Mammadova Aytan 203 A Beauty and the Beast
Once upon a time, as a merchant set off for market, he asked each of his three daughters what she would like as a present on his return. The first daughter wanted a brocade dress, the second a pearl necklace, but the third, whose name was Beauty, the youngest, prettiest and sweetest of them all, said to her father:
-"All I'd like is a rose having been picked specially for me!" (P1-passive -attribute)
After finishing his business, the merchant set off for home (Gerund-time)
However, a sudden storm blew up, and his horse could hardly make headway in the howling gale. Cold and weary, the merchant had lost all hope of reaching an inn when he suddenly noticed a bright light shining in the middle of a wood. (gerund-attribute)
As he drew near, he saw that it was a castle, bathed in light.(p2 attribute)
He thought it advisable that he stay there for a night. (Subj 1)
On reaching the door, he found the door opened (OPC –complex obj)
But though he shouted, nobody came to greet him. Plucking up courage, he went inside, still calling out to attract attention. (gerund-manner)
On a table in the main half ,he saw the dinner already served (OPC-complex obj)
The merchant lingered,with shouting for the owner of the castle.(PAPC-att.circc.)
The merchant waiting for the owner of the house,Became starving and sat down to a hearty meal.(NAPC-time)
It being very late now, the merchant couldn’t resist sleep(NAPC-cause)
When he woke next morning, an unknown hand had placed a mug of steaming coffee and some fruit by his bedside. Breakfast over, he went downstairs to thank his generous host.(NAPC-time)
But, as on the evening before, there was nobody in sight. He went towards the garden where he had left his horse, tethered to a tree, Shaking his head in wonder at the strangeness of it all . Suddenly, a large rose bush caught his eye.(PAPC-att.circ)
Remembering his promise to Beauty, he bent down to pick a rose. (P1-time)
Instantly, out of the rose garden,a horrible beast sprang, wearing splendid clothes.(gerund-attribute-loose apposition)
He glared at the merchant and shouted at him,with his terrifying voice growling.(PAPC-att.circ) : "Ungrateful man! I gave you shelter, you ate at my table and slept in my own bed, but now all the thanks I get is the theft of my favorite flowers! I shall put you to death for this slight!"
The merchant fell on his knees before the Beast,with fear trembling (PAPC-att circi)
"Forgive me! Forgive me! Don't kill me! (Imperative mood) I'll do anything you say! The rose wasn't for me. That was for my daughter to be happy (F.I.C-complex attrib.)
I promised to bring her back a rose from my journey!" (Inf-object)
The Beast dropped the paw it had clamped on the unhappy merchant.
“If you bring me your daughter, I shall spare your life”-(real conditional mood)
If the terror-stricken merchant didn’t obey , he would be killed (conditional mood)
The mercant reaching home, his three daughters ran to greet him.(NAPC-time)
After telling his dreadful adventure, Beauty put his mind at rest immediately.(gerund-time)
"Dear father, I'd do anything for saving you .(gerund-purpose)
Its important that you keep your promise.(Subjanctive1)
Take me to the castle. I'll stay there in your place!" The merchant hugged his daughter,with his heart soothed.(PAPC-attend.circ.)
"I never did doubt your love for me. For the moment I can only thank you for saving my life." So Beauty was led to the castle.(gerund-cause)
Then the merchant came to that castle ,with Beauty following him.(PAPC-att.circ)
In the beginning, Beauty was frightened of the Beast, and shuddered at the sight of it.(P2-predicative)
In spite of having awful head, now she didn’t fear.(gerund-concession)
She had one of the finest rooms in the Castle. Then the beast started to say(inf-object) a few kind words, till in the end and Beauty liked conversing with him.(gerund –object)
The days passed, and Beauty and the Beast became good friends. Then one day, the Beast asked the girl to be his wife.(OIC-complex object)
But Beauty did not know what to say. Marry such an ugly monster? But she did not want to hurt the feelings of one who, after all, had been kind to her.(inf-object)
Then she said: "I really can't say yes," she began shakily.(inf-p.c.m.v.p)
The Beast interrupted her : "I quite understand! And I'm not offended by your refusal!". Life went on as usual, and nothing further was said. One day, the Beast presented Beauty a magnificent magic mirror. When Beauty peeped into it, she could see her family, far away.(inf-p.c.m.v.p)
Beauty stared for hours at her distant family. Then she began to feel worried.(inf-p.c.n.aspective)
One day, the Beast found her weeping beside the magic mirror.(gerundial construction-complex object)
"What's wrong?" he asked,with his attention focused on.(PAPC-att.circ)
"My father is gravely ill and in the deathbed! And I wish I could see him again(Past subjunctive)
But the Beast only shook its head : "No! You will never leave this castle!" A little later, he returned and spoke solemnly to the girl :
"If you swear that you will return here in seven days time, I'll let you go and visit your father!" (real conditional mood)
"I swear! I swear I will! How kind you are! “ Beauty said. In reality, the merchant had fallen ill from a broken (P2-attribute) heart at knowing (gerund –circumst.)his daughter was being kept prisoner.
When he embraced her again, he was soon on the road to recover.(inf-attribute)
Beauty stayed beside him for hours on end, describing her life at the Castle, and explaining that the Beast was really good and kind (P1-attendant circ.)
The days flashed past, and at last the merchant recovered. He was completely well again. Beauty was happy at last.Then she noticed seven days had gone.
Then one night she woke from a terrible nightmare. She had dreamt that the Beast was dying and calling(P1-part of c.n.v.predicate) for her, twisting in agony.(P1-manner)
“Come back! Come back to me!" he was pleading(P1-part of c.n.v.p). The solemn promise she had made,so she arranged her to leave home immediately.(OPC-complex object)
So she arrived at the castle. She rushed up the stairs, calling, but there was no reply.(P1-manner)
Her heart in her mouth.(NAC-attendant circ.) , Beauty ran into the garden and the Beast crouched there, its eyes shut.(NAC-attendant circ.), as if being dead.(gerund-comparison)
Beauty threw herself at him and hugged him tightly. "Don't die! Don't die!(imperative mood) I would marry you, if you lived”(unreal-conditional)
The Beast's ugly snout turned magically into the face of a handsome young man.
"How I've been longing(P1-Part of c.n.v.p) for this moment!" he said. "I was suffering P1-Part of c.n.v.p) in silence, and couldn't tell my frightful secret (infinitive-part of c.m.v.p)
An evil witch turned me into a monster and only the love would save me from this situation. My dearest! I'll be so happy if you'll marry me."(real-conditional mood)
The wedding took place shortly after and, from that day on, the young Prince would have nothing but roses in his gardens . And that's why, to this day, the castle is known as the Castle of the Rose.
