incidence of Counseling Obese Adult Patients by Nurse Practitioners in the Primary Care Setting Background Obesity is an increasing epidemic. In the United States, more than 60 million or one in every three adults are obese as defined by Body Mass Index (BMI). Obesity is defined as a BMI greater than or equal to 30 (CDC, 2015). Successful treatment methods have been identified for reducing weight which include increasing physical activity and decreasing caloric intake. Exercise and physical activity have been shown to not only lose weight, but also improve cardiovascular functioning, lower blood pressure, and lower serum cholesterol levels (Porth, 2011, p. 232). Exercise also lowers blood sugar levels, improves insulin response in the body, and can decrease stress and anxiety; the opposite of each has been associated with obesity. A diet low in saturated fat and simple carbohydrates can improve the body’s insulin response, decrease adipose tissue, increase the body’s metabolic functioning ability (Porth, 2011, p. 232) and thereby reduce one’s BMI. Though obesity may be preventable and treatable through diet changes and exercise, reducing the rates is proving to be very difficult (Briscoe & Berry, 2009, p. 164).Professional medical...

It is hypothesized that the role of the educator will have a greater effect on the student than the students past learning experiences. Also, Chidolue (1986) stated teachers’ attitudes towards Biology teaching is one of the major contributors towards explaining the variance in students’ cognitive achievement. While Odubunmi (1986) and Odunsi (1988) were able to confirm that teachers’ attitudes towards Integrated Science teaching affected their students’ attitudes and their ability to learn the subject and Oqunwuyi (2000) found significant causal relationships between the teachers’ attitude and students’ achievement in Integrated Science. The following literature reviews will make an effort to demonstrate and support the hypothesis. In the research article by Prokop, P., Tuncer, G., & Chuda, J. (2007) they address the following questions as a guide for their study. First, what are students’ attitudes towards Biology lessons? Is there any difference between the mean scores of boys and girls on the six dimensions of the Biology attitude questionnaire? Is there any difference between the mean scores of students’ of different age classes (grade levels) on the six dimensions of the Biology attitude questionnaire? Lastly, what...

...Ever since you are of a young age, you are taught to work in groups and how to work in groups because throughout life you will always have to do some type of group work. Rather if it is in the classroom with the leaders of your class at school, in the office with the leaders and upper-level positions of your job, or if it is on an athletic team with all of your teammates you will eventually have to work in groups. This is where the term ‘groupthink’ comes into play. Group think is thinking as a group trying not to force your own individual opinions, biases, and creativity for sakes of the group. A mentality that says the group is more important than my individual self. The research conducted over this topic will give us a better understanding of groupthink and group decision making. This research will also argue and support if groupthink is said to be positive or negative according to many scholars. According to Richard West and Lynn H. Turner in their book called ‘Introducing Communication Theory Analysis and Application’ the definition of groupthink can be defined as: “… a way of deliberating that group members use when their desire for unanimity overrides their motivation to assess all available plans of action” (West & Turner, 2014, pp. 252). Irving Janis the man who coined the term groupthink and has done extensive research over the subject gives a bit of different but similar definition, which is defined as: “a mode of thinking that people engage in when they are deeply...
